The name Mangalore is the Anglicized version, since in Kannada it is called Mangalooru. It translates as Mangala-Ooru or Mangala's town. Lakshadweep, the smallest union territory of India, is a group of islands 200 to 300 km off the coast of Kerala in the Laccadive Sea. Lakshadweep comes from Lakshadweepa, which literally means one hundred thousand (laksha) islands (dweepa) in Sanskrit.
