The look and feel of railway stations across the country hasn’t transformed much. But the next time you step inside any major railway station, don’t forget to sign up for the free Wi-Fi internet provided by Google and Railwire. You will be left amazed by the speed and reliability of the connection. While free Wi-Fi internet is a must have for international airports, travellers can now enjoy the same experience at over 100 railway stations pan India.
Google and Railwire aim to bring this free Wi-Fi facility to 400 stations across the country. “RailTel shall be providing high speed end-to-end network connectivity on Fiber, while Google shall be providing the Radio Access Network along with technology support. Once implemented this shall

be one of the largest public Wi-Fi project in the world,” according to the Railtel website.
The Indian Railways had earlier piloted a project to bring Wi-Fi connectivity to Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto categories of trains for free in select routes. While it is still in the process of identifying a suitable cost effective solution to introduce reliable Wi-Fi connectivity inside trains, the Google Railwire Free Wi-Fi project lays a solid foundation to make train travel more productive and attractive.
For a recent trip to Kolkata, I had opted to travel in the Sealdah-Rajdhani Express from New Delhi. While traveling, I had connected to the Google Railwire Free Wi-Fi in eight stations- New Delhi, Kanpur, Mughal Sarai, Gaya, Dhanbad, Asansol, Sealdah and of course, at Howrah station. The duration of Wi-Fi connection was obviously very short during train stoppages but here is an overall review of the project.
How to connect?
It’s very simple. Open Wi-Fi on your smartphone and select Railwire. A pop-up Chrome window will open asking you to enter your mobile number to receive an OTP code. Enter a working mobile number to get the OTP. Once you get the OTP via SMS, enter the same on the website to access free internet. Note that you can enter any working mobile number to request for an OTP. And each time you sign-in, you will need a new OTP. Here is the complete list of stations offering the service.
Are there any limits?
As per records, the internet speed is 24 Mbps for the first half an hour and later drop to 1 Mbps. You can stay connected throughout the day. There is no restrictions to what content or website you can visit. You are totally free to do whatever you feel like. Sadly, recent news reports highlighted that users mostly surfed for porn videos using this free service. “Several non-commuters are found inside stations (in Mumbai) using the free WiFi to watch porn. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) drives them out, but they somehow manage to sneak in again,” said a railway official to HT recently. At Patna, porn websites were reportedly blocked to prevent misuse of the high-speed free Wi-Fi internet service.
The Wi-Fi service is built for viewing uninterrupted high definition video, download of movies, songs, games by the passengers at Railway station,” according to a statement.
The digital lifeline
After trying the free Google Railwire Wi-Fi service in eight stations, I can easily say that it is one of the most successful public Wi-Fi deployment in India. With footfall in millions each day, providing stable Internet connectivity to everyone and promising unlimited and unrestricted access to the Internet is a huge ask. This is a must needed relief for Digital India and paves the way ahead for other government organisations to provide Internet connectivity in future.
As far as the internet speeds are concerned, the Google Railwire project doesn’t disappoint. However, there are fluctuations in the connection speed. You can easily continue with your regular activities like browsing, WhatsApp, Facebook, light gaming etc but you cannot ignore the buffer time while playing HD videos on YouTube.
