Finally, the Endowments Department has initiated steps for the developmental activities in the historic Arasavalli temple by approving the master plan which was prepared a couple of years back.
The department, in association with the temple authorities, is expected to spend around Rs. 10 crore for the creation of facilities for the pilgrims.
The temple attracts almost three lakh people on the day of Ratha Saptami and around 20,000 devotees every Sunday to have darshan of Lord Suryanarayana Swamy.
It

gets an annual income of Rs. 4 crore and has more than Rs. 18 crore worth in fixed deposits. Though the finances of the temple looked bright, the Endowments Department failed to take up developmental activities all these years. The ills that plague the temple include congestion created by vendors or hawkers at the temple’s entrance and increased traffic movement through the temple’s vicinity into residential areas — both making it difficult for pilgrims visiting the temple, especially on Sundays. Utter chaos prevails on festival days such as on Ratha Saptami.
The district administration has proposed removing the shops on either side of the road leading up to the temple and widening the road up to 60 feet.
Recently, Endowments Department Principal Secretary J.S.V. Prasad visited Arasavalli temple and expressed dissatisfaction over the functioning of the temple. He asked officials to begin road widening, creation of parking area, shifting of shops to identified place as part of the implementation of the master plan.
The works are likely to begin by the end of this year, according to higher officials. Road widening from Arasavalli arch to the main premises will be taken up very shortly.
A massive building, which is located in front of the main temple, is expected to be demolished so that the Sun’s rays fall directly into the premises of temple.
The implementation of master plan helps to construct more toilets, cloak rooms and accommodation facility. Indra Pushkarani will also get a makeover and it can be seen directly from the temple. The temple has no ‘Mada Veedhi’ as houses and commercial establishments had been built around the Sun temple.
Chief Priest of the temple Ippili Shankara Sarma told The Hindu that the temple would get all the facilities on a par with major ones such as Simhachalam Temple near Vishakapatnam, the Kanaka Durga Temple at Vijayawada and the Annavaram Temple of East Godavari district.

Naresh, a government employee living in Anakapalle, and Achari, a teacher living in Vizianagaram, who commute to the city daily for work, find the lack of local trains a curse for commuters.
“Though there are trains from Anakapalle to Visakhapatnam, they do not match the actual demand. I have to board either 57271 BZA- Rayagada Passenger or 57255 Kakinada - Vizag EMU, which are already packed to capacity with hardly any space to get in,” says Naresh.
Mr. Achari travels from Vizianagaram to Visakhapatnam every day. He boards 78531 Vizianagaram-Visakhapatnam DEMU, which is

packed to capacity with hardly any space to stand comfortably leave alone sitting in the train.
Both Naresh and Achari feel that there should be MEMU s (Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit) between Tuni/Anakapalle to Vizianagaram via Visakhapatnam after every 1 hour and a few services can be extended up to Annavaram one side (as it would meet the requirement of pilgrims travelling to Sri Satyanarayana Swamy temple) and Srikakulam on other side (as it would be useful to those going to Arasavalli and Srikurmam temples).
The introduction of the local trains would help in reducing the load on the National Highway and minimising road accidents. This is not all, the middle class and the poor will be saved the hassle of paying three or four times the fare for travel in buses.

As many as 200 Anganwadi workers were taken into custody at various railways stations including Amadalavalasa, Palasa, Itchapuram, Ponduru and other places when they were moving to participate in the ‘Chalo Vijayawada’ programme to step up pressure on immediate implementation of wages which were hiked recently.
CITU Srikakulam District general secretary D. Govinda Rao strongly condemned the arrest of the women saying that the latter were fighting for their legitimate rights.
The CITU leader further alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government did not allow the ‘Chalo Hyderabad’ programme previously saying that the the

“Why then it is that the TDP government stopped the Chalo Vijayawada, which is within Andhra Pradesh? We will continue to agitate until the implementation of the new wage structure,” he added.

Officials on Friday busted a major child trafficking racket in Srikakulam and freed 18 children who were about to be sent to Gujarat to work on ships.
According to officials, the children were scheduled to board a train from the Srikakulam railway station on Friday night. The children, hailing from poor fishermen families, had been reportedly hired on a monthly pay of Rs. 7, 000. Some families accepted a single payment of Rs. 40, 000 each for a year. The children, who would have been taken to Kandla, Surat, and Porbandar, were to do works such as cooking and cleaning. It is said they were sexually harassed, too.

Thanks to the alertness of drivers of both APSRTC and Visakha-Gunupur passenger train, as many as 58 students had a providential escape at a level crossing at Patapatnam in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday evening.
According to local people, the railway gateman did not ensure closure of gates despite the arrival of the train near the level crossing. The bus driver, who observed the moving train at the last minute, used the reverse gear and pulled back the vehicle promptly. The loco pilot Ramana too slowed down the train, averting major mishap.

The railway officials who reached the spot assured the bus passengers that they would report the matter to the higher authorities and take action against the gateman and other staff. The train got delayed by 45 minutes following protest by passengers.

Union Railway Budget-2015 has disappointed Srikakulam people who anticipated the announcement of a railway line to industrial town Rajam and sanction of new trains to the district.Over six lakh people of the district are working in various parts of the country. Majority of them are migratory workers and travel frequently to the native district. They depend on trains which originate either from Howrah and Bhubaneswar to reach the destination. Quota in second class is very less in trains like Visakha Express and Falaknuma, forcing them to travel in jam-packed general compartments.

long pending demand is the rail connectivity to Varanasi from Srikakulam as majority of the devotees were forced to go Bhubaneswar to catch the connecting trains. Signalling system was also ignored in the Naupada-Gunupur route.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University Dean Gunta Tulasi Rao who has conducted a study on railway issues expressed dissatisfaction over non-allocation new trains and funds for developing infrastructure.

Ward Number 21 of Amudalavalasa municipal limits had an unmanned level crossing near Kuddiram village where scores of people travel across the tracks every day. The railway authorities, following pressure from locals, constructed a guard room in 2012 and installed a railway gate which was operated for a couple of weeks by a gateman. The authorities had written to the general manager, East Coast Railway for sanction of a gateman post to the Kuddiram village gate. As there was no sanctioned post, railway authorities removed the gate and locked the guard room. As a result, the equipment has now become useless.
“There will be thousands of proposals laid on the tables of railway authorities at various levels. Unless there is political intervention from the local elected representatives, these proposals are unlikely to be cleared. Due to poor coordination among the local MPs, the post might not have been sanctioned,” a senior official of Waltair railway division said.
There are several unmanned level crossings at Itchapuram, Palasa, Tekkali, Narasannapeta, Amadalavalasa and Etcherla. At every unmanned level crossing, a large number of people, mainly students, cross the tracks. Several fatal incidents have been reported in the past and cattle being run over by the trains on the tracks is very common.
 EQUIPMENT GOES WASTE
“The civil works were completed about one-and-a-half years ago. The equipment has also been acquired. However, due to lack of manpower, the gate has not been opened. There is no clarity on which railway station has jurisdiction over the gate. It could be either Amadalavalasa railway station or Dusi station. To operate the gate, a minimum of four persons are needed. There is no possibility of outsourced personnel in the Safety Department of Railways. At present, it is only an unmanned level-crossing,” a railway official said.
