Indian Railways is planning to use an artificial intelligence-based robot to monitor and record the health of the trains to avert the potential loss of life caused due to human error. The robot will reportedly record videos and take pictures of the under-gears of trains and update the engineers who can swing into action before it is too late.
Developed at the mechanical branch of Central Railway’s Nagpur division, Under-gear Surveillance Through Artificial Intelligence Assisted Droid or “USTAAD” is equipped with high-definition cameras to monitor parts of the railway coaches and transmit the information to authorities in real-time over  WiFi.
cameras can also be rotated in any direction as per the command thus helping the engineers to see and examine cramped or narrow spaces between under-gear parts which otherwise would have been hard to access.
Sunil Udasi, the spokesperson for Central Railway told a leading newswire, “USTAAD captures video and still photographs of the under-gear parts of the coaches in real time and transmits them over WiFi. The engineers can see these videos on a big screen as well as record them. The camera of the robot can be rotated in any direction as per command given by the engineers.”
“It can also zoom on the spot in case of any doubt. It is equipped with LED floodlight and able to capture the videos in low light as well as in dark mode. By use of this robot the chances of a mistake and any deficiency overlooked by human eye can be eliminated thus reducing chances of human error,” he added.
In the past, the Indian railway has come under the scanner due to increasing death tolls of passengers in train collisions. In 2017, former Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu stepped down from his position following the consequent derailment of two trains just days apart.
However, the ministry has made efforts to revamp the railway systems ever since. Recently the Ministry unveiled AskDisha, an AI-based system to handle the customer queries.

Metro services were affected in Kolkata, and many passengers injured, after a fire broke out in an AC coach on Thursday. Sources said around 1,500 passengers panicked after smoke filled coaches. Some broke windows to jump out into the tunnel between Rabindra Sadan and Maidan metro station. No casualty was reported, said police.
Around 42 passengers were rushed to SSKM Hospital while five were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Passengers claimed they kept calling the helpline number, but the rescue team only reached much later.
“A fire broke out in Rabindra
Sadan-Maidan metro at around 5.10 pm.The fire was controlled by our staff using fire hydrants. Fire services and Kolkata Police disaster management groups were also involved. The passengers of the affected metro were evacuated safely,” said Metro CPRO Indrani Banerjee.
The smoke was first detected at around 4.50 pm when the train was approaching Maidan station, sources said, adding the power switched was turned off while the fire was brought under control.“We were stuck inside for more than 40 minutes. We could see flames and feel the smoke. We kept calling on the helpline but no one came to the rescue. Some even jumped off the coach by breaking the windows,” said Aritri Dey, a passenger. A fellow commuter, Malabika Dey, also claimed that rescue operations took time.
A PTI report said Kolkata Metro officials denied the delay. Metro authorities said that after the fire was put out and the cooling process was completed, the emergency gate was opened and evacuation of passengers started. A statement by the authorities also said that a probe had been ordered into the incident, and that the women’s helpline and security helpline had answered a total of 50 calls over the issue.
“Many had injuries and cut marks, a few of them were having breathing problems. Five have been admitted, the rest will be discharged after medication,” said a source at SSKM Hospital.

The iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has a first since its birth 137 years ago – an evening daily toy train service hauled by a steam engine.
But the evening narrow-gauge train, introduced on Monday for tourists, does not go the whole hog.
Instead of the 88 km between New Jalpaiguri at 113.8 metres above mean sea level to Darjeeling at 2075.6 metres, the train will cover 18 km between Siliguri Junction and Rongtong at the 427.9 metres.
train leaves Siliguri at 3 p.m. to reach Rongtong at 4.20 pm with a 10-minute stop at Sukna station. The train returns from Rongtong after a 25-minute halt for refreshment and engine reversal,” Pranav Jyoti Sharma, spokesperson of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), said.

Three lions died on Monday night after they were hit by a goods train near the Gir forest in Gujarat’s Amreli district.
The train headed for Pipavav port hit three of a group of six lions that were walking along the railway track.
“We will probe weather the train was moving at a high speed. We will also probe weather the forest staff or lion trackers failed to discharge their duties. Stringent action will be taken against the guilty,” said D.T. Vasavada, Chief Conservator of Forest, Junagadh Wildlife circle.
forest, abode of Asiatic lions, has been witnessing one tragedy after another since September this year. So far, 35 lions have been lost to Canine Distemper Virus and Protozoa infections, besides territorial fights among the big cats.
