Dozens of trains will run faster from Thursday as Indian Railways took steps to improve their speed, punctuality and revamped train timings. The speed of express trains, including Rajdhanis and Shatabdis has been increased between 10 and 30 kmph.
Travel time by the Puri-Gandhidham Express has been reduced by 2 hours 35 minutes, which is the maximum reduction so far, followed by the Patna-Bandra Express by 105 minutes.
The speeds of Mumbai Rajdhani, Ahmedabad-Mumbai Shatabdi Express have been augmented to 130 kmph on some sections of the route against the existing 120 kmph.
...

The speeds have been increased segment wise on the basis of infrastructure boost.
Surprisingly, the much-awaited 160 kmph Delhi-Agra train falling under the jurisdiction of Northern Railway still remains a distant dream despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal interest in the matter. At present, the maximum speed of the Agra Shatabdi from New Delhi is 150 kmph, which was achieved during the tenure of Lalu Prasad as Railway Minister.
As compared to other zones, including the Western Zone, which has been able to augment the speed of trains and reduce travel time, not much progress has been made within the jurisdiction of Northern Railways except for some cosmetic changes involving  Electrical Multiple Unit trains and a few long distance trains.
While terminals of some trains have been reshuffled, timings of Rajdhanis and Shatabdis run by the Northern Zone remain unchanged.
After much delay, the Railway Ministry on Wednesday released its new All India Railway Time Table known as “Trains at a Glance” that will come into effect from October 1, 2015 and last till June 2016. Usually the new train time table comes into effect from July 1 every year, but this time it was delayed as the existing time table was completely rejigged and the speed of trains was also augmented wherever the tracks supported it.
While the travel time of 12951 Mumbai Central-New Delhi Rajdhani Express has been reduced by 25 minutes, the 12952 New Delhi-Mumbai Central Rajdhani Express has been speeded up by 20 minutes. Similarly 12009 Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express has been speeded up by 25 minutes, and the 12971 Bandra Terminus-Bhavnagar Express speeded up by 30 minutes.
The trains which have been speeded up by 60 minutes and more are Patna-Bandra Express that has been speeded up by 105 minutes, the 16333 Veraval-Trivandrum Express (Via Vasai Road) by 65 minutes, Gandhidham- Nagercoil Express (Via Vasai Road) by 90 minutes, Okha-Ernakulam Express (Via Vasai Road) by 105 minutes, 19311 Pune-Indore Express (Via Vasai Road) by 80 minutes and the 19454 Puri-Gandhidham Express (Via Surat) that has been speeded up by 2 hours 35 minutes.
The travel time of 16502 Yeshwantpur-Ahmedabad Express (Via Surat) has been reduced by 75 minutes, Allahabad - Ahmedabad Express (Via Surat) has been speeded up by 80 minutes. Additional Commercial stoppages have been provided to Duronto Express trains with no changes in its original timings. So far there were no commercial stoppages for this category of trains.
Other trains whose travel time been reduced are Ahmedabad- Nagpur Prerna Express (by 45 minutes), and Ahmedabad-Howrah Express and Okha-Tuticorn Vivek Express (by 10 minutes).
Some trains have been renumbered:  12723/12724 Hyderabad - New Delhi AP Express has been re-named Telangana Express 17035/17036; Secunderabad - Sirpur Kaghaznagar Express has been renamed Kaghaznagar Express 22415/22416, and  Visakhapatnam - New Delhi Express has been renamed as Andhra Pradesh AC Express.

Simply superb stuff by Western Railway, one of the best zones of IR. They had upgraded their infrastructure massively since few years while some zones are still lagging behind at a snail pace. Hope they learn something from WR

Yes, there are equal number of eligible trains on IGP-ET/NGP sections which can run at 120/130 MPS
But Bct-Ndls route enjoys strategic advantage, If IR wishes to other routes too can be upgraded...

sad thing is that only railfans and regular passengers will notice this.
I strongly feel that until and unless whole country demands speedup then only other zones will react.

Walk into a long-dis tance train and you are welcomed by the pong from the bathroom. A little more in, and you need to really make your way through the rubbish on the ground. Somehow, you manage to reach your berth just to realize that the seat is stained and you wonder, “Will I ever travel in a train that is clean in India“?
Well, maybe the unimaginable may soon come true.Eight long-distance trains maintained by the South Western Railway, Bangalore division, will soon have an `On Board House Keeping Service (OBHS) '.

a month, you will see staff in uniform sitting in some corner in your coach. There is every likelihood that they will be deputed to make sure you have a clean, hygienic and comfortable journey. Each staff member will handle three to four coaches. He will make sure toilets are cleaned at least three times a day and the floor is spic and span. Even after all this if you have a problem or complaint, the staff will be at your service throughout the journey.
Anil Kumar Agarwal, DRM South Western Railways, said, “We want to make sure that passengers have a comfortable journey. Within the next one month, an OBHS will be introduced in eight trains that travel for more than a day. Any passenger with any complaint about cleanliness can con tact the staff appointed and they will immediately act.“
The service is already operational in 550 trains maintained by the Indian Railways and one train maintained by the South Western Railway, Bangalore division.
Anit Saran, senior divisional mechanical engineer, said, “The service has been successful in Rajdhani trains and hence we decided to extend it to other trains. The eight trains chosen are the ones that are maintained by our division.“

The Railways will begin trial of providing pre-cooked branded meals in three trains from this week. Railway minister Sadanand Gowda had announced the proposal in the Rail Budget in July to introduce branded meals in trains. The three trains shortlisted for the trail of providing branded meals are Paschim Express, Karnatka Express and Banaglore-Ahmedabad Express. “MTR and Haldiram will provide pre-cooked meals in Karnatka Express and Paschim Express respectively. The meals will be vegetarian and the passengers will get them through the existing pantry in the trains,” said a senior official.
The Bangalore-Ahmedabad Express will get the pre-cooked meals from ITC, with both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian options available for the passengers.“The railways will add more trains under the trail for providing pre-cooked

meals based on the passenger feedback. Also, the existing pantry in the three trains will continue to provide meals from their respective caterers along with the branded meals,” added the official.
The member (traffic) of the Rail Board, Devi Pandey, has met the representatives of MTR, Haldiram and ITC to check the quality of the meals to be provided in the three trains himself, said the official.
The Railway Board has designated the officials to periodically inspect the quality of meals being provided by the branded firms in the three specified trains.
