Station Border Road is a key stretch providing easy access to various localities in Chromepet, including Rajendra Prasad Road, Hasthinapuram and Chitlapakkam Main Road, Chitlapakkam, Radha Nagar and Nehru Nagar.
Its usefulness is diminished by its poor surface and lack of illumination.
“The stretch is damaged at several points and water stagnates even after a mild downpour,” said K.S. Kumar, a resident of Hasthinapuram, said.

to waterlogged spots, which are avoided by motorists, the usable section of the road is narrow.
With poor illumination, the stretch becomes even more difficult to navigate after sunset.
Starting from the intersection of Chitlapakkam Main Road and Station Board Road, there are no street lights for a distance of over 500 metres.
Southern Railway officials have said steps are being taken to address the issue.
“We are ready to hand over the maintenance of the road to the Pallavapuram municipality,” the officials added.

Tambaram rail passenger terminal to be ready by year-end
The much awaited conversion of Tambaram into the third passenger terminal in the city after Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
“The civil and mechanical work involved in the Coaching Terminal project would be completed in about 10 days. The water supply mechanism would be ready in 30-40 days. In all, by the end of December, the third terminal is expected to be operational,” said Vashishta Johri, General Manager, Southern Railway, Chennai.
He,

along with Divisional Railway Manager, Anupam Sharma, and a team of officials conducted a review of the work being executed at the new coaching depot in Tambaram. He urged the technical staff and contractors to expedite the project to meet the deadline.
The present schedule of work includes construction of pit lines (to examine the rakes), a stabilising line, a full-length shunting line and four sick lines to attend to compartments needing repair. At present, nearly 250 suburban electric trains operate from Tambaram to Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu.
People of surrounding areas have for long been demanding that the station, which now sees a footfall of more than one lakh a day, be made a passenger terminal as it will save passengers returning from the southern parts of the State the trouble of having to travel to Chennai Central or Egmore.
The project, estimated to cost Rs. 34.68 crore, will benefit over one lakh commuters. Work was sanctioned after repeated demands by residents of the southern suburbs and began in 2008-2009. Southern Railway officials said the work was on track and the construction of pit lines was over and tests were on for track linking. Installation of overhead wires and networking process were expected to be completed in a few days, they added.
Loco shed work was also being completed at a fast pace, officials said, adding that an 11kV substation would be in place to provide the power supply required for the terminal building and loco sheds.

CHENNAI: Work on enhancing the railway infrastructure is on in full steam, said senior officials, listing the ongoing work on the Tambaram coaching terminal project and two new suburban lines, and plans to install CCTV cameras using Nirbhaya funds.

As many as 128 stations in the zone would have CCTV cameras that would be installed using Nirbhaya funds. “`68 crore was allotted and `28 crore sanctioned for this,” Johri added.
There are around 750 unmanned level crossings in the zone, most of them at Tiruchy and Madurai junction, the general manager said, adding that the railway had fixed the target of closing 250 unmanned level crossings every year. Work on doubling Chennai- Kanyakumari will be completed up to Madurai by the end of this year and the rest will be done in the near future. Nature versus development. It’s a recurrent theme, and a constant battle, especially in urban spaces. Development often has the upper hand. There was fresh evidence of this, when an albizia saman tree, 65 years old and an integral part of the Tambaram Railway station in the eyes of regulars, was axed recently.
The big thoongu moonji maram, as the species is called in Tamil, is said to have been felled by railway contractors for the construction of a motorway for the second entry point on the eastern side of Tambaram station. Commuters, for whom the tree has been part of the landscape and a symbol of permanence, say that while development is unavoidable, the tree could have been spared.
A

resident of Madambakkam, Venkatasubramanian Balasubramanian says, “Railways could have created an island encompassing the tree and streered the development work around it, thereby saving the tree.”
Many other commuters were on the same page, and to buttress their case, pointed out how three trees had been saved on the western side through some judicious planning, while creating a commuters’ motorway in that area.
Southern Railway officials said that before the decision to fell the tree was taken, all other options had been ruled out as unworkable. They said the big, decades-old tree was smack in the middle of the motorway which had been planned as part of efforts to improve infrastructure for the benefit of commuters.
The officials said that the Railways would plant tree saplings around the railway staff colony to make up for the loss of this majestic tree.

