hello everyone, hope everyone's doing fine :)
before I yet again disappear for tens of weeks there is small electrification update i wish to make
So, few days back I was doing my usual Mumbai-Alibag-Mumbai weekend journey, when shortly after leaving Goa highway (NH 66) and turning on to NH 166A I spotted a weird grey looking pole obliquely standing in soil. That, as you might have guessed were new electric poles which were being erected. the next time I traveled that route I ws alert and wanted to see if there
is any sign of electrification from PNVL end, but there isn't. Poles start appearing only after the line to TVSG (TVSG is the correct station code, not Thal as mentioned here) diverges out, but once they start appearing they are visible till quite some distance, until the track turns away. I believe the electrification has been started from TVSG end and will keep on progressing outward towards Panvel via Pen. This obviously needs cofirmation, and i infact know of a place not much far from the industry the line ends at which will allow me to see unhindered for almost 5-ish Kms close to the end of TVSG, but currently it is difficult for me to reach there.
why is this important?
Because the e-fication from TVSG is actually a part of the TVSG-PEN-PNVL e-fication project. It was mentioned first in the 2015-16 pinkbook, and the beginning and in fact rapid progress of the work currently indicates that the work may be complete by the end of the year. the next phase, involving PEN-ROHA electrification can then start which would allow for, if railways plans to, run some MEMU on the new slots created on the recently doubled line on PNVL-ROHA route.
what exactly is this line?
the lines where poles are currently visible is not a part of mainline, but is a rather long 'private siding' that is connected to three firms:
1)RCF Ltd, where the line ends.
2)PPDP (PNP Dharamtar port), not marked on atlas. I have indicated it in image attached though, on OSM
3)JSWD (JSW Dolvi), marked wrongly on atlas, the line diverges shortly after the private siding diverges from mainline. the poles, when i last saw them, stop short of the place where the diverging happens.
#atlasmonitors take note please and add the corrections, and update the line to electrification in progress from single diesel line

Decision was taken at a Zonal Railway Users’ Consultative Committee meeting in Hubballi
The South Western Railway (SWR) on Tuesday decided to recommend to the Railway Board to divert Yeshwantpur-Karwar tri-weekly day express and Bengaluru-Karwar/Kannur daily night express via the newly opened Bengaluru-Hassan via Shravanabelagola line.
SWR took this decision at the meeting of Zonal Railway Users’ Consultative Committee (ZRUCC) in Hubballi, attended by among others MPs Pralhad Joshi, and Karadi Sanganna and General Manager Ashok Kumar Gupta.
day train, 16515/516, presently runs via Arsikere and the night train 16523/524, 16517/518, run via Mysuru. SWR had earlier sought opinion from ZRUCC members regarding the diversion on the ground that the diversion would drastically reduce the travel time. ZRUCC member Vinay Kumar from Kadur told The Hindu that diverting the day train would deprive train facility to and from the coast for travellers from Hubballi and sought a connecting train from Arsikere to Hassan. He also said the Mysuru Chamber of Commerce and Industry opposed the move to divert the night express train as it was the only connecting train for people from Ramanagaram, Mandya, and Mysuru to the coast.
According to SWR’s Chief Public Relations Officer E. Vijaya, the users were convinced about providing connecting trains from Arsikere and Mysuru to Hassan to get into Karwar day and night trains. Finally, it was decided to send proposals to the Railway Board to allow SWR to reroute the two trains, she said. The approval might come within a month, Ms. Vijaya added.
With the diversion of tri-weekly day train, six-day a week day train service would be available between Bengaluru and the coast, Ms. Vijaya said. Already, train No. 16575/576, Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Junction Kudla Express is operational on the newly commissioned shorter route, she said.
Mr. Vinay Kumar also said South Western Railway rejected the demand to reintroduce Mangaluru-Miraj Mahalakshmi Express via Arsikere and Hubballi, which was running before gauge conversion of Mangaluru-Hassan line. The Zone cited restrictions on number of trains on the ghat section as the reason.
SWR also decided to cancel Hubballi-Sholapur Intercity Express for poor patronage.

there is a passenger between those two cities already, in fact that particular passenger train is the reason why this never got any serious patronage.

Yes, but that rake can be utilized... Like a passenger or ICE train between GTL-SUR via GDG. There is demand for trains in HPT-BAY belt to both GTL and BJP.

It was With good patronage When it is running between gadag-solapur it use to depart from GDG at 14.00 which was good Timing for ppl to go towards bijapur/solapur but due to some gameplan by Railway officials after SUR GM Retired Who was against extension as per rules of CR they extended this one to UBL and now made it less patronage train so that its running on its last days. This can be run From SUR to GTL via GDG HPT as karthik bro told which can be good train.

