Trip report of Island + rest at PGT
Part 1: Island journey
Till 2016 February never got a chance to travel by the Island. But post Feb 2016, this is my 3rd time travel by this legend. Ticket was in RAC while booking confirming well in S3 41,43 & 44
Reached SBC on 5th by 7:15PM just to hear the departing announcement
...
of the 12627 Karnataka Express to NDLS. SWR has slightly changed the font of TB of this train now, with a light blue forming the background and a dark blue font. Sharp 7:20Pm, Karnataka departed.
16526 was stationed on PF-3 and as usual the doors locked and lights not switched on. Pf-2 was waiting incoming 12609 from MAS. Royapuram WAP4 as usual formed our regular link. 16523/17 rake was stationed on Pf-5 indicating that 16232 has left on time and most likely overtaken by 12627 at BYPL. RPM WAP7 was on Pf-6 with tthe BWT bound 16522 the shortest Express
At 7:35PM, the Erode WDG-3A pulled in the late running 56513 pass from Karaikkal(Pronounced Kaaraikaal) . The announcer struggling to pronounce the same pronouncing it as Karaikkkkal with extra stress on the "kkal". 16522 left as soon as 56513 arrived
Went back to my coach and by now lights were on. Boarded and settled in our seats. Coach was a 98 made coach with no dining tables and charging points. Settled down to witness the shunting in of the 11304 Udyan rake onto PF-1.
at 8:02PM we got the starter to proceed as announcement went on that 12678 ERS ICE will arrive shortly. We slowly cleared the points and LP was in no mood to speed up. We literally crawled through the Bangalore Central district moving like a caterpillar. Erode alco twins whizzed past with the 12678 running 20 mins late. We were halted at BNC outer and slowly proceeded into BNC. PF-2A had a WDG4 attached 56503 passenger from BZA which had arrived BNC at 7:50PM running 2.5 hrs late.. A WAP1 & WAP7 rested in BNC sidings of Pf-2 side
After a long halt of 5 minutes, we proceeded. BNCE again we slowed down and almost came to a halt before the signal cleared for proceed again. Late running 12609 from Chennai crossed us behind RPM WAP7 outside BNCE and went through the main line at BYPL again getting a red . As we slowed down at BYPL, the MEMU to KPN running almost an hour late occupied PF-1 while the mainline towards SBC was occupied GY alco twins hauled BCNA. Through the other loop, 12296 Sanghamithra, chasing the late running 12609 went by with BCNA blocking the view completely
We entered into the very crowded KJM. Continous outflow of trains from SBC side caused the crowd. People came to the window enquiring if it was train bound to Katpaid/Chittoot etc which i nodded in negative. The luggage by the passengers indicated that 12864 to Howrah from Yeshvantapur was yet to arrive. Which meant PF-3 crowd was for 16525, 12864 and 56213. On the other side, PF-1 was occupied with passengers waiting for the 16340 bound to CSTM
We got a clear and as we proceeeded, the LP notched up on the green. acceleration was evident well and speeds touched 3 figures as we blasted past the Hoodi halt. again had a slowdown and a complete stop at WFD when RPM WAP7 showed its presence with the 12607 Lalbagh from MAS. The next halt was Malur where Erode twins showed presence with the 16340 having been overtaken by the 12607
After Malur, the LP showed his agression again and the remaining stations were just done past. Occupying the track side window, noticed a flickering green at my 90 degrees and after 30 secs noticed that my engine has curved. Being at 5th coach from loco, many signals were visbile at the curves taken before I noticed the LP curving it. At Tyakal, WAG7 hauled Container rake slowed down to enter the loop most likely to wait till the 12027 supremo takes the precedence
We slowed down for points clearance at 21:40hrs just as WAP4 accelerated the same way with the 12027 shatabdi bound to SBC running late. We entered onto PF-3 of BWT and the WAP7 showed its presence as it got ready to follow the shatabdi with the return 16521 SBC Express. The MEMU rakes were resting in the sidings.
