The Northeast Frontier Railway, which has been operating three passenger trains along Rangiya-Murkongselek BG rail route, has introduced a pair of additional passenger trains along the route.
The first special train, No. 05909 (Up)/05910(Down), which was launched to ply between Dibrugarh and Murkongselek station via Lumding, Guwahati and Rangiya arrived at Murkongselek station here on Saturday morning and left the station on the same day. Likewise, another passenger train bearing number 05617 (up)/05618 (Down) which came from Guwahati arrived at Murkongselek station on Saturday midnight, and left the station on Sunday morning.

number of passenger trains operating in the Rangiya-Murkongselek route has become five after introduction of the two special trains as there were three passenger trains including 15613(Up)/15614 (Dn) Kamakhya-Murkongselek (Intercity) Express, Murkongselek-Dekargaon passenger train and another special passenger train were already plying on the route on a daily basis.
NF railway sources said that the two special trains introduced in the route are on a fortnight-long trial run, but it might be made regular on public demand.
The people of North Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have hailed the NFR’s move and hoped that it will meet the passengers’ need for safe and long travel by railway.
Murkongselek (Jonai) bordering East Siang of Arunachal is the last railway station in North Assam. The BG railway track is proposed to extend to upper Arunachal districts linking Upper Assam area through the rail route.

UDALGURI, June 29 - “The Railway Ministry should seriously think of plying more trains on the new BG route from Murkongselek to New Delhi. There is logical ground to reschedule the existing timetable of the Dekargao-Rangiya Junction Down passenger train in the collective interest of the travelling public.”
The above was voiced by a group of senior citizens here recently while talking to this correspondent. “We have decided to form a railway passengers’ committee in order to place our demand before the concerned authority to this effect”, they added.
The senior citizens also
...

said that passengers along the Murkongselek-Udalguri-Tangla route feel that the Railway Ministry should think about the needs of the poor people and introduce a superfast train from Murkongselek to New Delhi with stoppages at Lakhimpur, Gohpur, Rangapara Junction, Udalguri, Tangla, Rangiya, New Bongaigaon Junction, Kokrajhar, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, New Jalpaiguri, Katihar, Khagaria, Mansi, Begusarai, Barauni via Hajipur, Chapra, Sewan, Dewaria, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Allahabad and New Delhi, which would benefit thousands of New Delhi and Bihar, UP-bound people, particularly the large number of students studying outside the State from this region and employees.
They also suggested to the NF Railway authority to undertake a test-run of the superfast train to see the heavy rush of passengers in this route which would encourage the NF Railway authority to authorise regular running of this train at least three days a week. “We hope the NF Railway authority would take our demand seriously and with utmost sincerity,” they observed.
On the other hand, the senior citizens were of the view that there is no meaning of running a passenger train from Dekargaon in the evening as it is seen that there are two more express trains which can accommodate the passengers from Rangapara to Rangiya Junction during the night.
Rather, they reasoned that the Railways should run the Down Dekargaon-Rangiya passenger train in the daytime with departure at 2.00 pm from Dekargaon in order to facilitate the large number of students and Government employees, besides the day-to-day commuters of the region, to reach Rangiya Junction by 5 pm, so that they get sufficient time to board other express trains in order to travel outside the State. They also felt that the Down passenger train departing from Dekargaon for Rangiya Junction too should be extended upto the New Bongaigaon Junction for the benefit of the passengers on the route.
It may perhaps be pertinent to mention here that members of the Divisional Railway Users’ Consultative Committee (DRUCC) discussed in detail about such problems in the first DRUCC meeting held on October 29, 2015 at the DRM conference hall in Rangiya Junction and subsequently submitted a memorandum to the DRM of Rangiya Division, where the Railway authority too assured to sympathetically look into the problems and solve them accordingly.

