Auto Upgradation
-------------------------
Scheme:
1. Is exercised for those passengers only who have opted for upgradation while booking (complaints are there that it was done without exercising (226509) but it sure that the System had already fed into information of this option having been opted for) .
2. Is
...
applicable to all the issuing gateways - Counter, E or I.
3. Is applicable to all the status whether CNF, RAC or W/Listed before chart preparation (or at the time of issuance of original booking) and whether Tatkal or General.
4. A complete PNR is upgraded and not less than all passengers out of a PNR.
5. Next higher class is only to which GENERALLY upgraded (exceptions are there which have previosuly been reported at our site where next to next higher class was allotted). One can refer to the upgradation list of Yesvantpur-Howrah Duronto Express/12246 of 25.08.2011 where 41 passengers are upgraded. At Sr. No. 11, one can find that a passenger of 3AC has been upgraded to 1A (Blog Entry No. 226690).
6. Is automated on random logic & hence no preference can be set (earlier booked, Tatkal booked, initially confirmed or so).
7. There is no compulsion that Upgradation will be applied by IR for any train irrespective of some berths being carried vacant in a class.
8. There is no charge for Auto-upgradation and the passengers enjoy the upper class journey just free of cost though in upper class, there may be an additional costing in addition to empty haulage like bed rolls (when upgraded from SL to 3AC or so) and Pantry costing (like 2AC to 1AC in Rajdhani / Duronto or ACCH to ExCH in Shatabdi trains.
Precautions:
1. Sr.Citizens, Ladies who are prefering Lower Berths and are expecting (or know) that they are likely to get LBs, should not allow upgradation if they need LBs only.
2. Sleeper class passengers who do no like Air Conditioning, should not allow upgradation.
3. Beware that good allocation in the original class may become bad in the higher class (a reverse is also possible).
Fact sheet:
Attached is the upgraded Passenger List for 12956 (Jaipur – Mumbai Central via Sawaimadhopur – Ratlam – Vadodara) of 24.08.2011 which copy pasted for summary viewing and screen Shots pasted for original effect.
1. Upgradaing is only one class upward (though sometime back we had received notice from some members that it had been beyond one class up also).
2. Sr. no. 1, 8 etc. were waitlisted but have got upgraded.
3. Sr. no. 13, 15 etc. were under RAC but have got upgraded.
4. Sr. Nos. 2 to 5 were enjoying a good allotment of original berths (B-4> 17, 18, 19 & 20; 3rd cubical LB, MB, UB and LB) but on upgrading they have been bifurcated to A-1> 41, 42, 43 & 44; SL, SU, next cubical UB, opposite LB).
5. Sr. Nos. 25-26 and 37-38 had all Lower berths inside same cubicals (S-2> 1 & 4 and S-9>65 & 68 respectively) which seems to be for Sr. Citizens or Ladies (Just prsuming, pls.) but have been thrown away at SL and SU berths (B-5> 47 & 48 and B-5> 15 & 16 respectively; one side lower and one side upper each).
6. Sr. Nos. 45 & 46 have badly been treated. Enjoying berths 1 & 4 (both lower, same and first cubical) in S-8 are picked up and dropped off at both the upper berthe (19 & 22) in coach B-3.

Q. What is the up gradation scheme? What are its salient features?
Ans. With a view to optimize the utilization of available accommodation in train, a scheme to upgrade full fare paying passengers to the next higher class against the available vacant accommodation has been introduced in all Mail/Express trains having sleeping accommodation w.e.f. 24-02-2006. The salient features of the scheme are given below:-
The scheme is applicable to only full fare paying passengers, free of charge.
It
...

is applicable only in those trains having sleeping accommodation,
The passengers for up gradation will be selected on random basis by the System at the time of preparation of reservation charts,
Up gradation of passengers will be done as under:-
Sleeper to 3 AC or First Class
3 AC to 2 AC
2 AC to 1 AC
Up gradation will not be done for block booking transactions,
If there is no waiting list, no up gradation will take place,
If a passenger, who has been upgraded, cancels his ticket, cancellation charges of the original class only will be payable.