Post BWT, the moonlit night gave a good company and so did the curving signals. WAG7 hauled another container rake went past at Kamasamudram and that marked a eerie silence around as there was no other crossings scheduled for time. A 2 minute halt at Kuppam was despatched with ease and curving through the eastern ghats seperating from the up track for some time, we join them back at Somanayakkanpatti at 22:30hrs and slowed down completely, switching to the SBC bound line, later leaving them for Tirupattur byepass line. The Freight siding line of Jolarpettai came from our left and joined us. A Red signal at the end we come to a halt. By this time the berths were laid and I was lying in the Middle berth and the halt gave me the much required excitement
Time ticked. 5 mins later saw the mainline track to Salem turn Green. The moment i was waiting for. Time for the No.19 Trivandrum Mail (12623)and kept my eyes focussed.
Paam Paam Paam.. Honk of a loco.. Very excited, i turn my head to get hit in the Upper berth. The rake had berth clearance just for sleeping and a slight upwards movement above the hip results in this hit. Nevertheless, like an ostrich, i use my neck.. Paam Paam.. Oh no.. it was on line towards JTJ.. The Mumbai bound 16382 Jayanthi proceeds to JTJ and I watch the rake giving a parallel angle to my waiting rake. As lights of 1st 2 coaches pass by, the roar was heard. 12623 gets blocked by the Jayanthi running towards SA and by the time Jayanthi clears my view, 12623 shows of its EOG saying byeee
Anyway nothing more to do, went into sleep mode as we entered TPT where a WAG7 BOXN cross us. A good sleep later, bridge sound woke me up as we crossed the Kaveri river near Erode at very high speed.
Went back to sleep again
Woke up again at 3:40AM as we were exiting CBE. Lay down in my berth and woke up around 4:10 as we crossed Walayar. Post Walayar, we were taken on the reverse line. Looks like the Walayar Kanjikkode section is a twin single line section, as we moved on the right side line having signals facing both the sides. Giving respect to the Speed restrictions, the LP proceeded slowly at major sections and as we entered into Kangikkode, a WAG7 hauled special express crossed us at good speed most likely the Hyderabad bound special. At 4:45AM, we entered into PGT station as ERS WDM3A occupied PF-2 with the Nilambur Road Pass
The online site showed the KSRTC bus to Silent valley information centre at Mukkali is at 6:35 & 9:35 and the normal journey time is 2.5 hrs. With a reporting time at 12, the 9:35 bus seemed a better option. Keeping the luggage with my mom at thw waiting room, we went to enquire about retirning room availability. Non-AC rooms at Rs.200/- per head available. Myself and dad went to the room booking counter which inturn functions as an enquiry counter.
Went there and there was another person ahead of us making the enquiry. As he was handed over the form, we asked for ourselves. He asked for the ID card. in the meantime people barged into the queue as we gave the form. For a second I was shocked and later realised the reason
Pass 1: Sir West Coast.. Clerk: Platform not announced sir
Pass 2: Sir next train to Calicut- Clerk: SF Mangalore mail coming to 3.. 16527 coming to 1
Pass 3: Sir Yeshvantapur Express- Clerk: Pass 1
Myself: Sir, how much to pay.. he thinks looks at me.,. which Platform number.. Yeah Rs.600/-. Please pay the reservation counter
Pass 4 & 5: Nilambur pass Aleepey Express . Nilambur pass Pf-2, Allepey PF-1
With the receipt in my hand, me and dad walk back to waiting room to pick my mom along with the luggage. The 01 Mail (12601) has arrived on Pf-3 in the meantime and took a sparse amount of crowd. PF-1 had the maximum crowd waiting for both the Calicut bound train and Ernakulam bound train. I was thinking about people avoding 12601 for 16527 when dad said "Probably many prefer 16527 for PGT/SRR section as generally not many travel to CLT in this train buses taking a very shorter time. Slowly we pulled in with the luggage
Announcement came back to life.. 22638 Chennai bound Westcoast is running late by 1 hr 10 mins and is expected to arrive at 6:00.. Inconvinience caused is deeply regretted followed by the next...12626 Kerala Express bound to Trivandrum is running late by 2 hrs 30 mins and is expected to arrive at 9AM. Inconvinience caused is deeply regretted
Slowly me move into the Non-Ac room on the 1st floor. Keeping the luggage, i went to the curtain to check the facing. A WDG-3A was roaring with the fans visible beyond the FOB right below my room as it had arrived with tthe 16527 CAN Express from YPR.
