Hit hard by an increase in bulk diesel prices that have sent its annual fuel bill soaring by 15%, the railways has turned its attention on the neglected track electrification programme, increasing the target by around 300 km for the next fiscal to around 1,600 km. This would be the railways' biggest electrification drive.
“We would be electrifying around 1,500-1,600 km of track in the next fiscal. We are also looking at public-private partnership (PPP) model for the same,” a railway board official said.

but given that 1 cr expenditure per km electrification how can rly electrify these routes? AFA priority is concerned ET COI route followed by BWN MLDT KIR NJP GHY DBRG route should be given priority...but who'll raise the funds?
Well, i think at present IR is considering those routes which are feeder routes for either Eastern DFC or Western DFC. The DFCCIL is given a target to complete EDFC and WDFC by 2016 and has told IR/CORE/RVNL to electrify and strengthen the feeder routes respectively by March 2016. And apart from feeder routes, IR is also considering and prioritising those routes which can serve as detours to main lines, in case of emergency/accident/protests etc.
FYKI, HWH BWN MLDT (BJU KIR) NJP GHY DBRG forms part of the extended Golden Quadrilateral.& yes the majority of foodgrains that is loaded from Punjab & Haryana are towards North East(via Rail) because of the Special Status the 7 states has received.
Our route, i.e popularly known in IR as RBR, Rajpura Bathinda Route, we have 3 thermal plants at Bathinda, one NFL plant, One HPCL Refinery and One Gujrat Ambuja Cement unit. All the coal for TPP is coming from eastern mines. It is mandatory to have minimum 7 or more rake load of coal should go to these TPP at Bathinda EVERYDAY and one is a Rajpura. So, i had read a document under DFCCIL that the coal for TPPs shall move on EDFC and then move over to feeder routes under IR. Trans loaded with food grains pass from here , i mean PTA Patiala, there is been a lot of movement going on this section to upgrade as per DFC. And yes, this route is also a GQ route. We get trains hauled by WDG4s of SBI, LKO, Siliguri, Sabarmati, Bhagat Ki Kothi etc, and ALCos from Andal, Katni,...
