BENGALURU: Taking a major step towards monetising railway assets and upgrading passenger amenities, Indian Railways on Wednesday invited tenders for development of vacant railway land in the vicinity of 23 railway stations. This includes Bangalore Cantonment and Yeshwantpur in Bangalore Railway Division.
Briefing newspersons at the Divisional Railway Manager’s office before Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the ‘Station Redevelopment Programme’ (announced in this year’s Railway budget) from New Delhi through video link, General Manager of South Western Railway, A K Gupta, said a total of 22.5 acres in Bengaluru will be offered for private development.
“This

will include 20 acres located 4 km from Yeshwantpur station and 2.25 acres near Cantonment station, located along Thimmaiah Road connecting Queen’s Road,” he said.
Tenders were floated for commercial development of these places on Wednesday and the last date for accepting bids is June 1. The Swiss Challenge Method, which is more transparent than the regular tendering process, has been adopted.

“The bidder can have any commercial venture in railway land, which will be offered on a 45-year lease. Simultaneously, the two stations need to be provided with all conceivable passenger amenities and facilities so that they become iconic ventures,” he added.
Fifteen more stations in South Western Railway will be developed. These include Belagavi, Ballari, Vijayapura, Davangere, Dharwad, Hosapete, Hubballi, Krishnarajapuram, Shivamogga, Sai Prashanti Nilayam, Vasco Da Gama, Bangarpet and Bengaluru city (Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna) stations, Gupta said.
In the second phase, bids for redevelopment of 100 stations will be put out in June. In the third and final phase in December, 250-plus stations will be covered.
Suresh Prabhu, in a speech telecast live across many railway divisions, said that the space near railway stations falls under the “most valuable real estate in the country.”
“The entire Stations Redevelopment Programme was targeting `1 lakh crore to be obtained by monetising 2,200 acres of land across 100 cities across the country,” he said. Altogether 400-plus A1 and A stations would be developed.

The Railway Horata Samiti has said that none of the four new trains via Vijayapura promised in the last Railway Budget have been introduced so far.
In a release here on Friday, Vishwanath Bhavi, president of the samiti, said that the trains announced were a semi-speed train Tejas; Hamsafar; Uday and a reservation-free train. He said that they were supposed to ply between Solapur, Vijayapura and Hubballi.
Though the work on a broad gauge line between Solapur, Vijayapura and Gadag was completed in 1992-93, super fast trains such as Garib Rath, Duranto, Karnataka

Samparka Kranti and Rajdhani run from Vijayapura. The release said that the gauge was never upgraded to ply high-speed trains on them, and added that the substandard work by the contractors was the reason behind it. He said that because of this, the Railways was unable to ply high-speed trains covering Vijayapura.

The Railway Horata Samiti of the district has demanded that the Ministry of Railways extend some of the train services to Vijayapura and has urged the Union Government to announce the same in the upcoming railway budget.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu was not planning to introduce new trains in his budget, Vishwanath Bhavi, president of the samiti, has stated in a release.
Hence, Mr. Suresh Prabhu should extend the services of trains already operating, he added.
Mr.

Bhavi said that since 2014, Solapur has trains directly to Mumbai six days a week.
The train starts from Solapur at 8:30 p.m. and reaches Mumbai at 6 a.m. For long, the Samiti has been demanding that the Union government start the train from Vijayapura instead of Solapur, as there is no direct train to Mumbai from here.
Instead of starting the train at 8:30 p.m. from Solapur, the same train could be started from Vijayapura at 5:30 p.m.
Mr. Bhavi said that with certain changes, it is easy for the railways to extend this facility to Vijayapura.
Mr. Bhavi urged the government to meet the long pending demand of reducing the journey hours of the Gol Gumbaz Express to ensure that the train reaches Bengaluru and Mysuru at least two hours earlier compared to the present timings.
He also urged the Railway Ministry to make the train a 24-bogie train to accommodate more passengers, the press release added.

