The Centre on Wednesday approved the Bengaluru suburban rail project, estimated to cost around Rs 19,000 crore, and fulfilled a long-pending demand of the IT city.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the 148-km-long project, which is aimed at decongesting Bengaluru, sources in the government told DH.
However, due to the model code of conduct in force for the Assembly byelections in Karnataka, the government deferred its announcement.
When

asked to elaborate on the project at the weekly Cabinet press briefing, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said that due to the code of conduct, he can’t say anything on this issue.
According to the revised DPR, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) will be set up to implement the project and both the Railway Ministry and state government will have equity in it.
The Union government would provide 20% of the equity in the project and facilitate external financial assistance of up to 60% of the project cost. The Karnataka government will have to share the remaining 20% equity.
The suburban rail network will have four corridors: KSR Bengaluru City-Devanahalli, Byappanahalli-Chikkabanavara, Kengeri-Cantonment-Whitefield and Heelalige-Rajanukunte.
The revised project proposes 57 suburban railway stations covering a distance of 148.17 km. Besides dropping at least 24 stations from the original report, the revised DPR has also cut down the number of elevated stations from 31 to 22.
The suburban railway is likely to be fully operational around 2026 since approximately seven years are required for land acquisition and construction.
The suburban rail stations will integrate with at least 10 metro stations including Yeshwantpur, Kengeri, Cantonment, Whitefield, K R Puram, Baiyappanhalli, Jnanabharathi and Nayandahalli. The fare structure will be similar to that of the Metro rail, said sources.
With the suburban rail network providing seamless connectivity to all towns surrounding Bengaluru, it is expected that once it is complete, it would greatly help decongest Bengaluru,  which is facing severe traffic snarls, said an official in the Indian Railways.

If it is not going to stop at Bangalore east and cantonment, why it is going via these stations? From YNK, it can take YPR route and reach SBC by 7 AM. Atleast one hour journey time is saved.

Train Tag: Udyan COVID-19 Special Express/01301 added by Next train from SWR~/48335
The first train from Covid-19 hotspot Mumbai chugged into the KSR Bengaluru railway station on Tuesday, bringing with it about 600 people and plenty of chaos and confusion.
After passengers disembarked from the Udyan Express, there were angry scenes as some of them unhappy with quarantine rules argued with officials.
There was drama on the road as well.

officials, who were at the scene, said a handful of passengers even got down from a bus that was taking them to quarantine.
“The passengers had opted for a free quarantine facility,” explained a source in the BBMP. “They got into the BMTC bus but soon started protesting at the high bus fare. When the driver stopped the bus, they got down and said they would walk instead. The driver also started moving the bus. Officials had a tough time convincing everyone to fall in line even as we processed more than 500 people.”
Some passengers who arrived from Mumbai protested at the tariff of hotels identified as quarantine facilities.
Gaps in data on the origin stations of passengers lingered till late in the evening, as the railways and the BBMP gave diverging figures.
South Western Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer E Vijaya said 644 passengers, including 52 children, got down in Bengaluru on Tuesday morning. She said the number included several people who got on to the train at stations within Karnataka to reach Bengaluru.
But BBMP officials said 556 people arrived from Mumbai.
“Since Maharashtra is a high-risk state, we had taken precautions. We took swab samples of 114 persons whose temperature was slightly above normal. All the 556 persons have been sent for institutional quarantine,” a senior official said.
However, sources in the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation said they carried only about 200-250 people. “Only 10 buses were used for transporting passengers to paid/institutional quarantine. We might have carried a maximum of 200 to 250 people. We can’t comment on what happened to the rest,” an official said.
To a question, BBMP Chief Health Officer (Public Health) Dr B K Vijayendra said jurisdictional revenue officials were yet to provide details of the passengers. Joint Commissioner (west) Chidananda did not answer phones or text messages.
While reports claimed that about 15 passengers tried to escape, railway police said nobody tried to flee.
“Two passengers had got down at Bangalore East Railway Station. They were immediately sent to KSR Station. At Majestic, some passengers were told to get off by the driver and they got down from the bus. They boarded another bus and went to the quarantine centre,” a Railway Police officer said.

