The court was hearing a petition filed by the union challenging the notification bringing BMRCL under the Essential Services Maintenance Act.
The State government on Tuesday submitted before the Karnataka High Court details of tripartite meetings held with the management and the employees of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to resolve issues related to salary, promotion, and facilities to be provided to BMRCL employees.
Justice A.S. Bopanna, before whom the copies of the meetings were submitted, has adjourned further hearing till June 27, as the counsel for the BMRCL Employees’ Union
sought time to verify the particulars of the proceedings submitted to the court and make his submissions.
The court had asked the State government to hold meetings to amicably resolve the issues between employees and the management. The court was hearing a petition filed by the union challenging the notification bringing BMRCL under the Essential Services Maintenance Act.
In one of the tripartite meetings, chaired by the chief secretary, the management and employees had accepted suggestions made by Chief Secretary Ratna Prabha to resolve certain issues with some modification on either side.
Assurance and advise
The chief secretary, while assuring the employees that the government is ready to resolve their genuine demands in a phased manner, had advised them to consider the financial conditions of BMRCL as their own as the company, which commenced operations only two years ago, is running under loss. She had pointed out that employees of other public sector undertakings are paid based on the performance of the company.
She had told young employee of BMRCL that they are fortunate to get a ‘secure’ job in Namma Metro when thousands of unemployed graduates and post-graduates are earning meagre salaries outside. She had also advised employees not to resort to strikes as they are all public servants serving essential services meant for the general public.
It has been stated in the proceedings that the meeting ended with an assurance that employees would withdraw the strike notice.
