Clarification on the death of an on - duty Ticket Examiner of Train No. 22601 at Manthralayam Road Station; And an appeal to Passengers
It has been reported in a section of Media that Shri B.Sanjeeva Rao, on-duty Ticket Examiner in Train No.22601 Chennai – Shirdi Express, was beaten to death by some of the passengers as there was no water in the coach.
It is to clarify that Shri Sanjeeva Rao (age,57 Yrs) Ticket Examiner of Guntakal Division, joined

duty as Train Conductor on this train at Dharmavaram Junction at 19:33hrs on 11-12-2013. on arrival at Guntakal Junction at 22:18 hrs, some passengers complained about non-availability of water in the B-2, a III A/C coach. The Train Conductor has responded immediately and conveyed the message over phone to the officials concerned. Guntakal Junction is not a nominated Station for coach watering for this train and there is no provision also for watering of trains coming from Dharmavaram side at Guntakal. Hence, Railway officials made arrangements for coach watering of this train at Manthralayam Road Station, which is the next watering point for trains in that route. The staff were in readiness and have immediately filled water when the train arrived Manthralayam Road Station at 23:27 hrs of 11/12/2013.
However, in the meanwhile some of the passengers got down from the train approached on-duty station master/Manthralayam Road station and complained regarding non-availability of water. During the course of discussion, the on-duty train conductor Shri Sanjeeva Rao, also entered into the station master’s room. It is learnt that he was sitting on a chair and he suddenly collapsed in the course of heated argument. Immediately, a Doctor was called by the station master and on examination the Doctor declared Shri Sanjeeva Rao dead.
on receipt of this message, senior Railway and Police officials from Guntakal and Raichur rushed to Manthralayam Road Station. The body was shifted to Government General Hospital, Adoni for post-mortem and was handed over to his family members after post-mortem. The exact cause of the death can be ascertained only from the post-mortem report. Railway Administration will provide the requisite assistance to the family of Shri Sanjeeva Rao to take care of their welfare. 4 passengers were detained by the Government Railway Police, Adoni, who registered a case on this incident and launched investigation.
In this connection, Railways make an appeal to the passengers not to put undue pressure or behave harshly towards the on-board Railway staff especially the Ticket Examiners. While the passengers can bring to the notice of the Ticket Examiner any deficiency in service, it may be noted that the Ticket Examiners also travel in the train only and they convey the message on any problem to the officials concerned for necessary action at enroute stations. Railways being responsive to the needs of the passengers, makes the best possible efforts to attend to the complaints of the passengers in an appropriate manner at the nearest suitable station.
SCR has set up an SMS – based passenger grievance redressal system also to attend to passenger complaints. Passengers can send an SMS on 8121281212 on any grievance or service problem during travel which will be attended to immediately.