रांची राजधानी एक्सप्रेस के बेपटरी होने के पीछे रेलवे की बड़ी लापरवाही सामने आईहै। रेलकर्मियों को इस बात की जानकारी थी कि पटरी के साथ पहिए को सहारा देने वाली चेक रेल टूटी हुई है। इसके बाजवूद हजारों यात्रियों की जिंदगी दांव पर लगाकर इस टूटी पटरी पर कई ट्रेनों को गुजरने दिया गया। चालक ने ट्रेन ले जाने से इनकार किया था : गुरुवार सुबह लगभग 10:40 बजे पहले हावड़ा राजधानी नई शिवाजी ब्रिज स्टेशन के करीब पहुंची। ट्रेन जब नई दिल्ली रेलवे स्टेशन के लिए मुड़ने लगी तो ट्रेन चालक को गाड़ी में झटका महसूस हुआ। उसने तुरंत गाड़ी रोक दी और पटरी की जांच की। उसने देखा की चेक रेल टूटी पड़ी थी। उसने गाड़ी को आगे ले जाने से इनकार कर दिया। सभी को सूचना भी दे दी कि पटरी टूटी हुई है। अधिकारियों ने लिखित में इजाजत दी : पटरी की मरम्मत के लिए जिम्मेदार अधिकारियों...
ने मौके पर पहुंचकर माना कि चेक रेल टूटी है। साथ ही ड्राइवर को लिखकर दिया कि इस टूटी चेक रेल के बावजूद यदि वह पांच किलोमीटर प्रति घंटा की गति से गाड़ी ले जाएगा तो गाड़ी पटरी से नहीं उतरेगी। लिखित में इजाजत मिलने के बाद ड्राइवर गाड़ी को पांच किलोमीटर प्रति घंटा की गति से नई दिल्ली रेलवे स्टेशन ले गया। इसके बावजूद पटरी की मरम्मत नहीं की गई और टूटी चेक रेल से तीन और गाड़ियों को गुजरने दिया गया। रांची राजधानी इस रूट से गुजरने वाली चौथी ट्रेन थी। सुबह 11: 54 बजे जब इस रेलगाड़ी का इंजन जैसे ही टूटी चेक रेल से गुजरा तो पहिए पटरी से उतर गए।

ट्रेनें प्रभावित शिवाजी ब्रिज पर मरम्मत के चलते जिन रेलगाड़ियों को रद्द किया गया है उनमें 23 जोड़ी मेल एक्सप्रेस
चेक रेल मुख्य रूप से लेबल क्रासिंग,डायमंड क्रासिंग या जहां रेलगाड़ी एक पटरी से बदल कर दूसरी पटरी पर जाती है, वहां लगाया जाता है। इसे मुख्य पटरी के साथ लगाया जाता है। जब गाड़ी मुड़ती है तो चेक रेल पहिए को पटरी से उतरने नहीं देता है।

Suresh Prabhu should have also increased number of grade C staff so that ground level monitoring could improve, but he didn't.
after 2013 RRB has pretty much stopped conducting its entrance exam for garde C staff, and with thousands of vacancies pending, ground level monitoring is deeply affected. If wage bills owing to 6th and 7th CPC were issue then he could have opted for a similar structure like that of banks, whose salaries are decided by a different board, thereby keeping wage bills in control, or going for increased mechanization. Neither of which happened, so a part of blame does fall on his shoulders.
forget IR is heavily centralized, with most decision making power concentrated at top. He and the RB have a huge share in the blame for what has happened

* IRly is a black box as other do not know much about Rly operation. So called 2 lac vacancies have to be studied in detail in current situation in order to ascertain that they really exist? The number of safety and inspection posts were fixed in an era when there were wooden sleepers and two rail joints every 13 meter of rail track.
* Spikes (Nails) used to came out of wooden very often due to huge impact of moving train, especially of large wheeled steam locomotives, and had to be frequently hammed back to original position. These have been replaced by pendrol clips over concrete sleepers which remain in place and do not require any hammering. So efforts required
is reduced by several times.
* Today there are long welded rails & continuously welded rails with two rail joints in every 1-10 kms! Number of joints which need to be tightened and maintained have reduced to bare minimum. So the job of maintenance has gone down drastically but the number of post have not been reduced.
* A large number of lower staff is working as domestic help at the houses of superiors as has been reported. That practice need to be stopped and the track monitoring have to be done with mechanical and automatic means like track recording cars, drones etc. With modernisation grade D,C matric pass 12th pass type vacancies shall shrink and vacancies for professionally skilled staff to operate & maintain the modern machines shall increase.
* Not implementing pay commission (7th) is not an easy task and no RM has courage to do it!! For that IR has to be converted into PSU or corporatised.
* It does not sound good but is true that- IR shall have to delegate unskilled jobs to more efficient private sector, else it will remain in bad financial condition and continue to lose its market share to inefficient and highly polluting road & air modes. Its manpower cost of IR is already sky high at about 70% of total revenue generation and further increase is highly detrimental to its finances.