BENGALURU: Sitting next to his flower vendor mother at Raichur railway station, Shantu, in his childhood, points to a train and asks her why people go to Bengaluru. The mother replies that villagers go there to earn more, but advises him to stick to his roots in the village, where the river Krishna flows.
Shantu grows up and the floods of 2009 leave his family devastated. Like many from his district, he takes the Basava Express, the train connecting Bagalkot and Mysuru via Bengaluru, and passes through many North Karnataka districts, on its way to the Garden City.Shantu, with a passion for painting, manages to get a job with the BBMP to become a wall painter. He draws the Virupaksha temple of

Hampi, power station of Shaktinagar in Raichur where he grew up, and tries to get over the identity crisis Bengaluru pushes him into.
Similar is the story of Basavanappa, who is in the city of dreams to save money and repay his debt in his village in Ballari. This is the theme of Basava Express, a Kannada play presented by Samprati Theatre which held its pre miere at Rangashankara last Thursday -it was a good attempt to study the sub ject of migration to cities in contempo rary India.
Writer Raghavendra Acharya, 26, a journalist and native of Raichur, along with director Basav Biradar, 35, a software engineer and native of Bijapur, describe Basava Express as a train of migration. "I have seen people from my dis trict losing ground after floods. The train charge to Bengaluru was around Rs 100 then and Bengaluru was the biggest destination. And it's not just floods, every drought season brings thousands of villagers, most of whom come as construction labourers. Some literates get on to Kannada call centres, work in malls or Coffee Day outlets. But they lose themselves in the metropolis. The train here is a metaphor of sorts. The play explores relationships between people, and between people and the city they inhabit," said Raghavendra.
"We have showcased that such a dilemma or identity crisis among the inhibited is also short-lived, and people go on with life as they don't have the option of a better life back home. The issue is not limited to domestic migration in the state. There could be somebody painting the Taj Mahal on a public wall. Or there could somebody doing the Qutab Minar," explains Basav.
Shantu, the young painter in the play , convinces his mother, who appears is his dream, that the road he chose is the right one. His mother tells him Bengaluru has hundreds of roads but wherever you go, you come back to the same spot. "These roads go nowhere," she points out. During the play, the paintings of Hampi and Shaktinagar power station gain life and discuss life in Bengaluru. "Is it true that Bengaluru is growing? I don't think so. It is getting shrunk amid all the tall buildings. Unlike Raichur, where the sun burns people, it is hiding behind mega structures here. Everybody is adjusting here. If somebody faces difficulty in counting the stars, they should come here. The sky here has shrunk amid buildings and you can count them in this limited space," the power station tells Hampi, which is still living in its past glory.
The play was performed by Sriharsha HS, Karthik Gowtham, Kiran Kumar, Akhila Srinivas and Sriharsha GN.The artwork was done by Mahantesh Doddamani, sound design by Subramanya Shastri, light work by Lekha Naidu and movement director is Sowmya Jaganmurthy.

district significantly.
The doubling of railway line is also expected to reduce the travel time as the many trains will no longer have to wait for availability of track.
It may be noted that on Wednesday, the Union government approved this project which was before the government for long.
While this new line would give additional railway connectivity to Bagalkot district also, it would ease the traffic and improve connectivity between Bengaluru-Guntakal-Pune-Mumbai and Hospet-Gagad-Hubballi-Goa.
The new line would boost the industrial sector as the line would be used to transport goods for industries such as steel, cement and materials.
“This new route will open up a gateway for the industrial development of Vijayapura district and would also help Railways earn higher profit for transporting goods,” said Vishwanath Bhavi, president of Railway Horata Samiti.
While doubling of the line would help industrial sector, even the passengers would also enjoy its benefits as the same line would enable the railways to give connectivity to several major trains that connects to important cities of the country.
One of the primary reasons for doubling of line is to provide separate railway link to Kudagi hermal plant here for transporting coal.
The 4000-MW power plant which is expected to start generating 800MW from second quarter of next year, needs coal. NTPC, which is establishing the plant, has already paid Rs. 946 crore to Railway Ministry for laying a 134-kilometre long railway line.
Since the work of thermal plant is taking up a face pace, the pressure on Railway department is high to complete the work on priority.
Meanwhile, several leaders of Vijayapura and Bagalkot have expressed happiness over the decision, they have also urged the government to complete the work in time-bound manner without giving room for delay.
