My trip to Shimla is mainly a KLK-SML-KLK railfanning trip(My stay in Shimla is going to be not more than 4 hours long!). And yes, I suffer from motion sickness, hence I would like to avoid road journeys, especially in ghat sections.
I went to a PRS counter to try it out yesterday. It IS possible to book a through ticket from SML to ASR via KLK and UMB as mentioned in my original post. As I thought, one would be charged at FC fare(with SF charges, though only 12903 happens to be a superfast) for the entire distance since FC happens to be the higher class among the two. The difference in guages makes no difference to this calculation.
I eventually chose not to go for the through ticket from SML-ASR. I had, by then, decided to do SML-KLK by 2S(which costs Rs. 35), so I booked a through ticket(3A class) only from KLK to ASR via UMB. The enquiry I made at the PRS counter about the SML-ASR through ticket was purely to clarify my above doubt. :)
