Antyodaya Express: Sneak-peek into Indian Railways’ new ‘modern’ superfast train for unreserved passengers

Deen Dayalu coaches and Humsafar Express, Indian Railways is getting ready to introduce the all new Antyodaya Express. The Antyodaya Express was first announced by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in this year’s Railway Budget and sources tell FE Online that the train will be ready by the end of this month. “20 coaches and two power cars will be sent to the South Eastern Railway division by December 25,” a person close to the matter told FE Online.
Antyodaya Express has been envisioned as an unreserved, superfast service, that will ply on high density routes. “Antyodaya Express will be a long-distance, fully unreserved, superfast train service, for the common man to be operated on dense routes,” Prabhu had said in his speech. The train will have modern facilities and multiple comforts for the unreserved passenger, a move that is likely to benefit and bring cheer to the common man.
Antyodaya Express will be similar to the Deen Dayalu coaches that Railways introduced earlier this year. The only difference is that Antyodaya Express will be a full train, that is its coaches will be connected (vestibule). The seats of the Antyodaya Express will be more comfortable compared to the general sleeper class ones. The train will also boast of water purifiers, toilet occupation indication display boards, bio-toilets, fire extinguishers with anti-theft arrangement, cushioned luggage racks with coat hooks, LED lights, more mobile charging points and enhanced capacity dustbins. “The toilets in Antyodaya Express will be modular just like those in the AC-1st class coach of Rajdhani Express,” sources said.

The LHB-type (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches are being manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. The interior panelling of the coaches has been done with aluminium composite panels, similar to Deen Dayalu.
Prabhu had announced five new services in this year’s Railway Budget; Deen Dayalu coaches, Humsafar Express, Antyodaya Express, Tejas and UDAY (Utkrisht DoubleDecker Air-conditioned Yatri). While Deen Dayalu coaches have started plying, Humsafar Express will soon begin service on the Anand Vihar-Gorakhpur route. The routes of Antyodaya Express are yet to be finalised.
