KOKRAJHAR, March 3: The All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) and Jonogostiya Aikya Moncha (JAM) on Monday observed 8 hours blockade at Fakiragram railway junction demanding security to different communities living in BTC region, rehabilitation of displaced people and to stop according Bodoland state. The blockade which began from 8 am was supposed to end at 4pm but it came to an end at around 1pm as the police and security forces resorted to open blankfire in the air to control the picketeers that went boisterous. The target of the blockade was mainly to oppose the formation of Bodoland state. The security forces resorted to lathicharge, blank fire and shelling tear gas to disperse the agitators during the railway blockade at Fakiragram in Kokrajhar. The Moncha opposed the setting up of an expert committee to study and examine the demand for Bodoland state to be carved out of Assam.
person, including five police personnel were injured in the process. According to sources, the incident happened after the agitators pelted stones at the security forces forcing the security forces to resort to lathicharge and blank fire to disperse the mob. The injured were taken to hospital for treatment. The incident was occurred in presence of Magistrate Babul Sahariya and Aditional SP Surajit Singh Paneswar of Kokrajhar. The district administration tried to maintain peace at the time of agitation. The blockade disrupted railway communication till 1 pm. Several long distant trains were stranded at various railway stations like Dn Rajdhani at New Bongaigaon, Dn Bangalore Express at Rangia and Dn BG Passenger at Fakiragram.
Talking to reporters, the President of the AKRSU Hiteswar Barman who is also the president of newly formed Jonogostiya Aikya Moncha said that they have objection on the creation of separate Bodoland state. The Bodos were given Bodoland Autonomous Council (BAC) in 1993 and later another accord–Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) was made in 2003 and there is no question of granting separate Bodoland state to the Bodos, he said adding that there are lots of ethnic communities in the region whose safety and security become a matter of concern. He said the rampant extortion, kidnapping and killings should be stopped in BTC area. Besides, the government should take initiative for complete rehabilitation of displaced people.
Meanwhile, the ABMSU has called 12 hours BTC area bandh on March 4 to protest the visit of former Union Home Secretary who is heading a one man expert committee on formation of Bodoland state at Kokrajhar. The bandh is also supported by Jonogostiya Aikya Moncha. Besides, the Oboro Suraksha Samity also imposed 24 hours BTC bandh from March 2 opposing the creation of Bodoland state. The bandh did not get response in Kokrajhar district.
It may be mentioned that the new organization Jonogostiya Aika Mocha was formed in the office of the All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) at Bhotgaon in Kokrajhar district on February 22 last with Hitesear Barman, President of All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) as president and Matiur Rahma, Secretary of ABMSU as its Secretary respectively. Engineered by ABMSU, the Moncha has representatives mainly from AKRSU, ABMSU, Oboro Suraksa Samity and BTC Bengali Youth Students’ Federation.
The main motives behind the formation of Jonojatiya Aika Moncha are to oppose the creation of Bodoland state and work against the rampant extortion, kidnapping and killings in BTC area. They also said that the Moncha will field candidate in the forthcoming parliamentary election and they will send such a person who will work for the interest of non Bodo communities in the region.
