While searchlights are on the upcoming elevated metro rail project and MMTS phase two of suburban ground rail system to connect different corners of the capital, the service in certain sections where the suburban rail system currently runs has been falling apart in the last few years.
This service is apart from the MMTS phase one suburban rail system connecting Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Kacheguda, Falaknuma and Lingampally.
The South Central Railway (SCR) has also been running the suburban rail system connecting different corners like Bolarum (14 km), Medchal (28 km) and Manoharabad (41 km)
...

from Secunderabad for more than two decades now.
Lifeline
In fact, the suburban train services on Bolarum-Secunderabad-Falaknuma section began from the metre gauge system post-Independence with steam and later diesel engines when they were curtailed during gauge conversion period. Once restarted in the mid-90s, they became a lifeline for office-goers and students till the services were progressively truncated, due to poor passenger patronage and also owing to “congestion” at the Secunderabad railway station.
From close to 10,000 passengers a day, it has come down to 5,800 in the last six years. The train services which were upto 45 a day once upon a time are just 13 services now, eight of which are connected to the Secunderabad station.
“The main problem is that there are no trains during the peak hours, either in the morning or evening, and to reach Secunderabad station, we have to alight at Sitaphalmandi and take another train. It is also difficult to get connecting trains if anyone wants to go towards Hi-Tec City or Lingampally,” says Sridhar N., once a regular passenger.
A look at the railway time-table clearly shows that there are no trains roughly after 8.10 a.m. till 9.50 a.m. between Secunderabad-Bolarum/Medchal or in the return direction with the next service only at 12.15 p.m. or 12.40 p.m.. Even during evenings, there are no trains after 4.15 p.m. or 4.45 p.m. till after 6.15 p.m. — clearly an inconvenience to daily passengers forcing them to take to congested roads even if it takes hours to reach their respective destinations.
Low priority
“Why will anyone take the suburban trains when these are often stopped in the outer for an hour though it’s cheaper and faster? We have made repeated representations to senior officers suggesting alternatives, but little has been done so far. Let the trains run on time, passengers will be back,” says Noor Ahmed Ali, general secretary, Suburban Train & Bus Travellers’ Association.
A former railway employee, Mr. Ali has been fighting for improvement in the suburban train transport for several years involving fellow passengers. “We have sought running of MMTS phase one services at least upto Malkajgiri and extending the suburban services upto Jangoan as there are many educational institutions there,” he avers.
Road connectivity
Railway officials too admit to falling passenger count. “Patronage has been coming from Lalaguda Gate to Manoharabad during the past few years, not only because of less frequency but also due to road connectivity that has increased enormously. Once MMTS phase two work is over, the Bolarum–Secunderabad and Moula Ali–Sanatnagar sections will be strengthened to improve services,” says SCR Chief Public Relations Officer M. Umashankar Kumar.
However, passengers are apprehensive that even after the MMTS phase two is ready, Secunderabad station may be bypassed considering the increasing rail traffic through this route even if the goods trains are expected to bypass through Moula Ali station. “The lines electrification is only upto Bolarum and doubling and electrification upto Medchal so suburban trains could still be made to wait in the outer,” observes S. Madhav, another passenger.

HYDERABAD: If Telangana government has its way , public transport in the form of Metro Rail may end up as the primary mode of commuting in Greater Hyderabad in years to come. This is because even as the first phase of Metro rail is slated to become operational in coming months, the TRS government has already begun working on Metro Phase II, through which it aims to add another 102km track to provide seamless transport from east to west and north to south of city.
Official sources said the state government is contemplating starting work on Metro Phase II from next year, by which time except for a 6km stretch between Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) and Falaknuma, the entire 72km three-corridor

Phase I is expected to be operational. For Phase II, Hyderabad Metro Rail reportedly asked Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prepare detailed project reports for identified corridors.
The 102km being proposed under Phase II would cover six corridors that have been tentatively identified based on recommendations of Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) carried out by LEA Associates for Hyderabad Metropolitan Region three years ago. The CTS report suggested that the Hyderabad metropolitan region requires 360km of Metro linkage by 2041, including 72 km which has already been taken up by the government.
As per the proposal, 102km Phase II corridors might be from Miyapur to Patancheru (13 km), Nagole-LB NagarChandrayangutta (13 km), LB Nagar-Hayatnagar (10 km), Miyapur to Gachibowli-Lakdikapul (21 km), BHEL-Gachibowli-Lakdikapul (21 km) and Tank Bund to ECIL via Tarnaka (15 km).
"After the 72-km Phase I of Metro rail works began, state government was flooded with requests for extension of Metro rail to their areas. For instance, people, including residential welfare associations, have sent representations for extension of Metro rail corridor-I up to Pantancheru. Similarly , there are requests for extension of corridor III to ECIL Crossroads and connecting Mehdipatnam by laying new tracks," a senior state government official said.
While most corridors could be an extension of existing Metro rail routes, Tank Bund to ECIL via Tarnaka corridor would be totally new. The corridor is being considered as it is one of the busiest stretch in the city .However, developing this corridor is also a difficult task as there could be massive land acquisition problems, officials said.
Municipal administration minister KT Rama Rao indicated a couple of days ago the state govenment was serious about developing Phase II as quickly as possible. A team of officials, including special advisor and former chief secretary Rajiv Sharma, municipal administration department secretary Navin Mittal, HMR managing director NVS Reddy and other officials visited Tokyo and held discussions with Japan Inter national Cooperation Agency (JICA) for aid. "For the 102km Phase II, the government will require about `30,000 crore . Though the Centre has asked all the states to take up Metro projects in PPP) mode, it is unlikely we can get an investor for the Phase II project.TRS government is also exploring other avenues," a senior official told STOI.
The government hopes once the financial module is ready , there would not be any problem. When contacted, municipal administration secretary Navin Mittal said: "Currently , planning of corridors and devising the module are in discussion stage."