Auto upgradation scheme is applicable only to passengers having booked tickets on full fare.
Concession ticket/free pass holders including senior citizens traveling on concession will not be upgraded.
Up gradation will not be done for block booking transactions.
Up gradation will be automatically done by PRS at the time of charting.
The
...
Train Conductors/Ticket Examiners will have no authority to upgrade any passenger under this scheme on the train.
However, the present system of upgradation on collection of full fare difference by booking, reservation or checking staff will continue as usual.
If a passenger, who has been upgraded, cancels his ticket, cancellation charges of the original class only will be payable.
Up gradation of passengers will be done in one class above only e.g. from sleeper to 3AC/FC, 3AC to 2AC and 2AC to 1AC.
Only waitlisted passengers will be provided confirmed seats.
The remaining vacant berths will be transferred for booking on the current counters as per the existing practice.
Thus, if there is no waiting list on a train, no upgradation will take place.
The berths of confirmed passengers, who have been upgraded to the higher class, will be allotted to the RAC/WL passengers of that class.
If there are still some berths vacant, the vacant berths will be allotted to confirmed passengers of the next lower class.
All passengers in one PNR (maximum 6) will be upgraded together or none of them will be upgraded in case of non-availability of enough berths for upgradation. Passengers will be upgraded without asking for their choice e.g. SL to AC/FC coach, cabin berth to side berth, lower berth to upper berth, cabin level compact accommodation to coach level compact accommodation.
However, if any passenger exercises NO option for upgradation in the requisition form at the time of booking, his/her PNR will not be considered by PRS for upgradation.
Party consisting of both full fare paying and confessional passengers will be not upgraded, to avoid splitting.
Original PNR of upgraded passengers will remain unchanged and all information from PRS, IVRS etc., will be provided when enquiry is made with the original PNR. Since there will be changes in the coach number and berth numbers of passengers, who had earlier been allotted confirmed seats, if they are upgraded, passengers will need to get into the habit of checking their final coach numbers and berth numbers before occupying the berths.
The chart of the original class of passengers will have indication at the bottom of the chart giving original berth numbers, which have been upgraded.
The final charts of the upgraded class will include the names of upgraded passengers against their allotted upgraded coach and berth number and will have an indication denoting their upgraded status.
There will also be a separate sheet on the lines of the waiting list chart giving old status and new status for upgraded passengers.

It is applicabe for all confirmed tickets. If your Ticket is in WL but confirmed at the time of charting, u r also eligible for upgradation. Please note that, there needs to be vacancy in the higher class
It is randomly decided by the system.
U may be upgarded upto two classes in a train.

believe, it is random. No logic for Upgradation.
Even if there is a logic, it wont be available to general public. In that case, if we were to know the logic, we would go for that method. It is beeter to be surprised with Upgradation.

Upgradation is done when all passengers aren't being able to be accommodated in the train. It is free of cost. Upgradation is done upto two higher classes in the train (E.g. if the train doesn't have 3A, then SL passenger may be upgraded to 2A and even 1A) It is done at the time of charting. All passengers in a ticket are considered for upgradation together. CNF/RAC/WL passengers (all of them) are eligible for it, though some claim that WL passengers have got higher priority for Upgradation.

Earlier, it was like, if vacancy exists in SL as well as 3AC., , then upgradation was not done from SL - 3AC.
SL had to be in waiting for upgradations to take place(Vacancy in 3AC exists).
I guess, now the scenario is like, even if seats are available in SL and 3AC, passengers are upgraded from SL - 3AC.

SCHEME TO UPGRADE FULL FARE PAYING WAITLISTED PASSENGERS TO
NEXT HIGHER CLASS TO COVER INITIALLY TWO PAIRS OF TRAINS ON EXPERIMENTAL BASIS

COMES INTO EFFECT FROM JANUARY 26, 2006
In a major move that is expected not only to benefit waitlisted passengers but also benefit the railways in terms of filling up vacant accommodation in various trains, the railways have introduced a scheme, on an experimental basis, to upgrade full fare paying waiting list passengers to the next higher class against the available vacant accommodation, with effect from 26th January 2006. Initially, the scheme will be implemented only on two pairs of trains viz. 2951/2952 Mumbai Central-New Delhi Rajdhani Express and 2953/2954 Mumbai Central-Hazrat Nizamuddin August Kranti Express. The important features of the scheme are: The scheme will initially be applicable on a few selected trains with reserved sleeping accommodation as a pilot project. It will not be offered in trains with only sitting accommodation e.g. 2S, CC and EC classes. The scheme is applicable only to passengers having booked tickets on full fare.Concession ticket/free pass holders including senior citizens traveling on concession will not be upgraded. Up gradation will not be done for block booking transactions. Up gradation will be automatically done by PRS at the time of charting. IN case if my tkt is upgraded it will b 1st A/c. By upgrading a passeger to a higher class, don't u think that it is a loss for railways. Suppose I book a tkt in sleeper class in this train which

What is the point in upgrading a passenger ?

Passengers are upgraded to next upper class only. In very rare cases it is seen that it is upgraded to next 2 upper classes. Regarding the loss, instead of running the train with empty upper class berth, IR gives upgradation free so that they can pull in 2 waitlisted tkt holders on to an RAC seat for they get the fare twice. So they are not at full loss.

I will try to put some data together this weekend if the train has berths avbl.

Computer picks any PNR randomly which meets the conditions. Suppose there is only one vacant berth in 3AC and WL in Sleeper, then one SL class passenger will be upgraded. Now system will check for only those PNRs which have opted for upgradation and have only a single passenger. If a PNR has 2 passengers, either both are upgraded or none. One passenger cannot be upgraded while the other passenger remains in same class.

Hemant,
Why you are in so hurry to answer. The user has asked the question what is the normal procedure for upgrading my ticket and you have given ugradation is done automatically. (which is for Auto upgrade and also if user choose this option, that also randomly and not every one) . The question it self is not correct he should have clearly mention upgrading class and not ticket and also he must have given the detail like on board or before on board.
