The intention was to provide connection to Kolkata pax as well via Dankuni. So if diverted via Khana it will lose pax from Kolkata. Vivek will now provide 3 daily connectivity: Assam to Kerala, Kolkata to Kerala and Kolkata to Assam. This is the optimal route.