Hyderabad: The Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) Phase II would get operational from December 2017 and the 75-km project would be commissioned in its entirety by 2018, said SCR new general manager Vinod Kumar Yadav.
Briefing the media at Charlapalli station here on Tuesday during a media tour between Secunderabad-Charlapalli-Ghatkesar, he said the completion of the MMTS Phase II is a top priority along with safety of rail passengers.

defence land at Bhudevi Nagar-Ammuguda is sorted out and the Local Military Authority is waiting for an official letter from the Central government. With land acquisition in major corridors complete and the remaining land issues at the end stage, the MMTS Phase II work is going to speed up.
In December, Telapur-Ramchandrapuram corridor would start operations followed by Secunderabad-Moula Ali-Ghatkesar, said the general manager.
“The connectivity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) is under discussion with the Ministry of Civil Aviation. We are hopeful that it would come through,” said the general manager. Out of the 10 acres land to be acquired, seven acres has already been acquired and the balance land is in advance stage of acquisition process, said Yadav.
The MMTS- Phase II services will cover Secunderabad-Moula Ali-Ghatkesar, Secunderabad-Bolarum-Medchal, Falaknuma-Umdanagar-Shamshabad Airport (Railways submitted sketch showing terminal station and consent from GMR is awaited), Moula Ali-Sanatnagar, Moula Ali-Malkajgiri-Sitafalmandi and Telapur-Ramchandrapuram stretches.
Five new stations
Five new stations are being constructed on Moula Ali-Sanatnagar route at Ferozguda, Suchitra Centre, Bhudevi Nagar, Neredmet and Moula Ali HB Colony. Three stations, namely Telapur, BHEL and Ramchandrapuram will be restored on Telapur-Ramchandrapuram section.
The MMTS-Phase II project was sanctioned in 2012-13 at an estimated cost of Rs 817 crore. The project is being done on cost sharing basis with the state government contributing 2/3rd of the cost. Till date, the Telangana government released just Rs 60 crore. Railway officials said that they are in talks with the state government for the release of Rs 160 crore in this financial year.
New terminal at Cherlapally
A new terminal at Cherlapally has been sanctioned and would be developed at a cost of Rs 80 crore. Six new platforms would be developed. The SCR general manager said the Railways has 50 acres of land and has put in a request for 150 acres from the state government. He met the Telangana State Chief secretary last week in this regard.

HYDERABAD: After a wait of four years, a part of Phase II of the Multi-Model Transport System (MMTS) is finally set to see light of the day by the end of this year. Vinod Kumar Yadav, general manager, South Central Railway, announced on Tuesday that the 5.75 km long Tellapur-R C Puram stretch will be the first in Phase II to get operational by December 2017. Subsequently, the entire project will be rolled out by December 2018.
On Tuesday, Yadav, who has recently taken charge, took mediapersons on a tour of the ongoing work being carried out on the Secunderabad-Moula Ali-Cherlapally-Ghatkesar section.

96.25 km, the Phase II project is spread across six routes. The total cost of the project is Rs 817 crore. This will be shared between the state government (it is supposed to pay two-thirds of the cost) and the SCR authorities.
Being implemented by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), this phase of the venture is still ridden with a few roadblocks. Among them is the issue of building a station at the Shamshabad airport -- a proposition being opposed tooth and nail by the airport authorities. There is also the issue of acquiring defence land along the Sanathnagar-Moula Ali stretch. In both cases, central ministries (civil aviation and defence) have now intervened to resolve the crisis.
"We have already taken up the issue with the concerned ministry and are hopeful of sorting out hurdles at the earliest," the newly sworn-in general manager said. He also confirmed that the MMTS connectivity to Yadadri - which too was on hold for a while --- has been sanctioned and the final location survey now is complete. "Tenders will be invited by April 20," he said.
On the issue of developing the Cherlapally station as a 'satellite terminal' - which will help decongest the traffic, of both long-distance and MMTS trains - he said that SCR has sought 150 acres of land from the state government for the same. The new terminal will be armed with six platforms and additional passenger/maintenance facilities. The project is expected to cost Rs 80 crore.
"The satellite terminal is meant to lessen the burden on Secunderabad railway station. Works in this regard have already been commenced. SCR has identified 50 acres of land and is in discussion with the state to acquire another 150 acres," he added.
Further, on the sidelines of the tour, Yadav pointed out that "safety" of passengers would be a prime area of focus for his team, during his tenure. He also stressed on improved mobility and punctuality. "SCR is according top priority to safety. Drives have been initiated to check railway tracks and rolling stock, including coaches and wagons," he said. He also mentioned that a new system for employee redressal has been put in place where a staff member can directly approach the general manager, if the grievance remains unresolved for a month.

Thats a welcome move. They can make a bigger bus terminal at Patancheru near by this station and can terminate some of the buses from Karnataka, Maharasatra side. It helps to control traffic also.

I guess, Secunderabad (SC) will be even more congested with SC - MLY - Cherlapally- Ghatkesar line. Important, passing through & RSA trains might not terminate at Charlapally. Only weekly trains might terminate. Tellapur - RC Puram is welcome.

If they can create terminal at RC puram, then some train can be extended to RC to decongest the SC.
