The delay in land acquisition by the state government seems to have cast a shadow on the ambitious Tumakuru-Chitradurga-Davangere railway line project that was announced almost a decade ago.
Even as Tumakuru is making strides by being the industrial node of Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor and being selected as a sister city of Denmark’s Aalborg on Thursday, the Union Railway ministry on Thursday clarified that it cannot execute any work until the state completes land acquisition for the project.
Drawing the attention of the Union Railway Ministry, a parliamentarian from Chitradurga A Narayanaswamy sought
the status of the project. In his reply, Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said that unless the state hands over the land required for the project, the ministry cannot carry out work.
“Total revenue land required for the project is 2,246.06 acres. Of this, the Karnataka government has handed over only 135.66 acres till date. The state has to expedite land acquisition of the remaining 2,110.40-acres of revenue land besides diverting 34.66 acres forest land,” Goyal said in his statement.
Acknowledging the delay in land acquisition, G S Basavaraju, a parliamentarian from Tumakuru told DH that the delay has already been brought to the notice of Chief Minister Yediyurappa.
“Of the required land for the project, only 6 to 8% has been acquired so far. Ever since it was brought to the notice of the CM, he has directed the chief secretary to regularly hold meetings and resolve issues to expedite the process. Hopefully, the issue will be resolved in a few months.”
Sources in Tumakuru also revealed that the difference in compensation for land adjoining Vasanthanarasapura Industrial Area and the land acquired for the railway project has prompted many farmers to approach the court resulting in the delay.
“Farmers who lost land for the industrial area were paid up to Rs 40 lakh per acre. But for the railway line, farmers got only up to Rs 20 lakh. Several farmers have approached the court and cases are pending at various stages. Soon, an amicable solution will be arrived at and all farmers will be convinced to part with the land,” Basavaraju said.
The railway line, spanning 191 km, was announced in 2010-11 on a cost-sharing basis with the state government. The state government had agreed to provide land free of cost and offered to bear 50% of the cost.
“The state government handed over 135.66 acres of land for Urakere-Thimmarayanahalli section (12 km) to railways in 2018,” Goyal revealed in his statement in Lok Sabha.
The proposed rail project was expected to provide seamless connectivity between central Karnataka districts and Bengaluru, with the present line running through other districts and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. The new line will boost industrial growth along the corridor.
With Tumakuru incorporated as a special node in the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor, the rail line was thought as a game-changer with plans of using it as a freight corridor.

🔹Tumakuru - Rayadurgam and Tumakuru - Chitradurga - Davanagere are separate projects
🔹Tumakuru - Rayadurgam passes through Urukere, Koratagere, Madhugiri, Madakasira, Pavagada and Kalyanadurgam (parallel to SH) and joins Rayadurgam - Ballari line
🔹Tumakuru - Chitradurga - Davanagere line passes through Urukere, Siraa, Hiriyur, Chitradurga, Bharmasagara (parallel to NH 48) and joins Davanagere - Hubballi line
🔹Yes, if Tumakuru - Rayadurgam line is commissioned
then it will become shortest route for Vijayapura - Bagalkot - Gadag - Koppal - Hosapete - Ballari section to reach Bengaluru and passenger/express trains can run in this shortest route

There will be Private Bus Lobby also behind delays in some key routes + Interest of the Politicians in providing basic infra to public.
Other Countries execute such prime projects on priority at less time. More you delay more the cost.

Somehow I feel Tk-Rdg line will get complete first compared to Tk-Dvg line. Because LA and line is almost ready in AP. Whereas LA between Tk-Cta is not going good, needs more active interest by elected leaders.

I also think TK - RDG line will get completed first. LA for TK - CTA - DVG line must be speeded up. Both these lines will become game changer once commissioned

Right, Initially thought after Tk-Rdg commissioning in future, Tk-Cta-Dvg will also get commissioned in a year or two. But now it looks like difference of year will be ~5yrs.

CHITRADURGA: When neighbouring Davanagere and Tumakuru have grown at an enormous pace, why not Chitradurga, questions A Narayanaswamy, also known as Anekal Narayanaswamy. He is now going about setting this anomaly right.
Drawing on his skills acquired as MLA and Social Welfare Minister, Narayanaswamy is busy meeting people, listening to their problems and trying to find a solution. In his very first meeting, he took the officials of Upper Bhadra Project to task and directed them to ensure  speedy completion of canal work and release water to fill the tanks of Chitradurga and Tumakuru districts.
priorities are clear: water, irrigation, education, transportation and setting up an industrial corridor across the district. The good rapport he enjoys with the state and central BJP leadership may help him get good projects to the district.
Narayanaswamy started his career in 1986 as a City Municipal Councillor of Anekal. He won the byelection to the state Assemby in 1997 from the constituency and has held on to his seat until he was defeated by Congress’ B Shivanna in 2013. He was defeated in 2018 again. After a brief political lull, Narayanaswamy has made a comeback in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections by defeating coalition candidate B N Chandrappa by a margin of 80,178 votes.
His main mission has been to bring clean water to the district through the Upper Bhadra Project before 2020. For years and years, fluoride pollution has ruined the groundwater in the district. The chemical causes people’s teeth to discolour. In a way,he is trying to bring the smiles of the people of the district back.
Another task which holds no less importance on his list of priorities is speeding up the works of the Tumakuru-Davanagere railway line. He wants a East-West Railway corridor set up in order to link Visakhapatnam and Krishnapatnam ports with the ports of Karwar, Malpe and Mangaluru. He wantsto make Chitradurga an educational hub. In order to give employment in the district a boost, Swamy wants to ensure that the work on the Industrial Corridor is completed on time. He will also apprise Union ministers of the project’s status.
