Yes- you can tell the TTE that you can adjust him with waitlisted tickets in one of your berths and will not obstruct other passengers- you will need a ticket from PRS counter as ircrc ticket will get automatically cancelled

I read an article dataed July 2013 which says that "Now, waitlist tickets will not be allowed in reserved rly coaches"

That is when all tickets are waitlisted it is mandatorily not allowed- but if you are not going to create nuiscance and stay with your reserved passengers it is going to be fine
If it is an e-ticket. It is strict "No". It will be considered as Ticket less travel and will end your realtive in trouble with fines.
If its is PRS ticket(ticket taken from counter), then before entering the train, talk with TTE. 99% he will allow you. Advice from my side is talk before entering train. If you don't sometimes TTE may be in bad mood and may say no, fine etc and all. So better talk before entering train.
