Railways to start prelim work on Ujjain-Fatehabad route
The Railways will begin earthwork for the Ujjain-Fatehabad gauge conversion project. Railways officials said that the earthwork is estimated to cost Rs 4 crore will take about 18 months to complete.
Officials said this 22km long section is part of a larger gauge conversion project of Indore-Fatehabad-Ujjain rail section, the estimated cost of which is Rs 120 crore. "Conversion of this whole section will reduce rail connectivity distance by around 400 km and this project is expected to be completed in 2018," said a spokesman

with Ratlam division of the western railways.
The existing meter gauge rail lines on this 22 km section will be replaced with a broad gauge rail line. The earthwork will include soil exploration and a survey to determine soil types with a view to identify its suitability to design the foundation for the rail lines," said an official. He added that the earthwork will also help avoid troublesome spots, unstable hill sides and swampy and rock areas.
The Railways has already completed the Indore-Fatehabad section and work for the remaining 22km section between Ujjain and Fatehabad is now set to begin.
The Railways had closed this 134-year old meter gauge rail section between Fatehabad-Ujjain and Fatehabad-Indore in February, 2014.
The conversion of this rail section will reduce travel time by around half an hour. It will also reduce travel distance by around 20 km. It takes more than two hours for a train to travel from Indore to Ujjain. After the MG section is converted into BG, trains will take only one and a half hour to travel from Ujjain to Indore.
