Hindupur in the Anantapuram district of AP is the closest railhead to Lepakshi in the Anantapuram District of AP, which is a very famous historical pilgrimage and also to Kodikonda-veerapuram Painted Stark Siberian Migratory Birds Sanctuary.. Lepakshi is 16 kms from Hindupr and is accessible by frequent APSRTC buses towards Lepakshi and onward to Kodikonda-Veerapuram for another 20 kms.
Lepakshi is famous for 500 year old paintings, Monolithic asia's biggest Nandi, Hanging pillers, Virupaksha temple atop the hill built in the period of SriKrishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara Empire. The sculptures carved
by none otherthan the history famous, "Amarashilpi Jakkana". Pics 1,2,3,4&5. The Name Lepakshi = Le Pakshi = Getup Bird. The story of this name dates back to Ramayana when Rama on his persuit of Seetha Finds Jatayu the bird king, on this hillock and blesses him with heaven and says, "Le-Pakshi".
Veerapuram, A Village in Anatapuram District near Kodikonda NH7 border checkpost, sees Siberian Migratory Painted Storks every year during Siberian winters. Pic 6&7.
