Indian Railways targets at least 50% of freight traffic by 2030 Indian Railways likely to surpass revised freight target for FY19 span.p-content div[id^="div-gpt"]{line-height:0;font-size:0} The Indian Railways may soon be open for more investment from private players and may allow them to operate passenger trains on low-congestion and tourist routes. According to sources,...
the national transporter may also consider bringing in premium trains, including the Rajdhanis and Shatabdis, under this plan, for which a tender is likely to be floated within four months. On an experimental basis, two trains may be allotted to Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), covering important tourism destinations or connecting major cities, in less congested routes. Various stakeholders, including the Unions are likely to be consulted before the move. In its strategy for New India released in 2018, Niti Aayog too had advocated for more private participation in the sector, including ownership of locomotives and rolling stock, to modernising railway stations. The planning body in its suggestions for railways said the national transporter should consider opening up the ownership and operations of freight terminals and ownership of locomotives and rolling stock to the private sector under a transparent, neutral (non-railway) and fair regulatory mechanism. It had cited that the move will improve performance and investment. Other key areas where private participation is considered include coach and locomotive manufacturing and repairs. Similarly, major building construction players are currently on fray to get a share of station redevelopment contracts by the Railways. As per an Icra note, the overall size of the station redevelopment programme is quite large, involving over 500 stations with an estimated cost of Rs 1.1 trillion and the same is likely to be spread over a longer time horizon (more than five years). Over the medium term (1-3 years), about 50 stations are likely to be taken up for redevelopment with estimated cost between Rs 10,000-20,000 crore, depending on the extent of commercial development around these stations. Icra also notes that IRSDC, the nodal agency for the railway station development programme, has recently allocated planning and feasibility work for 39 stations to five CPSEs (NPCC, Engineering Projects, MECON, RITES, Bridges & Roof Co). This is likely to pave the way for fast-tracking their development. This apart, NBCC was earlier entrusted with 10 railway stations of which it has already awarded EPC work for three stations and is likely to take up the remaining stations depending on their financial viability. Last year, the Railways had also opened up the doors for private sector investment in rail cars that can move multiple commodities, which does not require any special approval, through general purpose wagon scheme, in which the fleet will be completely owned by private parties. Major players like Adani Group, JSW Cement, Jindal Steel and Power, Tata Steel, Rashmi Cement and Orissa Metaliks had shown their interest on that. There are other schemes like Liberalised Wagon Investment Scheme, Wagon Leasing Scheme, Automobile Freight Train Operator scheme and Special Freight Train Operator Scheme, in which private parties were involved, but in such schemes, the fleet assigned were part of Indian Railways only.

Travelling on an Indian Railways train? Soon you will be able to share feedback with railway staff, including GMs, railway managers. Indian Railways plans to take a major step to improve the services. As travelling by trains is considered to be an opportunity to gain first-hand insight on the actual conditions, Indian Railways is eying “moments of truth” with passengers and customers to gain knowledge that will help improve facilities on trains. Railway officials have been asked to travel in all classes including
the general class coaches.
A circular was recently issued by the Chairman of Railway Board and Ex-Officio Principal Secretary, Vinod Kumar Yadav, directing all General Managers, Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) and unit heads of the national transporter to personally ensure that the officials working under them frequently travel by train in the course of their official tours.
These officials should inspect the conditions of the train coaches as well as interact widely with passengers. The circular further stated that the inspection note of the officials must invariably contain a report on the conditions of such facilities and quality of services on trains including bio-toilets, catering, among other services.
In the circular, Yadav also stated that he expects a feedback from all the General Managers that these instructions have been passed on to all railway officials. It further said that the MCDOs (Monthly Confidential Demi Official) shall henceforth contain a paragraph on key points gathered from the inspection reports of the officials. On the basis of the crucial points gathered from the officials, corrective measures will be carried out to improve and enhance the railway services, the circular added.
With all the recent developments, there is no doubt that Indian Railways is on a spree to improve services and facilities across its network. From upgradation of railway infrastructure to the introduction of various passenger-friendly amenities, Piyush Goyal-chaired Railway Ministry is taking several noteworthy measures in a bid to give world-class railway facilities to passengers.

Telangana has been chosen as the place for the trial run. According to railway officials, the locomotive will be put on trials on the Vikarabad – Parli section under South Central Railways (SCR) and it will be the most powerful among those in use on Indian tracks. The WDG-6G is now ready to undergo the Confirmatory Oscillograph Car Run trials and join the fleet of locomotives of the Indian Railways.“The WDG-6G Diesel Locomotive is based on GE’s evolution series and is fitted with a 16-cylinder V-16 evolution series engine, a four-stroke fully turbocharged and inter-cooled machine. It also has the latest technology and marks a new high in features related to the driver’s cab,” an SCR...
spokesperson said. The enhanced operator and cab amenities include the provision of heating, ventilating and air-conditioning along with the hot plate, heated windshields and display screens for the loco pilot’s convenience. Officials informed that the consolidated control architecture system has also been provided with features such as trip optimiser, loco-vision and cab signalling. The auto engine start/stop is integrated with the auxiliary power unit giving a quality boost to the maintenance of the loco. Remote monitoring and diagnostics have also been enabled for continuous fleet health monitoring. In a statement released by SCR, it has been mentioned that the safety standards of the loco are enhanced by cab frontal collision system designed to withstand tough crashes. Packaging of electrical hardware and equipment has been done to enable easy maintenance. The lightweight bogie frame also needs minimal maintenance. This new breed of WDG-6G Diesel Locomotives is set to play a significant role in the plans of Indian Railways, with the carrying capacity of a freight train rake to significantly increase on account of the hauling strength of the locomotive. It will thereby enhance sectional capacities in terms of increased train services and result in operational efficiency in terms of fuel consumption.
