The Centre on Tuesday approved Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 2A (Central Silk Board Junction to K.R. Puram) and Phase 2B (K.R. Puram to Airport via Hebbal Junction) of total length 58.19 km.

taken in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Implementation of the project will provide the much needed additional public transport infrastructure to Bengaluru, Goyal said after the cabinet meeting.
The project will streamline the urban transportation system in Bengaluru, which is stressed due to intensive developments, increase in the number of private vehicles and heavy construction in the city, putting stress on travel infrastructure and industrial activities. This will provide the people a safe, secure, reliable and comfortable public transport, a statement from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said.

at major railway stations over Bengaluru Division, the rates of platform tickets have been enhanced from Rs 10 to Rs 50 at KSR Bengaluru, Yesvantpur, Bengaluru Cantonment and Krishnarajapuram," it said.
The South Western Railway's Bengaluru division cited the surge in Covid-19 cases in second wave amid the starting of train services in a phased manner as the reason behind the increase in the ticket rates.

BENGALURU: While South Western Railway (SWR) is planning to operate new trains and shift some existing ones to the new coaching terminal at Byappanahalli railway station, it may not be used much due to poor accessibility.
Activists say passengers may use the nearby KR Puram railway station instead to board or alight from trains stopping there.
Once overlooked, KR Puram — located at the junction of Old Madras Road and Outer Ring Road — has gained more patronage after the IT boom.

trains to places like Bangarpet, Chennai, Ernakulam, Howrah and Patna halt here. However, SWR has failed to upgrade it.
Karnataka Railway Vedike founder member KN Krishna Prasad said: “Passengers travelling to places like Chennai/Katpadi and Bangarpet may use KR Puram station. But it doesn’t have adequate facilities.”
Many passengers say the station, which has four platforms, has been neglected for a long time.
A reality check by TOI revealed that water was not available in most taps while toilet facility has been provided only at platform 4.
A narrow foot overbridge connects platforms 1 and 4. There are no escalators or lifts.
Passengers, including senior citizens and differently abled, have to climb stairs to get from one end to another through the FOB.
Roofing is also provided only at platform 4.
Apart from this, encroachments like illegal shops have sprung up in and around the station premises.
“Work on the FOB connecting the railway station and the proposed Metro station should be expedited. BMTC is dropping passengers on the roadside as the junction width has shrunk after construction of the hanging bridge," Prasad said.
"The FOB connecting platforms is narrow like those at Mumbai's suburban stations and may even cause stampedes during peak hours when people carry luggage,” he added.
Rajiv S, a resident of Marathahalli, said: “This station is chaotic, especially during peak hours. It’s high time it was redeveloped. There is no autorickshaw prepaid counter here and some auto drivers often prevent cabbies from entering the station premises to pick up or drop passengers.”
Ranjini D, a passenger said: “There is no proper lighting or water facility at this station. There is only one toilet for all platforms and it is poorly maintained. Most of the display boards are dysfunctional. Waiting for trains is a problem, especially during rain, due to lack of roofing.”
Bengaluru divisional railway manager Ashok Kumar Sharma said there are no immediate plans to redevelop the station.
“We are in the process of increasing the platform width. Many people who are unable to access the new terminal could use this station for trains passing through this section”.

The allocation will fast track the ongoing work, which is scheduled to be completed in 3 yearsThe doubling of the two important railway lines in the City has received a shot in the arm with the Ministry of Railways allocating around Rs 148 crore in the Pink Book, which was released on Tuesday. The allocation will fast track the ongoing work, scheduled to complete in three years. While Rs 77.50 crore has been allocated towards doubling 48-km Baiyappanahalli - Hosur line, similar work on the 21-7-km Yeshvanthpur - Channasandra stretch gets Rs 70 crore. As per the agreement, the State Government will release the equal sum of work to the Karnataka Railway Infrastructure Development Enterprise (K-RIDE), which is tasked with the work.Another major allocation made in the Pink Book is the quadrupling of 23-km Bangalore - KR Puram - Whitefield stretch. The Centre has provided a sum of Rs 28 crore. It’s learnt...

that a separate allocation has been made towards the suburban rail project but the details were not immediately available.Other than doubling works, the Pink Book does not make many allocations to works such as level crossing works and automatic block signalling that was considered crucial for increasing the frequency of train movements.Another disappointment is the missing of allocations for the construction of the terminal at Bengaluru Cantonment as well as in Yeswanthpur where a second terminal was proposed.

Over a month after raising the platform ticket fare at three railway stations, the South Western Railway has done the same at 11 other train stations in the Bengaluru division, starting Wednesday.
Platform tickets are KR Puram, Bangarpet, Tumakuru, Hosur, Dharmapuri, Kengeri, Mandya, Hindupur, Penukonda, Yelahanka, Banaswadi, Carmelaram and Whitefield railway stations will cost Rs 50 from October 21 to November 10. The hike is to ensure non-travellers do not enter stations in the wake of Covid-19, the SWR said.