Chennai: Top railways officials met on Saturday and discussed measures to improve infrastructure at Tambaram Railway Station as the country's largest service provider and employer prepares to convert the facility into the city's third passenger terminal, after Chennai Central and Egmore, by October.
Officials who attended the meeting said they examined the need to set up additional water hydrants and stabling lines and new provisions for maintenance of trains.
The official said that railway employees would use the hydrants to wash and clean trains. "We are ready to start work on electrification of

cables," he said.
After the station becomes a terminal, the railways plans a pilot project in which it will operate five south-bound express trains from Tambaram, from where one passenger train currently starts, a senior railways official said. More than 90 mail, express and passenger trains and at least 240 suburban trains now halt at the station.
The railways also plans to construct a foot over-bridge at the station. Sources said the new terminal will have a slew of facilities that include a large railways-run food court.
A new platform with all passenger amenities will also come up at the railway station. Telephone booths and passenger-friendly seats are some the facilities the railways plans for the new terminal that officials hope will decongest Chennai Central and Egmore stations.
Officials said they will have a state-of-the-art arrival and display board installed on the Tambaram station platform in a few days.
Residents of localities in the vicinity of the Tambaram station and commuters have for several years pressed the demand that the railways make the station - which more than 1 lakh people use every day - a proper passenger terminal.

trains and at least 240 EMU (subur ban) trains now stop at the station.
A slew of amenities, including a food court that is said to be the largest at a railway station in the country , are being introduced. The extension of platform 1A is expected to be completed soon, whi le two toilets are coming up at the Vandalur-end. The entrance on the eastern side was widened after the cycle stand was removed to enable fourwheelers to enter and leave.
The official said work on the nearly 5,000 sq ft food court is almost complete. Equipped with a lift, it will have a takeaway selling pizzas, burgers, ice creams, etc., on the ground floor, a vegetarian restaurant on the first and a non-vegetarian restaurant on the second. Erode-based J S Caterers has won the contract. Chromepet rail users forum president V Santhanam, however, said the authorities should ensure cleanliness and make sure all amenities are maintained well.

As the Union Minister of Railways, Suresh Prabhu would lay the foundation stone marking the beginning of work on laying a third broad gauge line connecting Tambaram and Chengalpattu, on Sunday, the Tambaram railway station and its surrounding areas have received a facelift.
The Union Railways Minister would also flag off a train service between Chennai Central and Howrah, according to railway officials.
As part of the inaugural ceremony, the Southern Railway has added lustre to the staircases on the eastern side of the station, having painting them in decorative colours.
Workers

at the site said the paint would last for a longer duration than the regular one.
However, it requires maintenance and once it gets faded, a new coat should be applied.
Workers were seen painting the main entrance on the western side and the road around the railway grounds was being black-topped.
Apart from this, hundreds of workers were engaged in making a dais ready at the venue of the event – which is the Railway Grounds.
Southern Railway Divisional Railway Manager - Chennai Anupam Sharma and other officials, along with senior officials of Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force, visited the railway station and the Railway Grounds to oversee the arrangements for the function on Sunday.
Located 60 km from Chennai Beach, Chengalpattu is a fast-growing satellite town in neighbouring Kancheepuram district from where thousands travel to the State capital every day.
Now there are four lines between Chennai and Tambaram, two for long-distance trains and the other two for suburban trains.
Thousands of commuters from areas between Tambaram and Chengalpattu will, in a year’s time, have better access to Chennai Beach.
The commissioning of the doubling work from Chengalpattu to Villupuram along with the third line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu will ensure dedicated tracks for operating additional suburban train services between Chengalpattu and Chennai Beach — which are about 250 a day now.
