Chidambaram(Thillai) is the panchabhuta sthla of lord Shiva in space aspect ie Akasa. The deity is Nataraja or the Cosmic Dancer. The temple is unique in the face that it is a Vaishnava Divya Desam and Shaiva Sthalam. From one point in the temple, Lord Vishnu and Lord Nataraja can be seen simultaneously. Durin Arati, the priests remove the curtain behind the idol to reveal the Chidamba Rahasyam. The priests of this temple are Dikshitars and once there were 2999 of them and collectively called Thillai Moovairam.(thillai 3000).