JONAI, May 27 - Several hundred youths, including members of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parishad of Jonai and school -going students staged dharna at Murkongselek (Jonai) Railway Station on Friday.
Though the protesters had plans to detain the Murkongselek-Guwahati Intercity Express at the station, it was not attempted after the Area Manager of NF Railway assured to pursue their demands. The collective protest was against the railway authority’s alleged negligence towards the long-standing demand of placing an additional train on the Rangiya-Murkongselek route.
The protesters subsequently submitted a memorandum to the General Manager of

NF Railway through the Area Manager, who was camping at Murkongselek Railway Station (Jonai) for today.
The protesters’ demands include operation of an additional passenger train from Murkongselek Railway Station in the morning for the convenience of officer-goers in North Assam region, introduction of a speedy train between Murkongselek Railway Station and New Delhi and enhancement of reservation seat capacity in the existing Murkongselek-Guwahati Intercity Express with 50 percent seat reservation for Murkongselek Railway Station near Ruksin.
It may be mentioned that the Murkongselek Railway Station Development Committee and other local organisations have since long been demanding an additional train on this route.
Presently, two trains, namely Murkongselek-Guwahati Express and Murkongselek-Dekargaon Passenger, besides a few goods trains run on this route.
The BG rail route links the Siang belt of Arunachal Pradesh with other parts of the country and the people of North Assam. Four districts of Siang in Arunachal Pradesh have also benefited.

BISWANATH CHARIALI, May 10 - The people of the north bank of Assam have demanded more trains along the Morkongselek-Rangiya railway line, especially during the day time.
At present, only three trains are run by the NF Railway along the said line. It may be mentioned here that the NF Railway had stopped plying of trains along this track in the name of gauge conversion around five years back, which threw the people of this economically backward area into much trouble. On the other hand, the neighbouring State Arunachal is very vulnerable from the defence point view, too, and communication to the State by road is not satisfactory yet. Frequent road blocks due to flood and some other reasons cause much inconvenience

to the people of the State. Therefore, introduction of more trains to distant places like Guwahati, upper Assam, New Delhi, South India etc., has been sought along this track by the people of this economically-backward region as soon as possible.
Significantly, the north bank is represented by three BJP Lok Sabha MPs namely Sarbananda Sonowal, Ram Prasad Sharma and Ramen Deka and two newly-elected Rajya Sabha MPs from Congress namely Ripun Borah and Rani Narah, but people allege that they have failed to persuade the ruling BJP Government at the Centre in this regard.

JONAI, May 3 - An early morning explosion which occurred in a private residence at No. 2 Murkongselek village near the railway station here, rocked the area. The explosion punched numerous holes in the CGI sheets overhead, besides damaging an RCC structure of a nearby bathroom. The heat generated by the blast also burnt a granary.
The explosion took place in a granary on the back side of one Dina Nath Upadhyai’s home near Murkongselek Railway Station. The early morning explosion obviously created panic among the local residents. However, there were no casualties.
Upadhyai,

owner of the home, stated before the police that he heard a mild vibration at around 3.00 am, which was subsequently followed the blast. While he does not suspect anyone behind the incident, however, the reason or material used in the explosion still remains shrouded in mystery.
“I initially thought it was the sound of thunder, but later discovered fire in the granary following the blast. I immediately called the police, who arrived some moments later,” Upadhyai stated.
It may be pertinent to add here that Upadhyai is an adviser of the Jonai Sub-Divisional Committee of Village Defence Party(VDP) and maintains close links with the police administration in the district.
Meanwhile, senior police officers along with bomb experts visited the spot and interrogated the family members. They collected some samples from the spot for laboratory testing. However, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer and other senior officials were reluctant to disclose about their findings, but clarified that it was not an incident of bomb blast.
The explosion has created confusion among the local people, who suspect the hand of some insurgent group behind the incident.

