Three Lok Sabha members have written to Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge demanding a fresh survey for a rail line between Nilambur in Malappuram district of Kerala and Nanjagud in Mysore district of Karnataka, through the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu.If implemented, the project will cut the travel distance between Kanyakumari and New Delhi by 450 km and between Thiruvananthapuram and Bangalore by 250 km and benefit more than two crore people, said A. Raja of the Nilgiris; M.I. Shanavas of Wayanad; and R. Dhruva Narayana of Chamraj Nagar. While Mr. Raja is a DMK member, the other two are Congress members. They wanted Mr. Kharge to immediately convene a meeting with the governments of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka to finalise the project and include it in the coming Railway budget, so that work could start simultaneously in the three States.A shorter route between Sulthan Bathery and Nilambur Road, through Devala, Glanrock, would...
shorten the distance by 82 km and help save Rs. 2,000 crore, the MPs said. “This line could be made economically viable and socially desirable.”The line, they said, would ease traffic congestion on National Highways 212 and 67, and three major State Highways connecting Wayanad and the Nilgiris, and Mysore and Bangalore.
