Most of the jobs of the Railway persons are peculier to the Railway Organisation. The skills required to be acquired cannot be obtained outside the organization. These are divided into few categories which are known as Group A services.

Railway Traffic Service (IRTS)
2. Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS)
3. Indian Railway Pesonnel Service (IRPS)
4. Indian Railway Protection Force (RPF)
5. Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME)
6. Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE)
7. Indian Railways Service of Signal Engineers (IRSSE)
8. Indian Railways Store Service (IRSS)
9. Indian Railways Medical Service (IRMS)
Recruiment to these services is done by the UPSC every year. The selection of the first four services is done as a part of Civil Service Examination popularly known as IAS and Allied services. Selection for the rest of the services is held as part of the Engineering Services Examination for selecting officers for Central Engineering Services.
