माथेरान : चार दशकांपूर्वी १५ दिवस महिनाभर येथे मुक्कामाला असायचो, पण आता इथले आमचे मुख्य आकर्षण असणारी मिनी ट्रेनच बंद असल्याने आम्ही आमच्या नातवंडांचे बालहट्टसुद्धा पुरवू शकत नाही, अशी प्रतिक्रिया वृद्ध पर्यटक मंडळींनी व्यक्त केली असून, माथेरानची ओळख असलेली ही मिनी ट्रेन पुन्हा सुरू करण्याची मागणी या पर्यटकांनी के ली आहे. सध्या शाळेला उन्हाळी सुटी असून, मुला-नातवंडांसह पर्यटक माथेरान येथे येत आहेत. त्यामुळे पर्यटनाचा हंगाम जोरात सुरू झाला आहे; मात्र ‘माथेरानची राणी’ म्हणून ओळखली जाणारी मिनी ट्रेन अद्याप सुरू करण्यात न आल्याने लहानग्यांसह मोठ्यांचाही हिरमोड होत आहे.

ही मिनी ट्रेन खऱ्या अर्थाने स्थानिकांसह पर्यटकांचे खास आकर्षण बनलेली आहे. पर्यटक या गाडीचा सहवास लाभावयासाठी येत असतात आणि यातूनच येथील सर्वच मोलमजुरांसह मोठमोठ्या हॉटेल्स व्यावसायिकांना उदरनिर्वाहाचे साधन प्राप्त होत आहे. या गाडीमुळेच माथेरानला जिवंतपणा लाभलेला आहे. परंतु ८ मे २०१६ रोजी बोगीचे ब्रेक फेल होऊन एकाच जागी दोनदा बोगी घसरली होती. त्यामुळे ही सेवाच बंद करण्याचा निणय रेल्वे प्रशासनाने घेतला. येथे येणारे पर्यटक हे येथील निसर्गाशी एकरूप होण्याच्या आस्थेने येत असतात. मात्र मिनी ट्रेन बंद झाल्याने पर्यटन व्यवसायावर याचा परिणाम दिसून येत आहे. तसेच भर उन्हातान्हात पैशांच्या कमी बजेटमुळे दस्तुरीपासूनच
३ किमीची गावापर्यंत पायपीट करीत येत आहेत. परंतु रेल्वे प्रशासनाला याचे सोयरसुतक नसल्याचे स्पष्ट दिसत आहे.

On April 15, the toy train marked its 110 years. Officials had planned to re-design the coaches with the use of new technology to ensure safety. Laying new tracks will be another important development before resuming services.

The suspension of the train, a major mode of transport in the region, affected the daily commute of residents. While 28 coaches of the train retrofitted with better technology are ready, work is on to modify tracks and build other safety measures.
“We are aiming to complete the basic requisites listed under safety for starting the toy train. In that, around 28 coaches have been retrofitted with airbrakes, track requirements have been completed and trials of the suitable running of the coaches on the track is done. We aim to resume the services of the rake between Aman Lodge-Matheran by May 31,” a senior CR official said.
On April 15, the toy train marked its 110 years. Officials had planned to re-design the coaches with the use of new technology to ensure safety. Laying new tracks will be another important development before resuming services.
Along with safety measures, officials are working towards implementation of suggestions given by the team of Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) on their past visits for its running. In January, the Ministry of Railways had approved a funding of almost Rs 12 crore for building safety precautions of the rake.
“New tracks will be laid to ensure the coaches are run smoothly… The funds are being utilised by each different department to fulfill the requisites. We expect a final nod of CRS on running the service by mid-May, after which the services could be resumed,” the official added.
Meanwhile, residents complained of inconvenience caused due to the absence of train for over a year. With the onset of summers, starting the service further becomes important as it is a peak tourist season, they said.
“We are hopeful to travel in the toy train as soon as possible. Its absence affected our earnings for a long time with a dip in number of tourists. Resuming its services even partially could bring more tourists to the area,” said Bhalu, who runs a horse business to aid commute between the two stations.
“In the phase I, we plan to start services between Aman Lodge and Matheran stations for commuters by May 31. For the same, tenders have been awarded and work is on. The later phase will complete the running of service in the other segment, Neral-Aman Lodge, which will take time as it includes building the retaining wall,” a senior CR official said.