GUWAHATI, Sept 5 - The Assam State Committee of the CPI-M has expressed its deep anguish over the change of terminal, revision of timings and composition of the recently introduced 15613/15614 Guwahati- Murkongselek Intercity Express.
The revision has once again, displayed the utter insensitivity and apathetic attitude of the authorities of the Northeast Frontier Railway towards the needs of the people of upper Assam districts on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra, said the party in a statement here.
After an abnormal delay in completion of the gauge conversion project from Rangiya to

Murkongselek, the Guwahati-Murkongselek Intercity Express was launched from August 10 last. But the timings of the newly introduced train were quite unrealistic and inconvenient for the train passengers, especially for the long-distance commuters.
In the face of growing public opinion and mounting protests, the NF Railway authorities decided to review and revise the time schedule, which would be effective from October 1, 2015.
But to the utter dismay of the people of the backward region, the railway authorities revised the timings quite mechanically and arbitrarily. Surprisingly, it also changed the terminal from Guwahati to Kamakhya without any rhyme or reason. In fact, daily two trains from each terminal – night and day services – are required between Guwahati and Murkongselek to cater to the growing needs of the passengers, the statement said.
The revised time schedule which will be effective from October 1, will in no way mitigate the problems and sufferings of the train commuters. The Assam State Committee of the CPI-M has demanded of the NF Railway authorities to review the decision and revise the new timetable for the 15613/15614 Guwahati-Murkongselek Intercity Express.

JONAI, Aug 10 - The railway connectivity got a boost in the region bordering Arunachal Pradesh on Monday with the launch of two maiden broad gauge (BG) passenger trains to Murkongselek, the easternmost railway station on the north bank of the Brahmaputra river.
The people of Murkongselek (Jonai), Silapathar and Dhemaji, besides the people of the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh are delighted as the train services to Murkongselek has resumed after a gap of four years, but on a broadened track, with the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) introducing the Guwahati-Murkongselek Intercity Express and the Murkongselek-Dekargaon Passenger trains on the recently converted Rangiya-Murkongselek BG route.

Minister of Railway Suresh Prabhu today flagged off the 15613/15614 Guwahati-Murgongselek Intercity Express through remote from New Delhi at 1:30 pm. He also flagged off the 55719/55720 Dekargaon-Bhalukpong Passenger train at the same time.
Lakhimpur MP and Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs, Sarbananda Sonowal, who attended a gorgeous function at the Murkongselek station, later inaugurated the operation of the 55813/55814 Murkongselek-Dekargaon Passenger train, which left the station at around 2 pm.
The Murkongselek railway station wore a festive look today as thousands of people from nearby areas gathered there to celebrate the resumption of the train service. NFR General Manager RS Virdi along with other senior railway officials along with Tezpur MP Ram Prasad Sharma and Pasighat East MLA Kaling Moyong also attended the function.
Sonowal, in his address, said that operation of the BG railway linking Guwahati and other capitals was a long pending public demand, which was fulfilled today. He said the Central government was planning to introduce more trains along the route linking the region with the national capital.
Referring to complaints of public inconvenience with the timing of rail movement, Sonowal said he has taken up the issue with the Union Railway Minister, requesting him to redress the grievances. “I will hold talks with the NFR higher-up for changing the train timings as sought by the people,” he said.
The last phase of the gauge conversion work along the 155-km stretch between North Lakhimpur and Murkongselek was completed early this year. Later, top railway officials in May this year conducted the high-speed trial run on the route.

