in some of the section of Konkan Railway, almost every train is average speed touching 110-120 kmph, howcome its possible on single track. if you check surathkal to Udupi is covered by most train 26-30 minutes, whereas the distance is 59km.
is the distance showing is wrong. also between Ratnagiri and sawantvadi road most train are having average speed of 95kmph.

Distance is inflated by some 30-40% to extract more money from passengers.

As it is always said the distance in Konkan Railways is inflated. However, we can experience certain trains running at 100 kmph+ in certain sections and an avg. of 80 kmph+ thruout the journey. A few clarifications needs to be addrtessed so that everything gets clear.
Q.1. Hw cum is this possible when avg speed after converting to normal distance scale falls below 60 kmph? (Eg. try avg speed of 12051/12052 Janshatabdi while travelling)
Q.2. What is the approx distance between Mumbai & Madgaon (by normal distance scale)?
Q.3.

Approx distance between Madgaon & Mumbai CST is 530 kms.
The Konkan railway project was built with huge costs & so for the early recovery of the incurred cost, KR was allowed to inflate the distance to be able to charge more from passengers.

The total route length of Konkan Railways is 760 kms from Mumbai to Mangalore. How come the distance between Mumbai CST & Madgaon can come up to 742 kms?
It's only because of inflated route kms used by Konkan railways for charging the passengers more & recover the huge costs associated with building this extensive network.

This still remains a mystery whether the cost has been recovered or not and when they will resort to normal distance usage for determining passenger fares & other things related to distance.

Actual Kms from LTT to MADGOAN is 572.
LTT to Roha 130
Roha to MAO 442
.
Initially it was decided after 10 years of operation (2008) KRC will be handed over to
...
IR but the govt: decided to continue the status quo again for soem more time as there were not able to take a decision on KR because of various pressures from states, politics, and regions. Kerala was demanding a seperatre zone including some parts of KRC and kerala state, likewise Karnataka too with KRC a seperate zone HQ at Mangalore while some others from Karnataka suggesting to merge KRC with South Western railway, Goa and Maharashtra all claiming their right over KRC. So the Indian Govt: decided to continue the status quo for another 10 years or so (not sure about the period of time). given below is the part of the agreement between KRC and IR
.
Commencement and duration of agreement.
This agreement shall have effect from the first of January nineteen hundred and ninety eight except where a different date is specified and shall remain in force till it has been revised or till the Corporation ceases to operate as an entity separate from Indian Railways.
For the first time in India funds for the project were raised without touching the government coffers. The authorized capital of Rs.800 crore was pooled together by the railways and the four beneficiary states. This was leveraged by means of public bonds to the extent of Rs.2, 250 crore. These bonds carried attractive rates of return, tax breaks and guaranteed repayment. The project also employed the least number of people in its management at its peak a mere 2400, in all.
.
Ten years hence, KR portrays the picture of an efficient and surging public sector enterprise. It posted an operating surplus of Rs 107.18 crore for the first nine months of the current fiscal, while the total earnings have touched Rs 326.76 crore for the same period. The total earnings for the entire year are expected to be Rs 468 crore.
.
With two Special Economic Zones coming up near Navi Mumbai, a massive petrochemical SEZ near Mangalore and a new international airport at Navi Mumbai, the Konkan region is expected to see some hectic action on the economic front. To cater to the growing needs of people, Konkan Railway is planning to build more stations on its route. It is already served by 60 stations.
.
Another revenue generaator for KRC is RORO (Roll on Roll off) truck-on-train service on January 26. This innovative service has established that railways and roadways can exist in a symbiotic relationship. KRC has earned more than Rs 90 crore from RORO service in nine years.

This is not a problem. To apply normal fare table but to charge excessive on the logic of extraordinary infrastructure, the IR has inflated the distance and charging distance inflated to 6 times (21 Kms. x 6 = 126).
Similarly, an addition of about 40% is there on Konkan Railways.

The actual average speed of this train is not 87 kmph. The actual route kms in Konkan railways have been inflated to charge more from passengers for early recovery of huge costs incurred for building this railway line. The distance between CSTM & MAO according to the time-table is 742 kms but the actual distance is somewhere around 540 kms. The whole Konkan route upto Manglaore is 760 kms long. So, this ain't the fastest jan shatabdi. Actual average speed is around 62 kmph.
