Berth allotment in 3AC- Recently I have booked ticket travelling on 7Jan 2017 for 5 passengers, of which 2 are senior citizen (72-65) respectively, but on allocation it came to be senior citizen lady (72) got upper berth and my self (36) got middle berth, i can't understand what algorithm reservation system is using, and when complainted this I got a reply , that berth allocation according to availability, so book ticket separately for senior citizens.
yes, IRCTC allots seats on random basis on availablity, but they try to provide seats nearby which are under one PNR. To avail the lower berth quota for the senior citizens, you have to fill the form seperately. In your case, since there are two senior citizens, you fill two forms seperately for them. Ask the booking clerk, to provide seats nearby. on irctc, you yourself can fill the choice of your preferred coach.
If lower birth are not available in train then any seat will be given to senior citizen

On an off season travel I had opted for booking ticket through IRCTC and found that 75 WL, so took a thakal ticket and boarded the train , and to my surprise half of the berth was empty so in a compartment only 30 persons...
