There are 2 types of tickets that can be booked thru irctc.
i-ticket is like a normal ticket which you get in any PRS. Once you book, they will courier it to the address given by you. The passengers will not need to carry any ID proof (except for tatkal for which all passengers from 11th Feb will need to carry ID proof). This ticket needs to be canceled at PRS if need be and the money is credict to the account which was used to book tickets.

out which can be used to travel. One passenger should carry ID proof(all for tatkal). This ticket has to be canceled online. Once chart is done you will need to find a TDR to cancel. If e-ticket remains WL after chart is prepared it is automtically canceled by irctc.

delivered to the customer at his desired address through courier
You can book an i ticket only if there is a 2-day gap between the booking date and the travel date. This is to allow time for the ticket to be couriered to you. The ticket will be couriered to either one of the addresses that you have specified while you registered on irctc website, or to any other address you specify at the time of booking.

i-ticket means ticket booked via internet but you wanted the ticket to be printed in the normal ticket form and couriered to your address.

source reference::www.irctc.co.in/beta_htmls/Deliverypopup.html)
i-ticket means you book ticket through internet but you can not print but you get preprinted ticket as is normally available
on PRS counters.
i-ticket is delivered in select cities through

IR authorised agents.
if your city is not on list of irctc, you can not book i-ticket, or if you want i-ticket, you need some one in the city where
ticket will be delivered, and recouriered to you by someone. Thus you pay double courier charges, one normal IR charges and
second time extra.
as the I ticket is to be delivered by courier, as decided by IRCTC, selected cities only have this facility. (link
reference:www.irctc.co.in/beta_htmls/Deliverypopup.html)
Further the quote from the webpage says:
1-IMPORTANT:LOCATION AND CONDITION FOR COURIER DELIVERY :
2:The following cities(Pincodes) are covered for door delivery for I-Ticket (E-Ticket can be booked from any city
irrespective of the delivery limitations)
3-Please ensure --two clear days-- before date of journey for Home Delivery at
the following cities of the state. ( list of states/cities is exhaustive. and user needs to go through it, on the weblink
provided above )
4:Please ensure --three clear days-- before date of journey for Home Delivery at
the following cities of the state. (( list of states/cities is exhaustive. and user needs to go through it, on the weblink
provided above ) )
This I tried to clarify myself and update my own information as well friends. any corrections are welcome.
