The Northeast Frontier Railway, which has been operating three passenger trains along Rangiya-Murkongselek BG rail route, has introduced a pair of additional passenger trains along the route.
The first special train, No. 05909 (Up)/05910(Down), which was launched to ply between Dibrugarh and Murkongselek station via Lumding, Guwahati and Rangiya arrived at Murkongselek station here on Saturday morning and left the station on the same day. Likewise, another passenger train bearing number 05617 (up)/05618 (Down) which came from Guwahati arrived at Murkongselek station on Saturday midnight, and left the station on Sunday morning.
number of passenger trains operating in the Rangiya-Murkongselek route has become five after introduction of the two special trains as there were three passenger trains including 15613(Up)/15614 (Dn) Kamakhya-Murkongselek (Intercity) Express, Murkongselek-Dekargaon passenger train and another special passenger train were already plying on the route on a daily basis.
NF railway sources said that the two special trains introduced in the route are on a fortnight-long trial run, but it might be made regular on public demand.
The people of North Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have hailed the NFR’s move and hoped that it will meet the passengers’ need for safe and long travel by railway.
Murkongselek (Jonai) bordering East Siang of Arunachal is the last railway station in North Assam. The BG railway track is proposed to extend to upper Arunachal districts linking Upper Assam area through the rail route.

UDALGURI, June 29 - “The Railway Ministry should seriously think of plying more trains on the new BG route from Murkongselek to New Delhi. There is logical ground to reschedule the existing timetable of the Dekargao-Rangiya Junction Down passenger train in the collective interest of the travelling public.”
The above was voiced by a group of senior citizens here recently while talking to this correspondent. “We have decided to form a railway passengers’ committee in order to place our demand before the concerned authority to this effect”, they added.
The senior citizens also
said that passengers along the Murkongselek-Udalguri-Tangla route feel that the Railway Ministry should think about the needs of the poor people and introduce a superfast train from Murkongselek to New Delhi with stoppages at Lakhimpur, Gohpur, Rangapara Junction, Udalguri, Tangla, Rangiya, New Bongaigaon Junction, Kokrajhar, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, New Jalpaiguri, Katihar, Khagaria, Mansi, Begusarai, Barauni via Hajipur, Chapra, Sewan, Dewaria, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Allahabad and New Delhi, which would benefit thousands of New Delhi and Bihar, UP-bound people, particularly the large number of students studying outside the State from this region and employees.
They also suggested to the NF Railway authority to undertake a test-run of the superfast train to see the heavy rush of passengers in this route which would encourage the NF Railway authority to authorise regular running of this train at least three days a week. “We hope the NF Railway authority would take our demand seriously and with utmost sincerity,” they observed.
On the other hand, the senior citizens were of the view that there is no meaning of running a passenger train from Dekargaon in the evening as it is seen that there are two more express trains which can accommodate the passengers from Rangapara to Rangiya Junction during the night.
Rather, they reasoned that the Railways should run the Down Dekargaon-Rangiya passenger train in the daytime with departure at 2.00 pm from Dekargaon in order to facilitate the large number of students and Government employees, besides the day-to-day commuters of the region, to reach Rangiya Junction by 5 pm, so that they get sufficient time to board other express trains in order to travel outside the State. They also felt that the Down passenger train departing from Dekargaon for Rangiya Junction too should be extended upto the New Bongaigaon Junction for the benefit of the passengers on the route.
It may perhaps be pertinent to mention here that members of the Divisional Railway Users’ Consultative Committee (DRUCC) discussed in detail about such problems in the first DRUCC meeting held on October 29, 2015 at the DRM conference hall in Rangiya Junction and subsequently submitted a memorandum to the DRM of Rangiya Division, where the Railway authority too assured to sympathetically look into the problems and solve them accordingly.

JONAI, May 27 - Several hundred youths, including members of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parishad of Jonai and school -going students staged dharna at Murkongselek (Jonai) Railway Station on Friday.
Though the protesters had plans to detain the Murkongselek-Guwahati Intercity Express at the station, it was not attempted after the Area Manager of NF Railway assured to pursue their demands. The collective protest was against the railway authority’s alleged negligence towards the long-standing demand of placing an additional train on the Rangiya-Murkongselek route.
The protesters subsequently submitted a memorandum to the General Manager of
NF Railway through the Area Manager, who was camping at Murkongselek Railway Station (Jonai) for today.
The protesters’ demands include operation of an additional passenger train from Murkongselek Railway Station in the morning for the convenience of officer-goers in North Assam region, introduction of a speedy train between Murkongselek Railway Station and New Delhi and enhancement of reservation seat capacity in the existing Murkongselek-Guwahati Intercity Express with 50 percent seat reservation for Murkongselek Railway Station near Ruksin.
It may be mentioned that the Murkongselek Railway Station Development Committee and other local organisations have since long been demanding an additional train on this route.
Presently, two trains, namely Murkongselek-Guwahati Express and Murkongselek-Dekargaon Passenger, besides a few goods trains run on this route.
The BG rail route links the Siang belt of Arunachal Pradesh with other parts of the country and the people of North Assam. Four districts of Siang in Arunachal Pradesh have also benefited.

BISWANATH CHARIALI, May 10 - The people of the north bank of Assam have demanded more trains along the Morkongselek-Rangiya railway line, especially during the day time.
At present, only three trains are run by the NF Railway along the said line. It may be mentioned here that the NF Railway had stopped plying of trains along this track in the name of gauge conversion around five years back, which threw the people of this economically backward area into much trouble. On the other hand, the neighbouring State Arunachal is very vulnerable from the defence point view, too, and communication to the State by road is not satisfactory yet. Frequent road blocks due to flood and some other reasons cause much inconvenience
to the people of the State. Therefore, introduction of more trains to distant places like Guwahati, upper Assam, New Delhi, South India etc., has been sought along this track by the people of this economically-backward region as soon as possible.
Significantly, the north bank is represented by three BJP Lok Sabha MPs namely Sarbananda Sonowal, Ram Prasad Sharma and Ramen Deka and two newly-elected Rajya Sabha MPs from Congress namely Ripun Borah and Rani Narah, but people allege that they have failed to persuade the ruling BJP Government at the Centre in this regard.

JONAI, May 3 - An early morning explosion which occurred in a private residence at No. 2 Murkongselek village near the railway station here, rocked the area. The explosion punched numerous holes in the CGI sheets overhead, besides damaging an RCC structure of a nearby bathroom. The heat generated by the blast also burnt a granary.
The explosion took place in a granary on the back side of one Dina Nath Upadhyai’s home near Murkongselek Railway Station. The early morning explosion obviously created panic among the local residents. However, there were no casualties.
owner of the home, stated before the police that he heard a mild vibration at around 3.00 am, which was subsequently followed the blast. While he does not suspect anyone behind the incident, however, the reason or material used in the explosion still remains shrouded in mystery.
“I initially thought it was the sound of thunder, but later discovered fire in the granary following the blast. I immediately called the police, who arrived some moments later,” Upadhyai stated.
It may be pertinent to add here that Upadhyai is an adviser of the Jonai Sub-Divisional Committee of Village Defence Party(VDP) and maintains close links with the police administration in the district.
Meanwhile, senior police officers along with bomb experts visited the spot and interrogated the family members. They collected some samples from the spot for laboratory testing. However, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer and other senior officials were reluctant to disclose about their findings, but clarified that it was not an incident of bomb blast.
The explosion has created confusion among the local people, who suspect the hand of some insurgent group behind the incident.
