Chennai: As efforts to move towards a cashless economy gains momentum, the railways is chipping in by promoting paperless (mobile) tickets.
The paperless (mobile) ticket booking facility 'utsonmobile' app, which is available in Chennai for suburban travel only has been extended to new routes. The app currently being used by passengers in the following routes - Chennai Central/Beach - Tiruvallur, Chennai Central/Beach - Gummidipundi and Chennai Beach - Tambaram - Chengalpattu sections has been extended to new routes.
According to sources, the facility has been extended from 15 January with an intetsion to bring

more commuters under its fold. With this new measure, commuters on Chennai Central/Beach - Tiruvallur - Arakkonam - Tiruttani, Chennai Central/Beach -Gummidipundi - Sulurpeta and Chennai Beach -- Tambaram -- Chengalpattu -- Tirumalpur will also be able to book local train tickets through the mobile app.
SECURITY ENHANCEMENT
It is heard that the railways will be implementing Integrated Security System (ISS) in the second phase. ISS which is a composite surveillance mechanism is already under implementation in 14 stations in Southern Zone and under the second phase the mechanism will be implemented in few more stations. About 27 railway stations have been identified for implementation in the second phase, according to sources. It is said that the railway board has asked all the zones of Indian Railways to nominate in this regard. So a list of 27 stations have been prepared which comprise Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Chengalpattu, Gummidipoondi, Velachery, Sulurpeta and Kanchipuram among others.
SECURITY MEASURES
Meanwhile, Southern Railway is working on increase security measures in stations in various divisions. Efforts to instal CCTV cameras in Railway stations in Chennai division are underway. This is a fallout of the gruesome murder of techie Swati at Nungambakkam Railway Station last year. However, the work has proceeded at a tardy pace and it is said that a change in the policy led to the delay.
Sources say that the camera installation work was supposed to be done by zonal railways, but after a review the job has been handed over to RailTel. Now a fresh deadline has been set and the work will be done in a phased manner by June and December this year. Camera installation will be done on an all India level to ensure uniformity, say the sources.
LHB COACHES
The Railways is also keen to augment the quality of coaches. As a first step, sources said Chennai Central - Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Central Mail trains will be provided with LHB (Linke Hoffmann Busch) coaches. Consequently, two rakes of Train No 12623/12624 will be converted into LHB stock.
Railway authorities say while rake no 1 in Train 12623 (Chennai Central to Thiruvananthapuram) and Train 12624 (Thiruvananthapuram to Chennai Central) will be converted into LHB rake on 18 and 19 January respectively, rake no 2 in both the trains will be added on 19 and 20 January respectively. Consequently, the composition of the train would be revised as one First Class AC-cum-AC 2-tier, one AC 2-tier, four AC 3-tier, 11 sleeper class and three general second class coaches.

The southern railway has extended operation of suburban trains from Tiruttani and Sulurpetta to Velachery MRTS section via Beach for three more weeks owing to good commuter patronage.
The 51 services which were supposed to be run on a trial basis till August 13, has now been extended till September 3.
It is estimated that more than 30,000 commuters coming from north and northwestern line switch trains at Beach to reach Velachery . The services began on July 25.

Mohanram, former member of railway users consultative committee and a regular commuter, said, “Railways should make the trains permanent as patronage is good. There are several people who travel from Tiruvallur and Gummidipoondi to the heart of the city for work. The services are currently aimed at people who come to work in IT companies.“
He said that railways should also expedite a long-pending demand of suburban commuters to introduce a circular train service -BeachChengelpet-Tirumalpur-Arakonam-Tiruvallur-Beach.“This will be of help because a large number of people come from southern suburbs to the city. There are people who travel from Villupuram to Chennai daily for work. The plan is stuck because a small stretch on Tirumalpur-Arakonam route near INS Rajali in Arakonam is yet to be electrified,“ he added.
Asenior railway officer said, “Several commuters have welcomed the services. There is good patronage. We are not able to make the trains permanent now because commuter data analysis should be sent to railway board for approval. The board has to give green signal to make a train service permanent.“