Looking at the alco, I slowly pushed my hand down the curtain and on chair.. shreeik.. there was a small prick and my hand retraced back. something jumped.. a small mouse.. jumped onto the floor and it made tis way to the other corner of the room angry that I disturbed its sleep. The attendant came with the bedspread and pillow covers which looked neat. A ear shattering honk by the 16527 loco indicated its departure. I laid down on the bed to catch up an hours sleep
minutes past 16527, announcement went for the 56611 nilambur pass from PF-2. Slowly announcement went for the 22639 Allepey coming from Chennai and a WAP7 brought it . I tossed around in the bed. After a 5 minute halt, it departed. The outside was becoming bright and watch showed 5:45AM. Summer still continues said my dad as he went down to get a newspaper. The ERS WDM-3A gave a loud honk and left with the NIL pass. There was no announcement yet for the Westcoast and i checked the NTES status. Train had just crossed Ottapalam meaning a minimum 6:30 arrival at PGT.
i got up and sat on the chair and few minutes later a ICF Raj liveried rake pulled in sans announcements. Dad also came back into the room and said, a train went without halting through Pf-5 all AC. TVC Raj doesnt take this route right. i said no it goes via KR. I moved the curtain a bit and spotted the "X" a distance away. i said, let me go down and check and anyway checked it online. Turned out to be the 04425 KCVL-NZM AC special.
Mom got up in the meantime with a teasing smile- so I guess you slept well for past 35 mins.. I smiled back.. Not even a wink you would have slept considering the continous announcements that went by. Wheres is my dear West Coast she asked. I replied he is still far off and will come.
I told dad and went down to check for newspapers and trains. Time was 6:30 and i checked no announcements for any train. Went to check the display board and all boards were blank with sorry for inconvinience pasted. Went to Pf-1. Near the FoB there was a newspaper vendor. Checked the newspaper and realised i had left my wallet in the room. Went back to the room took the wallet and came for the newspaper. In the meantime, Erode WDG-3A arrived on Pf-2 with tthe 56712 PGTN-TPJ pass and took all the daily commuters
Came into the room with the newspaper and went through it. With a silent entry, 22638 arrived on PF-5, delayed by 2 hrs at 6:50AM. 56712 waited patiently on Pf-2 as 22638 took a precedence over it and left after a 5 minute halt.
As time ticked 7, i went to have bath and refresh myself. The bathroom was quite dirty with slight leaking taps. The geyser was removed and solar waterheater installed but geyser switch still stayed.Finished my bath and beyond the sound of water could hear the announcement going for 16343 Amritha to arrive on Pf-1. As i came out of the bathroom, peeped from the window to find the rake entering, the loco missed.
In the meantime dad also got ready and we went for breakfast as announcement went for expected arrival time of 12626 now at 9:30AM. The train had crossed Erode at 6:50AM as per NTES. Went out to have breakfast and came back to the room at 8AM to collect the luggage and leave to the bus stand. In the meantime, a ERS WDM-3A moved out in reverse direction with the 16343 to Palghat Town station
As we entered the room to take the luggage, announcement went for the incoming 22610 Mangalore intercity. Erode WDM 3A pulled in onto Pf-3 and took of the remaining daily commuters towards MAQ. We vacated the room and took an auto towards the busstand for continuing our trip