toy train was non-operational since a year after two consecutive derailments. Although no fatalities or injuries were reported, the CR decided to shut the services down after a public outcry about the safety of the line. However, while the entire Neral to Matheran route was shut, officials informed that the Aman Lodge to Matheran section would be functional all over the year whereas the Neral to Aman Lodge section will not be functional during monsoon.
Matheran, one of Mumbaikars’ favourite tourist spots, was becoming increasingly expensive as rates for horse carts and carpooling were hiked up due to the toy train service being shut. Aditi Maindarkar (25), who works in advertising said, “We went to Matheran on the Holi weekend. I first got down at Neral via the local train and then I spent around Rs 1,000 to get to Dasturi Naka. Since I couldn't ride a horse, I took the cart from there for which had to pay Rs 700 as against Rs 400 for the horse ride.”
An official said, “As of now we have finished the mechanical work like getting the train fixed with air-brakes, which will mean that we no longer will depend on the manual breaking that was in place until now.” He further added, “We have also got the safety approval and we are going to bring out the tender for the anti-crash barriers by the end of this month, hence they will be well in place by monsoon.”

माथेरान- माथेरानची शान आणि आकर्षण असलेली नॅरोगेज मिनीट्रेन मागील दहा महिन्यांपासूनच अनिश्चित काळासाठी बंद असल्याने गाडी सुरू होईल की नाही, या विवंचनेत स्थानिक नागरिक सध्या दिसत आहेत. मात्र, पर्यटकांमध्ये गाडी लवकरच सुरू व्हावी, ही उत्सुकतादेखील पाहावयास मिळत आहे.

पडल्याने मिनीट्रेन मे महिन्याच्याअखेरपर्यंत तरी सुरू होईल की नाही, याच विवंचनेत स्थानिक आहेत. पर्यटन हंगाम समीप येत आहे. त्यामुळे या गाडीच्या आधारावर सर्वांची आर्थिक व्यवहारांची मदार आहे.
रेल्वे अधिकाऱ्यांच्या मते ही गाडी २० कोटी रु पये तोट्यात गेलेली आहे; परंतु सन २०१० ते २०१६ याच कालावधीत या गाडीच्या एकूण ३५८४ फेऱ्या तांत्रिकदृष्ट्या रद्द करण्यात आल्याचे समजते. एकावेळेस दीडशे प्रवासी वाहण्याची क्षमता असणाऱ्या या गाडीच्या जेमतेम चार ते पाच फेऱ्या होत असत. त्यामुळे हा तोटा रेल्वेच्याच अनागोंदीमुळे त्यांनाच सोसावा लागलेला आहे. गाडीची सेवा बंद करून नाहक भुर्दंड प्रवाशांच्या माथी का लादला जात आहे, अस संतप्त सवाल यानिमित्ताने उपस्थित होत आहे.
नेरळ -माथेरान या अवघड डोंगर माथ्यातून कडवे आव्हान स्वीकारून आदमजी पिरभॉय आणि अब्दुल हुसैन आदमजी पिरभॉय या पितापुत्रांनी सन १९०१ ते १९०७ या केवळ सात वर्षांत चौदा किलोमीटरचा रेल्वेमार्ग बनवून स्वखर्चाने त्याकाळी १६ लाख रु पये खर्चून रेल्वे प्रशासनाला ही गाडी पर्यटकांच्या सेवेसाठीच बहाल केली होती; परंतु रेल्वे प्रशासनाला या मार्गावर असणारे सूतभर कामसुद्धा जलदगतीने करता येत नाही. अपघात हे होतच असतात म्हणून काही रेल्वे सेवा बंद होत नाही, असे माथेरानकरांसह पर्यटकांचे म्हणणे आहे.गाडी लवकरच सुरू करून पर्यटकांना सेवा द्यावी, अशी मागणी होत आहे.
>देशात एकूण ११००० रेल्वेगाड्या नियमितपणे धावतात. यामध्ये सात हजार पॅसेंजर, तर ४००० मालगाड्या धावतात. यातून कोट्यवधी रु पये उत्पन्न मिळते, त्याप्रमाणेच मिनीट्रेनच्या माध्यमातूनही मिळते, मग ही सेवा बंद का? असा संतप्त प्रश्न स्थानिकांसह पर्यटकांकडून विचारण्यात येत आहे.

नेरळ : मध्य रेल्वेच्या नेरळ स्थानकात अनेक वर्षांपूर्वी सुरू करण्यात आलेल्या पादचारी पुलाचे काम रखडले असताना, रेल्वे प्रशासनाने याच नेरळ स्थानकात मागील चार महिन्यांपासून नव्याने पादचारी पुलाचे काम सुरू केले आहे. १८ फूट रुंदीचा हा नवीन पादचारी पूल करण्यात येणार असून या पुलाचे काम संथ गतीने सुरू आहे. हा पूल तयार झाल्याने, स्थानकातील जुना पूल त्यानंतर तोडला जाणार आहे; परंतु एक पादचारी पूल नेरळ स्थानकात अर्धवट अवस्थेत उभा असून त्याबाबत रेल्वे प्रशासन जाहीर भूमिका घेत नसल्याने प्रवाशांनी नाराजी व्यक्त केली आहे. त्यामुळे या अर्धवट पुलाचे कामही सुरू करण्यात यावे, अशी मागणी प्रवाशांकडून केली जात आहे.

