The bi-weekly express Train Number 16229/16230 which leaves Mysuru for Varanasi on Tuesdays and Thursdays, has been provided with metallic Braille signages inside the coaches indicating the berth numbers, location of alarm pull chains, toilets and emergency windows. operation of emergency exit windows for the use of visually challenged in times of any exigency. The initiative was financed by Pratap Simha, Mysuru MP, from the MPLAD Fund. Mr. Simha inaugurated and inaugurated by him on Monday. Though the Puri-Delhi Purushottam Express was the first train in the country to have a Braille-embedded coach, the Mysuru-Varanasi Express is the first train in the country where all reserved coaches have been embedded with Braille signage, said Rajkumar Lal, Divisional Railway Manager, Mysuru division of the South Western Railways. “The plan is to extend the facility to all the reserved coaches of long-distance trains in a phase-wise manner,” he added. Braille signage has been introduced on one rake of the Mysuru-Varanasi Express and the facility will be provided for the second rake of the same train as well. The Chamundi Express and the Mysuru-Talguppa Express are other two trains that will be provided with Braille signages after this, said Mr.Lal. The Mysuru Division, which operates 118 trains, has plans for such signages for all long-distance and express trains. Ms. Netravati, a visually-impaired person, welcomed the initiative and said that it will help them identify the seats or berths without seeking help from others. “We will be more independent and at times people do not respond properly as they to tend to be in a hurry to locate their berths,” said Netravati. However, the coach numbers have conventional signage and the plan is to affix Braille signage for the coaches as well, said officials.

Due to track doubling work between Yeliyuru and Naganahalli, the following trains have been cancelled on November 27, 28 and 29. The last stretch of the track-doubling work between Mysuru and Bengaluru is almost over and the Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS) will conduct an inspection of the track between Yeliyuru and Naganahalli on November 13. The clearance after the CRS inspection is usually issued within days. The double-line stretch of 27 km between the two sections — Yeliyuru and Naganahalli — is set to become operational by November-end. Disclosing... more...
this to mediapersons here on Friday, Divisional Railway Manager Rajkumar Lal said that with this, the track-doubling work between the two cities is practically done, except for a 1.7-km stretch, which remains a single line until the completion of the bridges across the Cauvery and shifting of Tipu Sultan’s armoury. However, the doubling of the 137.3-km stretch (out of 139 km between Mysuru and Bengaluru) will be available to the public, and the commuting time between the two cities is likely to progressively reduce by 30 to 45 minutes. “A fast shuttle between the two cities can ideally cover the distance between Mysuru and Bengaluru in less than 2 hours,” said Mr. Lal. At present, most trains take up to three hours to cover the distance. But the existing speed of most trains may not increase immediately as there are more than 35 major curves on the stretch, of which at least eight have a curvature of more than 8 degrees. What the doubling project has done is to ease the traffic bottlenecks along different sections by creating a free path for trains to operate. “However, the number of trains that can be operated between the two cities also hinges on the availability of a berth at the Bengaluru station, which is choked because of high traffic,” Mr. Lal said. This may only ease when some of the trains originating from Bengaluru junction are shifted to Byappanahalli Station, or alternatively trains from Mysuru can run up to Kengeri. At present, 27 pairs of trains operate between Mysuru and Bengaluru, including the bi-weekly and tri-weekly long-distance trains. The track doubling will facilitate addition of at least 10 other services, he added. The original cost of the project escalated from Rs. 350 crore when proposed in 2007-08, to Rs. 874 crore now, of which Rs. 145.09 core has been earmarked for electrification-related works.
