Malnad express was a train from the 80's and early 90's. The Bangalore-Talguppa express (6583/84) was known as Malnad express in the MG days.
Once the Banglaore-Hubli route was converted to BG, a new Bangalore-Shimoga BG passenger (283A/284A) was introduced on a similar timetable as the Malnad express. This passenger used to run combined with the Bangalore-Hubli/Hospet passenger between Bangalore and Birur. In July 2000, the Shimoga portion of this passenger was delinked from the main passenger and made a separate train and now runs as the 16227/28 express.
