The Railways has cancelled as many as 81 trains after 10 bogies of the Pune-bound Jhelum Express coming from Jammu derailed 50 metres short of a bridge over the Sutlej at Ladhuwal near Ludhiana in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The rail traffic on the line has been suspended and would be restored after seven to eight hours. Meanwhile, trains are being diverted via different routes.
Several passengers suffered minor injuries while three had to be hospitalised.

Railway Manager (DRM) Anuj Prakash and Additional DRM Ashutosh Pant rushed to the site. Meanwhile, the Phillaur SDM and administration, police and railway officials from Ludhiana and Jalandhar mounted a rescue operation.
The railway authorities ruled out any sabotage. Negligence on the part of railway authorities in maintenance of the track is the likely possibility. There appears to be a technical snag at the initial stage.
Bogies from S-1 to S-8, B-5 and the pantry car were damaged. Rail track length of around 20 metres was also found damaged, according to SDM Subhash Chander. He said the train had 24 bogies. Some of these were later sent to Ludhiana and the rest to Phillaur railway station. Several passengers were sent to Ludhiana by buses.
Many passengers who belonged to the Jalandhar area decided to cancel their journey and return home.
A major tragedy was averted due to the slow speed of the train as it had just moved out of Phillaur station after a halt.
Railway sources said a high-level inquiry had been ordered to indentify the cause of the derailment. Technical experts have also reached the site.

The Ferozepur Divisional Railway Manager has barred an NGO from providing drinking water at Phagwara railway station, claiming it was doing so without permission.
He also claimed water distributed as contaminated.
“There is shortage of water at the railway station but that does not mean anyone can start providing drinking water to people. If someone falls sick or faces any problem after drinking this water, who will be responsible for that?” Divisional Railway Manager Anuj Prakash said.
“We

have asked Janata Jal Committee, which is doing the water service, to come and meet us. They should discuss the matter and take the permission to continue the service,” he said.
Prakash claimed the water which is distributed is suspected to be contaminated, which is why he stopped the practice.
The committee has been distributing free drinking water to people at its own expense for the past 30 years at Phagwara railway station in Punjab.
Meanwhile, local BJP leader Rajat Mohindru has alleged the move by the railway official was aimed at benefiting the private companies that sell bottled drinking water.
“On one hand the railway station is facing water scarcity and, if an outfit is giving water to commuters, why does the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) has any problem with that, no one has complained about their water in the past 30 years,” Mohindru said.
“Such organisations should be encouraged so that people facing water shortage can avail it easily. I will also write a letter to the Rail Minister regarding this issue,” he said.
Refuting the BJP leader’s allegations, Prakash said the water is unhygienic and the organisation is neither registered, nor they have any permission.
“It is a completely illegal act and cannot be allowed,” he said. - PTI
