The present RRI system was installed by Siemens India in 1975-76 with a lifespan of 25 years. Now that the system outlived its utility by 15 years, it has to be replaced with a host of new signalling and telecommunication devices. A huge network of underground cables is also to be substituted with brand new ones. The sanction for installing a new RRI along with yard remodelling was given many years ago, but the projects did not take off due to financial constraints and operational reasons. Under the existing set-up, several trains cannot enter platforms 8, 9, and 10 due to technicalities associated with the old RRI system. There are many other operational issues to be sorted out as soon as possible, but the matter is pending with the Railway Board.
