Naresh, a government employee living in Anakapalle, and Achari, a teacher living in Vizianagaram, who commute to the city daily for work, find the lack of local trains a curse for commuters.
“Though there are trains from Anakapalle to Visakhapatnam, they do not match the actual demand. I have to board either 57271 BZA- Rayagada Passenger or 57255 Kakinada - Vizag EMU, which are already packed to capacity with hardly any space to get in,” says Naresh.
Mr. Achari travels from Vizianagaram to Visakhapatnam every day. He boards 78531 Vizianagaram-Visakhapatnam DEMU, which is

packed to capacity with hardly any space to stand comfortably leave alone sitting in the train.
Both Naresh and Achari feel that there should be MEMU s (Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit) between Tuni/Anakapalle to Vizianagaram via Visakhapatnam after every 1 hour and a few services can be extended up to Annavaram one side (as it would meet the requirement of pilgrims travelling to Sri Satyanarayana Swamy temple) and Srikakulam on other side (as it would be useful to those going to Arasavalli and Srikurmam temples).
The introduction of the local trains would help in reducing the load on the National Highway and minimising road accidents. This is not all, the middle class and the poor will be saved the hassle of paying three or four times the fare for travel in buses.

The prestigious and strategic Kashmir rail link project may well see a second landmark this year with the expected beginning of trial runs on the Udhampur-Katra section in December. With this, the last hurdle that remains before Kashmir is connected with the rest of the country by train would be the Katra-Banihal link. In June, the first commercial run of a train had happened across the Pir Panjal range through the 11km-long Banihal-Qazigund tunnel, connecting the Kashmir and Jammu divisions of the state. A major engineering feat, this rail tunnel had reduced the 35 km distance between Banihal and Qazigund by half. Building the latest Katra link has been no less challenging, with its seven tunnels and 30 bridges. Though scheduled to be completed in 2008, the delay is understandable, given the water seepages and other surprises that the hill terrain presents.

of the world’s largest railway networks comprising 1.15 lakh km of track and 7,500 stations, Indian Railway is indeed the “Lifeline of the Nation” that it is often called, moving the country’s economy as much as its people. The ‘lifeline’ now is tantalizingly close to serving what is geographically one of the most isolated and politically explosive regions — Kashmir. The importance of the service is most visible every time a new section is commissioned, with hordes of people lining up for a ride out of sheer excitement. Trains on the stretch within the valley run full, but the cleanliness on them and the disciplined conduct of the passengers demonstrates the pride they take in the service.
Sensing the economic significance of the rail link for the people, militants too have not opposed it. While there have been incidents during the construction, there has been no serious attempt to disrupt the running of the trains. With only the last stage now remaining before a single ticket takes you to Srinagar, Kashmir may well be set for not only a new era of economic development but also a fresh connecting of minds.

On Sunday, the display board at the Visakhapatnam Railway Station, which informed that the Yesvantpur-Howrah Express would be ‘Indefinitely Late’, sums up the state of transportation in the rain- battered north coastal Andhra region.
At several places on the stretch between Rajahmundry and Ichchapuram, railway tracks were inundated with one to three feet deep flood water leading to cancellation of almost all passenger and over six express trains.
The trains that were operational were delayed by not less than two hours and a few were delayed by over 14 hours as authorities stopped

them to avoid untoward incidents.
The Prashanthi Express was stopped at Tadepalligudem for over three hours, the Visakhapatnam-bound Godavari Express was halted at Pithapuram, and Machilipatnam-Visakhapatnam passenger was stopped at Bikkavolu in East Godavari district. Falaknuma was stopped at Annavaram.
The information on the display board was updated every hour and so were the details about the delay. When asked about it, officials said that they could not be accurate about timings in situations like this as the train might be stopped till it is not considered safe to go ahead.
Vexed by such vague information, a few passengers rushed to the station superintendent’s office in the hope of getting additional information, but in vain. The station superintendent’s office was bustling with activity as passengers and officials were already in the cabin.
Swami, was waiting at the station for three hours to board a train to Vijayawada.
“I have a personal emergency and need to reach Vijayawada by night. As I got to know that even buses are not running, I will wait here till night to try my luck,” he said.
Equally interrupted was the road transportation in this region as the torrential rain either battered the roads or inundated them. The road connectivity between Andhra and Odisha has been completely suspended as the roads were washed away.
Most of the buses, both long distance and short distance, were cancelled till evening due to submerged roads.
An engineering student, Ganesh, was hoping to reach home before Diwali. “All trains to Warangal got cancelled. There is no information whether they would be operational tomorrow. I am unsure about whether buses will be able to wade through the flood water.” Ganesh too had decided to wait at the railway station till night.
Like Ganesh and Swami, scores of other passengers, stationed themselves in front of the display boards with the hope of reading the message that the train they have been waiting for has arrived.
Railway authorities tried to handle the situation with an Emergency Service Centre, an information desk to answer queries regarding the rescheduling or cancellation of trains.
However, officials at the desk were surrounded by a mob of people grappling with each other. With innumerable queries spanning from, “Will the train to Bhubaneswar be operational tomorrow?” to “Is there any alternative route to reach Warangal?” the officials either ended up nodding or not answering.
