jan shatabdi is different category of trains providing-
1.faster point to point inter city connections
2.had catering facility when introduced, now removed
3.no telescopic fare facility unlike intercity trains which helps you save money
are a bit more comfortable than intercity
5.price is quite high when compared to intercity trains
6.fully reserved train. No unreserved coaches. Though tickets are issued from unreserved counters if seats remain empty after charting

Jan Shatabdi are Super fast trains whereas it is not mandatory for intercities. Jan Shatabdi are premier trains, so given clear path mostly (higher priority). Besides Jan Shatabdi do not have unreserved coaches.

Jan Shatabdi can be boarded with reserved tickets only. If seats are vacant, UTS counters will give ticket for the available number of seats. In intercity express, tickets are issued without any conditions (whether seats are vacant or not as the intercity trains have unreserved coaches).