The Union Budget 202 has finally brought a cheer among the residents of Bengaluru after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced of ₹18600 crore for the development of Bengaluru rail suburban transport project.
The metro city will be getting a 148 km long suburban rail transport network and it will have the fares based on the metro model. The central government would provide 20% of equity and facilitate external assistance up to 60% of the project cost.

metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Secunderabad. The state government has submitted a revised detailed project report (DPR) that proposes around 55-odd suburban railway stations.
Thanking Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Karnataka CM BS Yeddiyurappa hailed her decision to approve Bengaluru suburban rail whose funding up to 40% will be shared by the state and the Centre, with the balance coming from external assistance.
"This will boost the infrastructure facilities in Bengaluru which has turned out to be favourite investment destination for the MNCs. This will help us to eliminate traffic congestion in this investment friendly city," said Yeddiyurappa.
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said that money will be provided for the suburban railway project in the state Budget and it is expected to be completed in three years.
The trains with all air-conditioned coaches will operate from 5 am till midnight and will benefit lakhs of commuters travelling within Bengaluru and surrounding areas, the chief minister added.
Speaking to ANI on the suburban railway project, the Chief Minister said, "We are going to provide money in the Budget. We want to complete it in three years. We will start work as early as possible."
The state government has proposed to execute the work through the Rail lnfrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Ltd (K-RIDE) and a special purpose vehicle has to be formed to implement the project, stated a PTI report.
The RITES submitted a pre-feasibility report in November 2017 titled as "Bengaluru Elevated Rail Corridor - Pre-Feasibility Report". The report studied three options to explore alternative means of enhancing commuter rail capacity of Bengaluru City with minimum land acquisition.
According to media reports, RITES(Rail India Technical and Economic Service) have prepared a detailed project report(DPR) which it submitted to Indian Railways.
RITES have identified four corridors and they are: KSR Bengaluru city–Devanahalli, Chikkabanavara–Yeshwantpur–Byappanahalli, Heelalige -Yelahanka–Rajanukunte and Kengeri–KSR Bengaluru–White field.
According to a latest report, Bengaluru is the world’s most traffic congested city and the introduction of the suburban rail network will help in providing the residents an alternative to reach their destinations on time
“Bengaluru takes the top spot this year with drivers in the southern Indian city expecting to spend an average of 71% extra travel time stuck in traffic," TomTom said in the ninth edition of its annual Traffic Index.

In a boon to commuters, the railways has now opened its doors to two-wheeler and bicycle-sharing service providers at 15 stations.
Last week, the first bike-sharing service was inaugurated by South Western Railway general manager Ajay Kumar Singh at Yelahanka railway station. This comes as a big relief for commuters who were forced to use their own vehicles for first and last-mile connectivity.
Bounce, the operator providing the service, has announced plans to set up shop at 13 stations in the city, including Bellandur, Banaswadi, Hoodi Halt, Byappanahalli, Krishnarajapuram, Bengaluru East and Bengaluru

Cantonment. Providing such services even in areas like Malleswaram will help those travelling by suburban trains from residential areas.
Meanwhile, Railways has received a positive response for its tender seeking expression of interest from private operators for bicycle-sharing services. Senior officials said they were in discussion with Yulu and a decision is likely in the next few days.
“The EoI is for 15 stations. This involves looking into details like the identification of the parking space for service providers. We are in discussions with Yulu and will come up with a decision within a matter of a few days,” a senior official said.
Bounce has given parking space at two entrances in the 13 stations, to pick up or drop off Bounce bikes. Officials said similar arrangements will be made for bicycle-sharing systems as well.
Parking of private vehicles at railway stations, especially for long-duration, has turned costly ever since the railways hiked the fee in September 2017. While the two-wheeler parking fee has gone up from Rs 20 per day to Rs 50, those parking cars can be charged up to Rs 300, depending on the number of hours.
