Not only for this train, for all trains starting beyond south to Madurai, catering provided mostly in MDU or VPT and thereafter can't get food. So better bringing own food or arranging from outside hotels is better for passengers from VPT and MDU
You get nice meenakshi hotel idlies, which sale by vendors in platforms. that's the one of the best in this route

I was in madurai for 6 years till 2007.
Murugan idli shop was very famous for best idlis packed along with sambar, chutney separately.
It was in 2nd platform from where Vaigai used to start.
