KARNATAKA Kudla Express finally flagged ofF
The Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Junction-Yeshwantpur Tri-Weekly Kudla Express (16575/16576) was finally flagged off in Mangaluru on Sunday.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged it off via videoconference from Panaji. The programme in Mangaluru was attended by Union Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda.
Introduction of the train comes after persistent struggle, including filing of a PIL writ petition before the High Court of

Karnataka by Udupi Rail Yatri Sangha president R.L. Dias. South Western Railway had undertaken before the court to run the train by March 31.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sadananda Gowda said that he had to boycott the Bengaluru-Hassan new line opening ceremony last month in Mangaluru as the Kudla Express was not introduced the same day. He had told Mr. Prabhu that he would not attend any Railway function till the Kudla Express was introduced.
Responding to MLC Ivan D’Souza’s grouse about Mangaluru Central not being made a world-class station, Mr. Sadananda Gowda said that the world-class concept is not followed at present. Instead, Mangaluru has been chosen in the first batch of 400 A1 and A category stations to be upgraded by Railways, he said.
Mr. Prabhu also inaugurated electrification of the rail line between Mangaluru and Chervathur, doubling of line between Jokatte and Panambur, and railway goods siding at Thokur.
Mr. Prabhu also witnessed signing of a loan pact between Konkan Railway and a consortium of lenders comprising State Bank of India and Exim Bank for a loan of Rs. 1,2000 crore.
KRCL will take electrification of its 748 km route network at a cost of Rs. 1,510 crore. While the Centre will provide Rs. 310 crore, the balance will be met through the loan.

1510 crores for 748 Kms. Isn't it 1 cr per Km? Even considering the problems of KR route, isn't the amount high?

Amount appears to be a bit on higher side, may be due to hilly terrain of KR.

Residents of the coast are disappointed with its departure time from Mangaluru Junction.
Leaving Mangaluru Junction at 11.30 a.m. and reaching Yeshwantpur at 8.30 p.m. will not help Mangaloreans, said G. Hanumanth Kamath, president of West Coast Rail Yatri Abhivriddhi Sangha.
It should have ideally started before 7 a.m. and reached Bengaluru at 4 p.m., he said.

Seven stations, including Bengaluru, Mysuru and Mangaluru, have the facility
Very soon, 12 more railway stations in the State would get high-speed free Wi-Fi facility for passengers. Seven major stations in the State have the facility now.
RailTel, a public sector undertaking of the Railway Ministry, is executing the project announced in the 2016–17 Railway Budget. The Railway Board had entrusted RailTel

with the task of installation of Wi-Fi facility at 400 stations across the country in collaboration with Google, under the Digital India initiative of the Union government.
Presently, free Wi-Fi is available at KRS Bengaluru City, Yeshwantpur, Mysuru, Hubballi, Mangaluru Central, and Kalaburagi stations through RailTel. Belagavi station has got the facility under the MPLAD scheme. With each access point covering up to 40 metres, all platforms, passenger concourse and entrance of the stations are covered, according to South Western Railway’s chief public relations officer E. Vijaya.
In 2017–18, the Railways would provide the facility at Vijayapura, Ballari, Dharwad, Hosapete, and Vasco da Gama (Goa) stations in Hubballi division; Bengaluru Cantonment (to be commissioned shortly), Bangarpet, Kengeri, Krishnarajapuram, and Sri Satya Sai Prasanti Nilayam stations in Bengaluru division; Davangere and Shivamogga Town in Mysuru division, and Mangaluru Junction station in Palakkad division of Southern Railway.
Seventeen more stations would be covered in the next financial year. They are Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Londa, and Toranagallu in Hubballi division; Banaswadi, Hindupur, Hosur, Mandya, Tumakuru, and Yelahanka in Bengaluru division, and Arsikere, Birur, Bhadravathi, Harihar, Haveri and Hassan in Mysuru division.
One can get Internet access with speeds up to 1 Mbps for upload and 3 Mbps for download for the first 30 minutes. Subsequently, the speed reduces to 64 Kbps, but, one could access railway-related sites through WiFi for information such as PNR, and train inquiry, throughout the day.

Scripting a major milestone in the annals of the over-a-century-old rail line between the 307-km-long Mangalore and Shoranur junction, the Southern Railway has virtually given the green signal to run electric locomotives on the remaining 84-km-long stretch between Charvathur and Mangalore Central stations.
The Railways in all probability would operate the electric locomotive by March-end, up to Mangaluru. A team of senior Railway officials led by Bengaluru-based Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Southern Circle, K.A. Manoharan carried out a detailed inspection of the newly electrified railway section on Saturday.
The team left Mangaluru

Central station at 10 a.m in the special inspection car and inspected the level-crossing gates, curves, tunnel and bridges located within the section. The team reached Charvattur at 3.30 p.m. The team members also examined Kasaragod railway station, Bekal Fort sectioning post and commissioned the new electric feeder sub-station at Charvattur.
In the return direction, the team conducted a speed trial run at the stipulated 110 kmph leaving Charvattur at 5.48 p.m. to arrive at Mangaluru Central at 6.52 p.m., Railway sources told The Hindu here on Sunday.
The CRS, in all probability, would give the certification to run the electric locos in a couple of days, sources said.
Having commissioned the electric feeder sub-stations at Elathur, near Kozhikode, and the latest at the Charvathur station, the Railways would be in a position to haul up to 75 per cent of the passenger and freight traffic, a senior Railway official said.
The CRS was accompanied by S. Ramasubbu, Chief Electrical Distribution Engineer, Southern Railway; G.P. Garg, Deputy Commissioner of Railway Safety (Electrical); and Srinivasan, Deputy Commissioner of Railway Safety (Signal).
K. Nagendra Prasad, Chief Project Director, and V. K. Manoharan, Deputy Chief Engineer-Rail Electrification-Kannur of the Railway Electrification wing, were present.

A goods wagon derailed at Sirivagilu near Edakumari in Sakaleshpur taluk on Wednesday, forcing the South Western Railways to stop Yeshwanthpur-Karwar Express (16515) train at Hassan Railway Station. The passengers, who had planned their trips Mangaluru, Karwar and Subramanya, had a difficult time.
The goods train heading to Bengaluru from Mangaluru derailed around 11.15 a.m. According to senior officials of the South Western Railway, one wagon derailed near Sirivagilu, amidst the Western Ghats. Yashwanthpur-Karwar Express was stopped at Hassan station around 11.45 a.m. The passengers were told either seek refund of their ticket or wait until the track was restored.
While many took the refund and looked for buses to reach their destination, a few stayed in the railway station. Ravi Kumar, a Tumakuru resident, was accompanying his family to Subramanya. “Fifteen members of our family had planned the trip by train to enjoy the greenery in the Western Ghats. It is now difficult to make alternative arrangements to reach our destination,” he said.
Similar was the situation of Ramesh, a resident of Bengaluru. He was travelling with his family members to attend a wedding in Dharmasthala. He said that the SWR should compensate the loss caused to the passengers. “They return the ticket amount (partially)... but that will not compensate the hardship caused to the passengers," he said.