NEW DELHI, Aug 10 - In a fresh initiative to augment the railway network in the North-east, projects worth Rs 37,000 crore have been taken up, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said here today.
To augment the railway network in the north-eastern states, 13 new lines, three gauge conversion and four doubling projects with a balance fund requirement of Rs 37,000 crore have been taken up. These projects, on completion, will augment the network by 1,915 km, he said.
The Railway Minister was flagging off new passenger train services following conversion of the North

Lakhimpur–Murkongselek and Balipara–Bhalukpong sections into broad gauge. The programme was held through simultaneous video conferencing between Rail Bhavan and Murkongselek and Bhalukpong.
At the Rail Bhavan, Minister of State Manoj Sinha, Rajya Sabha MP Bhubaneswar Kalita, Chairman Railway Board AK Mital, Member Engineering Railway Board VK Gupta and other Railway Board members were among those present.
At Murkongselek Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Sarbananda Sonowal was present, while at Bhalukpong Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju was present.
Minister Prabhu flagged off the 15613/15614 Guwahati-Murkongselek Intercity Express (daily) and 55719/55720 Dekargaon-Bhalukpong Passenger (in newly gauge-converted Balipara-Bhalukpong section).
Extension of 55429/55430 Rangiya-Rangapara North Passenger up to Dekargaon with new numbers 55721/55722, extension of 55613/55614 Dekargaon-Harmuti Passenger up to Murkongselek with new numbers 55813/55814, besides increase in frequency of 15903/15904 Dibrugarh-Chandigarh Express from weekly to bi-weekly, which was announced in the Railway Budget 2012-13, were also inaugurated.
Speaking on the occasion, the Railway Minister said that it was a “golden day” in the history of Arunachal Pradesh, as it was getting its second broad gauge connectivity with the commissioning of the Balipara–Bhalukpong gauge conversion. Earlier this year, Itanagar was provided connectivity with the national capital through a direct train.
Prabhu further said that along with this, commissioning of the newly converted North Lakhimpur–Murkongselek section marked the completion of the Rangiya–Murkongselek gauge conversion project running all along the north bank of the Brahmaputra. This would start a new era of development for the people of the region. This would also serve the defence needs of the country, he said.
“This 510-km gauge conversion project costing about Rs 3,600 crore was sanctioned in 2002-03. The project suffered delay mainly due to fund constraints in the past. But in 2014-15, an outlay of Rs 713 crore was provided for this line and the balance Rs 300 crore has been provided in 2015-16. The results are visible as we are today opening the entire project,” the Railway Minister said.
He claimed that rail connectivity to the north-eastern states had been made a mission item by the new government, “as we provided an all-time high budget allotment of Rs 5,200 crore for the projects in this region in 2014-15, which is over 50 per cent more than 2013-14. This tempo has been maintained in 2015-16 also by providing Rs 5,300 crore.”
The Railway Minister also informed that work on the Bogibeel bridge over the Brahmaputra was also progressing well and its completion in June, 2017 would change the landscape of the area.

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Aug 3 - The introduction of the much-awaited 15613/15614 Guwahati-Murkongselek-Guwahati intercity passenger train from ninth of this month has been hailed by various public organisations as a fulfilment of a long standing demand of the people of this border region of the State for better connectivity with the rest of the country.
However, the time of arrival and departure of the inter-city train from the North Lakhimpur railway station is a matter of concern. It has been learnt that the train will arrive North Lakhimpur at 2:30 am which will cause a lot of trouble for the public using this mode of transportation. This has been stated by the Lakhimpur Chambers of Commerce in a press release.

traders body has already sent a request letter to the Northeast Frontier Railway asking them to make minor changes on the schedule of the train for its up and down services. They requested the railway authorities to arrange the departure of the upward inter-city train from Guwahati at 10 pm so that it reaches North Lakhimpur at a convenient time in the morning. Similarly, they also sought a departure time of 5 pm in its downward journey from Murkongselek so that it stops at North Lakhimpur railway station at a convenient time in the evening.
Otherwise, the traders body said, this railway service would be meaningless and of no use for a large number of public in the Lakhimpur district. The Lakhimpur Chambers of Commerce also stated that massive public protests would be organised in North Lakhimpur that will also include programmes like ‘rail-roko’ if the demand is not met by the NF Railway.
Similar requests have also been made by the KB Road Nagarik Samaj, a civic organisation of North Lakhimpur.
