I would like to ask a question regarding the braking of EMD locomotives or in general any diesel electric locomotive. Whenever a train is coming to a halt the loco usually comes down from the higher notches down to the 2nd and then finally the 1st notch.
But many times i have seen locos are coming to halt in Notch 4 itself. Why do the LPs do this ?
Like in the following videos.

Although i am not Technical but try. Notch down reduce energy loss even when Loco can be Neutral at any Notch when braking!!
Roadside Yellow/Red Signals need quick acceleration (past Clearance) & need Loco Air Reservoir replenish quickly & Feed (FP) Pressure lost in Braking (BP). High Notch balances Reservoir Air Pressure while regenerative braking systems minimize energy loss!!
We brake/release (Car) till reach speed for safe final braking at destination. LP can brake/release repeatedly by replenishing Reservoir (need high Notch) and usually Loco is fully Notched Down at Safe Stop Distance at

LP trying to accelerate on higher notch when Loco struggle to pull (maybe break not fully released while Loco keep replenishing FP during braking & Idle at high notch) & quickly move to Lower Notch past Starter (guess Reservoir reached optimum Pressure)!!

So technically a loco can be put to halt at any notch but to avoid energy loss they notch down ?
But in above cases to maintain air reservoir pressure they are braking in Notch 4 if I'm right ?

That's what i understood with my limited scope. Video display Roadside Stations with EMD where Passenger stopped a minute. Freight were not to park long!! EMD got regenerative braking system to minimize energy loss & in Passenger video we see Notch pulled down past Starter (as High Notch managed to pull Rake with no need to replenish Reservoir afterwards)!!
You may loose more energy trying to pull Rake with Break Pad semi released and Optimum Reservoir Pressure let you quickly push Pad off wheels & avoid Red Burn Wheels/Break Pad (Guess)!!
