Reached delhi today (27-02-2012) via this train and it was hauled by WAP-4 from end to end and arrived 1 hr late at the ndls stn. i believe if it had been hauled by WAP-5/7 the loco would have tried covering the time since wap-5/7 are more powerful than the WAP-4's. Does it make sense?
And also the train reached MGS late by good 35-40 mins thus it had all the time in the world to cover that lost time.

true, but when it comes to trains like rajdhani's, durontos and shatabdi esp on super fast routes(ndls-hwh, ndls-mum, ndls-bpl) wap 5 and 7 are obvious choices. And i also noticed it never touched the likes of 130's and 140's. I know wap 5 and 7 just touch these marks but they do ensure that they do touch such speeds but wap-4 today never looked like even close to it.
Check this one.

No, I personally doesn't agree with it that, WAP-4 are incapable of making up lost time.
I myself had an nice experience of WAP-4 from Howrah shed (in those days it was hauled by), the train was 12869 HOWRAH SUP EXP, It was late about 2.5 Hrs at Tata Nagar.Jn around 17:30 Hrs with thundering speed over 100 KMPH with old ICF coaches that support 110KMPH, overtaking BARBIL HWH JANSHATABDI EXP at Rakha Mines reached Kharagpur at 19:10 Hrs, then blazing past SER's EMU reached Santragachi at 20:28Hrs, and finally Howrah at 20:50Hrs after waiting for some signal between Tikiapara and GT Road...

WAP-7's are ideal for trains with jam-packed scheduled trains
that have too many halts yet have to move fast, better example is HOWRAH KALKA MAIL
