On completion of the project, energy-efficient, eco-friendly Mainline Electric Multiple Units (MEMU trains) can be operated in these sections, paving the way for reduction in commuting time for rail users of delta regions.
Scores of students commuting to educational institutions on this section would be benefitted, it said.
In addition, pilgrims visiting religious centres in and around Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai, Kumbakonam and Thanjavur can take advantage of the improved connectivity, the release added.

MADURAI: A team of rail fans on Monday celebrated the 39th anniversary of the launch of Nos 12635/12636 Madurai - Chennai Egmore - Madurai Vaigai Superfast Express trains.
The Vaigai Express was launched on August 15, 1977.

and others arrived here on Sunday night. On Monday morning, the team decorated the locomotive of Madurai - Chennai Vaigai Superfast Express before the train departed around 7am. They honoured the loco staff with garlands and presented mementos to them.
Followed by the function, the team travelled in the same train up to Viluppuram where they got down. From Viluppuram, they will travel back to Madurai on the Chennai Egmore - Madurai Vaigai Express.
There will be a cake cutting ceremony when the train reaches Madurai Junction after 9pm.
During the cake cutting ceremony, the rail fans are also planning to honour retired running staff of Vaigai Express as a token of gratitude. "We keep demanding so many trains and amenities from railways every time. Why don't we celebrate what we have at hand," Arun asked.

VILLUPURAM : An alert farmer prevented a major rail mishap when he flagged down a passenger train that was closing in on a section of track that was hanging in the air after the overnight showers eroded the soil beneath it, near Mailam on Tuesday.
According to sources, shepherds and farmers from Nedi village used to cross the tracks daily, and at times, the cattle get run over by trains, crossing the route at high speed. Several farmers too have suffered injuries while attempting to save the animals. Following the request by farmers, the railway authorities decided to construct a subway for the villagers, and the work has been going on for a year now. On Tuesday morning, Jegan, a farmer,

while visiting the construction site, noticed that the soil beneath the tracks had been washed away by rains, leaving the tracks and concrete sleepers unsupported. He alerted other villagers, who gathered at the spot.
At that time, the Villupuram-Tambaram passenger train started closing in on the damaged section. Fearing that it would derail, the villagers started signaling for it to stop. Noticing the huge crowd, the loco pilot stopped the train. He then took a picture of the tracks and sent it to the railway officials at Villupuram junction. Later, on the directions of the officials, he took the train through the damaged portion at a slow pace. Other trains were also asked to slow down at the spot. Then workers arrived and fixed the damage.
Railway officials and other villagers praised Jegan for his timely intervention, which probably saved many lives.
