I will recommend Matsya - a restaurant attached to Hotel Udupi Home at Egmore. It is located at the traffic signal next to Egmore station, just before the Child Hospital. They used to advertise with words "Matsya - vegetarian restaurant for whom time and money does not matter"
But, I take food in a small mess near Chepauk Stadium called Amma mess. It is very low priced and tasty. But the seating is comfortable with just small table and stools to sit.

It is always crowded. I prefer this as it is nearer to my head office at Chennai.
Saravana Bhavan is a famous chain of vegetarian hotels in Chennai with reputation on par with Hotel Annapurna of Coimbatore. But I don't like it as I feel it is very costly and they use lot of oil.