आहेत. २००३मध्ये तत्कालीन रेल्वेमंत्री नितीश कुमार यांनी नेरळ स्थानकात पादचारी पूल बांधण्याचे जाहीर केले होते. त्यानंतर नेरळ स्थानकात मुंबई एन्डकडे पादचारी पुलाची उभारणी करण्यास सुरु वात झाली. मात्र, पुलाचे काम अर्धवट झाल्यानंतर काही काळ पुलाचे काम बंद पडले होते. त्यानंतर ठेकेदार आणि रेल्वे यांच्यात झालेला वाद हा न्यायालयात प्रलंबित असल्याने गेली अनेक वर्षे पादचारी पुलाचे काम बंद आहे. नेरळ रेल्वे प्रवासी संघटनेने सातत्याने मागणी केल्याने मध्य रेल्वे प्रशासनाने अखेर नेरळ स्थानकात नवीन पादचारी पूल मंजूर केला. मध्य रेल्वे व्यवस्थापकांच्या नेरळ भेटीच्या अनेक तारखा मागील चार महिने जाहीर होत होत्या. त्यामुळे नोव्हेंबर २०१६मध्ये पादचारी पुलाच्या प्रत्यक्ष कामाला
सुरु वात झाली.
आता पुलाचे नेरळ स्थानकातील पायाचे बांधकाम पूर्ण झाले असून पुलाचे बांधकाम पूर्ण करण्यासाठी मे २०१७ ही डेडलाइन देण्यात आली आहे. पुलावर गर्डर टाकण्यासाठी मध्य रेल्वे प्रशासनाला मेगा ब्लॉकदेखील घ्यावा लागणार आहे. मात्र, नवीन पादचारी पुलामुळे नेरळ रेल्वे स्थानकात प्रवाशांना दिलासा मिळणार आहे. सध्या नेरळ रेल्वे स्थानकात असलेला ९० वर्षांपूर्वीचा पादचारी पूल हा ९ फूट रु ंदीचा असून नवीन पुलाची रु ंदी ही १८ फूट म्हणजे ६ मीटर एवढी आहे. त्याचवेळी पुलावर चढताना प्रवाशांना अधिक जागा मिळणार असून हा पूल मे महिन्यात खुला झाल्यानंतर नेरळ स्थानकातील जुना पादचारी पूल तोडण्यात येणार आहे; परंतु मुंबई एन्डकडील अर्धवट अवस्थेतील पादचारी पूल कधी पूर्ण होणार? असा प्रश्न प्रवाशांना पडला असून अर्धवट अवस्थेत असलेला पादचारी पूल पूर्ण करावा, अशी मागणी होत आहे.

MUMBAI: The Central Railway (CR) on Sunday successfully conducted speed trial for trains to run at 120 kmph on a stretch between Karjat and Neral stations. Officials said this was to ensure that the tracks could withstand the running of high-speed trains in near future. Trains to Pune and south India ply along this corridor.
"The trial was successful and the tracks were found to be in good condition," a senior official said, adding that at present trains run at a maximum speed of 100-110 kmph on this section.

The team also conducted inspections of the bridges and tunnels on the Mumbai-Pune route. Recently, a gangman was crushed to death by a boulder while three more persons were injured at Monkey Hill railway station on Mumbai-Pune route. Sources said the railways has been sensitizing the gangmen and asking them to take precautionary measures to prevent mishaps.
Another senior official sa id, "The inspections were conducted randomly and all safety parameters were adhered to."
The team also laid special emphasis on track inspection along the route --Neral to Lonavla.Similar inspections were recently carried out along the entire suburban section following incidents of unscrupulous elements trying to sabotage train services by keeping rail piece or a rods on track.

A very good step. At least beginning has been made to speed up the Mum-Pune route with one of the straight section (just 13km long between Karjat and Neral stations) of curves & EMU ridden Mum/Kalyan-Pune section. The speed shall be 120kmph on the route against earlier 100/110. In fact all the straighter sections of the route should be made 130 kmph.

The present step is a nice beginning towards further reduction in journey time on Mumbai & Pune high traffic route in future. Vast portion of Mumbai-Pune traffic is presently on road due to shorter distance and comparable/ lesser timing & more convenience of pickup and drop points. If IR can reduce the Mum-Pune distance substantially, IR could attract the traffic from road.

