The Western Railway (WR) has widened a Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at suburban Borivali station in a “record two months time”, a senior official claimed today. “Gone are the days when the various infrastructural projects of the Railways were often entangled in procedural hassles, thereby delaying the work and escalating the cost,” WR spokesperson Ravinder Bhakar said. “Now, the WR has proved that passenger safety is of utmost priority and it is evident by the completion of widening work of the FOB at Borivali station in record two months,” he added. After the September 29 stampede at the FOB linking suburban Elphinstone Road and Parel stations, the railways received flak from all quarters. “The extension of 12m wide FOB and widening by 3m at Borivali at a total cost of Rs 2.35 crore was sanctioned by General Manager on out of turn basis. year and the work began from November 19. “Our engineers have completed this task in a record time of two months and the FOB is set to be opened on January 20,” the spokesperson added.
He said this would benefit the commuters. Borivali station is one of the major stations of WR as several outstation trains halt there. It is also one of the terminus station for suburban trains.

Mumbai: It has been two weeks that Mumbai has seen AC local run on the railway tracks of Western line in Mumbai and the two weeks have been quite satisfying according to Western Railway. The local has seen 40,000 passengers in two weeks of running in the suburban system, recording an earning of almost Rs 15 lakh.
The local began operations on December 25, 2017. The train plied between Borivali to Churchgate initially. From January 1, 12 trips of the local were scheduled between Churchgate and Virar railway stations in a day. It does not ply on the weekends for maintenance purpose.
“We

have seen an upward trend in commuters travelling in the local. The number of commuters taking weekly and monthly passes has shown an increase. Commuters who are taking weekly passes largely form the regular office crowd . They may opt to take an AC train ride in case its timings clash with their regular local train ride,” said a senior official to Indian Express.
“From January 1, crucial railway stations like Virar, Bhayander that see large footfall have been added to the local ride. We will require time to analyse this in detail. Till now, commuters who hold first class passes have been demanding entry inside the AC local without additional cost. We are analysing these demands,” added a railway official.

Indian Railways continues to take steps based on new technology to facilitate execution of its various activities. It has now been decided to introduce modern Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Kiosk Machines for quick & easy printing of tickets booked through UTS App for mobile phones by suburban commuters.
Western Railway (Hqrs. Mumbai) becomes first railway zone to introduce this facility for its Mumbai suburban commuters of Western Railway. This new facility will make printing of tickets much simpler and quicker. Under this facility just by simply placing the screen of mobile phone displaying the SMS of the ticket booked through UTS Mobile App in the designated slot provided in the OCR Kiosk machine and the machine will simply read the SMS

and print ticket immediately.
In the first phase, 25 OCR Kiosks have been planned by Western Railway for installation, out of which 20 Kiosks have been installed and became functional w.e.f today i.e. 11th January, 2018 on five Mumbai Suburban Stations of Western Railway namely Churchgate (1 Kiosk), Dadar (6 Kiosks), Bandra (3 Kiosks), Andheri (5 Kiosks), and Borivali (5 Kiosks). In addition, installation of five more OCR Kiosks at Churchgate is under process and will be installed shortly.
The use of these Kiosks will facilitate the passengers to get print-out of tickets booked through UTS mobile app and also reduce the queues at booking counters/ATVM machines thereby promoting transactions through UTS mobile app. Presently, passengers have to feed their mobile number and booking ID received on their mobiles, in the ATVM machines to get their tickets printed or get it through UTS counter. This new facility of simply placing the screen displaying the SMS in the designated slot provided in the Kiosk will also reduce the time of printing of tickets as the machine will simply read the SMS and print tickets immediately.
