that school and college students and those working in Madurai needed more express trains to stop at Sholavandan for easy commuting, he said Nellai and Tuticorin-Mysore Express trains that passed through several commercially important stations were always over-crowded and the local people could hardly enter unreserved coaches.
“Our demand for stoppage of Pandian Express is not new. The train used to stop here for three decades till 2008. Similarly, when the metre gauge existed, the previously run Madurai-Tirupathi express and Coimbatore-Rameswaram Express used to stop at Sholavandan. We only want to restore the old services,” Mr.Rajendran said.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Govindapparaj held talks with the protestors and promised to convey their demands to the General Manager.
As an immediate step he promised to look into the pressing needs like proper lighting at the station, an approach road to the town and drinking water facility.
A large number of security personnel, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Tamil Nadu Railway Police) A.C. Vellaiyan and Assistant Security Commissioner (Railway Protection Force) G. Selvaraj, were deployed at the station. Later the arrested persons were released.