(2) Speeding up from 100/110kmph to 120/130 kmph-steps initiated
(3) Straightening of the curves & flattening of gradients through construction of straighter, flatter and much shorter path bye pass line (fit for 160+ kmph train) across the ghat & other curvy sections.

मुंबई : माथेरानची राणी म्हणून ओळख असणारी मिनी ट्रेन सुरक्षेच्या कारणास्तव गेल्या सात महिन्यांपासून सायडिंगलाच आहे. सुरक्षेची पूर्तता केल्याशिवाय ही ट्रेन सुरू करणे शक्य नसल्याचे मध्य रेल्वेकडून आधीच स्पष्ट करण्यात आले होते. त्यानुसार रेल्वे मंत्रालयाने तातडीने ६.८ कोटींचा आर्थिक निधी मंजूर केला आहे.
माथेरानची मिनी ट्रेन दोन वेळा रुळावरून घसरल्याच्या घटनेनंतर मे २०१६ पासून ट्रेनची सेवा सुरक्षेच्या कारणास्तव पर्यटकांसाठी बंद करण्यात आली. ट्रेन सुरू करण्यासाठी मध्य रेल्वेकडून प्रयत्न केले जात असून विभागीय रेल्वे व्यवस्थापकांकडून नुकताच पाहणी दौरा केला होता. माथेरानच्या ज्या भागातून ही मिनी ट्रेन धावते त्या भागात दरी असल्याने एका बाजूला संरक्षक भिंत बांधणे गरजेचे असून ती बांधण्याची सूचनाच रेल्वेमंत्री सुरेश प्रभू यांनी यापूर्वीच केली होती. तर अन्य सुरक्षेची पूर्तताही करण्याच्या सूचना केल्या होत्या. मात्र निधीअभावी काम पुढे सरकत नसल्याने अखेर

NAVI MUMBAI: Central Railway (CR) has hinted at putting the Matheran toy train services back on track.
The CR administration has brought two engines with an air brake systems to Neral station and has commenced the track-repairing work on the Neral Matheran line. Earlier, another engine prototype had been brought to Neral. CR divisional railway manager Ravinder Goyal visited the hill station on Friday to take stock of the project.

The development comes eight months after the toy train services between Neral and Matheran were discontinued. "The CR administration points to brake failure as one of the reasons behind the two successive mishaps reported in May . In addition, old design of coaches is another reason. The CR had been ordered to switch over to the airbraking system on January 1, 2011. We demand action against the officials who failed to implement that order," said Right to Information activist Janardan Parte.
"I spoke to the divisional railway manager on Friday and demanded action against officials responsible for the train mishaps during his visit on Friday. The senior CR official has directed me send the papers to him," he added. A CR official said three new engines are now in the Neral loco shed. "One engine is already there in Neral. Two more engines arrived in Neral a few days ago," said CR official.

The toy train service to Matheran, which was suspended in May this year after two derailments, is expected to resume in March. Twenty six coaches and three engines that ply on the Neral-Matheran route have already been fitted with air brakes, and upgradation of tracks between Aman Lodge and Matheran is already underway. “We hope to finish the repair and maintenance work on the Aman Lodge-Matheran section by February end,” said a senior officer from the Central Railway.

The toy train remains a major mode of transport for Matheran locals and a popular tourist service. Residents complained that tourist footfall at the hill station has reduced by half after the service was stopped.
According to senior CR officials, the report includes a tender worth Rs 20 crore to build the retaining wall along important sections of the 20 kilometer route and additional requirement for tracks. Though the report was prepared a long time ago, its sanctioning has been withheld in the headquarters at Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus due to some internal issues.
“Due to a few unsought deliberations on the changes in requirements of the tender, the report remains to be sent to the Board,” said a senior CR official.
Twenty six coaches and three engines on this route have been fitted with air brakes while officials confirmed that work on the tracks is underway. What remains is upgradation of tracks, re-design of coaches and the wall.
“Till now, coaches to run sufficient services between Neral-Matheran route have been retrofitted with air brakes. The tender also includes buying more rails and coaches which can have air brake system on it. We are also facing problems with transporting rocks for tracks due to unavailability of any mode of transport,” said a senior CR official.
Sources confirmed that considering the need to connect Aman Lodge station and Matheran stations by train is much more urgent at present, services between the same can resume by March if the sanction of other required things is approved. One of the walls will primarily be built near the Aman Lodge junction, where the coaches had derailed, and adjacent to which is a steep valley.
“After financial commission is through, we will await the Commission of Railway Safety sanction for the train to begin. Services could first resume between Aman Lodge-Matheran belt by March if all clearances and approvals are through,” an official confirmed.
