Suburban trains fail to live up to their promise and are perennially late
Mini buses and tempo travellers make multiple trips from Hosur to Whitefield every day. Their patrons: erstwhile train commuters, who, tired of local trains always running late, have shifted to road travel. On an average, trains are delayed by 30 minutes every day, and sometimes, commuters find themselves waiting even for an hour.
Thousands of people commute from Hosur and other areas on the outskirts to the city centre every day with trains being a convenient mode of transport due
to speed and affordability. However, train commuting is turning into an exasperating experience.
“Frequent delays are affecting our work. Most of us reach office late,” said Prakash Shigli, who travels from Baiyappanahalli to Mahadevapura every day. “Though the distance between the two places is not much, commute by road can take close to an hour during peak hours. But now, even trains are testing our patience,” he said, adding that close to 500 of his colleagues use local trains to reach office but most of them are late to work. “With so many industries and IT parks along the Baiyappanahalli, Whitefield and Hosur route, and so many employees depending on trains, I don’t understand why our problems are not being addressed.”
DEMU late too
Even additional trains have not been able to address the problem. The Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield train was launched in August last year. The DEMU is scheduled to leave Baiyappanahalli at 8.25 a.m. and start the return journey from Whitefield at 6.15 p.m. However, the train is late on most days. The delay is anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes, commuters said.
Another commuter Ramesh K., who travels every day from Cantonment to Carmelaram railway station, has to wait for two hours sometimes. “The Dharmapuri Passenger train is perpetually late. All the city-bound trains are very unpredictable,” he said.
Sundara Vadivu, who travels from Hosur to Cantonment every day, has started taking buses. “I used to take either the Nagercoil Express or the Hosur-Yeshwantpur passenger train. Both reach Hosur 30 minutes after the scheduled time. In the evening, I was dependent on the Dharmapuri-bound train. That one is also always late. If it does come on time, it is stopped at Baiyappanahalli for over 30 minutes to allow crossing of other express trains,” she said.
Self-help through social media
With IRCTC updates on train timings unreliable, commuters have only each other to depend on. Many commuters are part of multiple WhatsApp and Telegram groups for updates on location of the trains.
Prakash Shigli is part of a Telegram group, which has over 500 members, mostly colleagues. “We have people taking the trains from different stations. If someone is at Majestic, he or she instantly sends an update about the status of the train on the group. We also give the platform number so that people can easily locate the train,” he said.
Commuters say that the live updates help them plan their departure from home. “It helps us avoid unnecessary wait at the station,” he added.
The timely information about delays also helps commuters make the choice of either travelling by train or by road.
Ramesh K., who is part of a WhatsApp group 'Train Friends', says, “We cannot depend on updates from IRCTC. So we created this group to share live updates on the location of trains.”
Poor infrastructure and delayed projects
The crux of the problem is the inadequate railway infrastructure, which includes the non-upgradation of signalling systems and no doubling of Baiyappanahalli-Hosur line. This has crippled South Western Railway, preventing it from accommodating more trains.
While doubling of the line has not even been approved, SWR has been sitting on two signal upgradation projects for nearly five years. Indian Railways had sanctioned a ₹8 crore project to automate signalling on railway lines in the city in 2013-14 with a timeline of one year.
However, RTI replies by SWR reveal that the contract for the project was awarded as late as March 2017 and the new deadline has been set for September 2018.
Urban commute expert Sanjeev V. Dyamannanavar said that automatic signalling would increase the carrying capacity of the rail network in the city by at least 50%.
On the Cantonment-Whitefield line, SWR has a project to introduce new signals under the Intermediate Block Signalling Project, which will increase the frequency of trains. “The project will introduce new signals at K.R. Puram and other stations in between, which will increase the frequency of trains being flagged off from Baiyappanahalli,” said Mr. Dyamannanavar.
SWR officials said that the project — tenders are yet to be issued — is part of an MoU between Indian Railways and the State government. The State government is to bear 80% of the cost.
Doubling lines
In August last year, SWR has proposed to the railway ministry doubling and electrification of the Baiyappanahalli-Hosur (48 km) and Baiyappanahalli-Hebbal-Banaswadi-Chennasandra (21.7 km) lines. This will ensure that local trains are not stopped for express trains to pass.
According to SWR official, the proposals are likely to be sanctioned in the upcoming budget.

The Baiyappanahalli-Hosur railway line, which passes through major software and technology firms, is also the most neglected and under-developed line in the suburban rail map of Bengaluru. The Railways has come up with a piecemeal solution: the electrification of the 45-km line. The proposal for doubling the line, however, still remains a dream.
Last week, the Rail Vikas Nigam, a government of India enterprise, floated tenders for the electrification of the Baiyappanahalli-Omalur (via Hosur) single-line section, including civil engineering, signalling and telecommunication works. The project, estimated to cost Rs 157.23 crore, is expected to be completed in two years.
electrification, the doubling of the Hosur line from Lottegollahalli (via Baiyappanahalli) was a longpending demand. This is because almost all key roads are witnessing dense traffic while the completion of Metro project to Electronic City and Bommasandra from RV Road is at least four years away.
In a mark of protest against the delay in suburban services, angry passengers who travel between Yeshwantpur and Hosur had staged flash protests and blocked trains twice in the past. They pointed out that the trains were running late at least by 45 minutes daily, affecting their work.
In all, the South Western Railway runs 10 trains and serves 5,000 people daily, though the stretch has the potential to attract more crowd, given its proximity to industrial areas and IT firms in Bellandur, Heelalige, Carmelaram and Anekal.
Sanjeev Dyamannavar, who is campaigning for the suburban rail system, blamed both the State and Central governments for not taking least interest in addressing commuter issues. "Despite several requests for doubling the Yeshwantpur-Hosur line, we are still made to wait. It's only the stretch that caters to multiple segments from techies to employees who work in industries," he said.
"The Railways, if it does not have money to fund the project, should at least introduce innovative ways to fast-track important projects. The policies are so rigid that there are not many instances where private companies come forward to share corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds to improve rail infrastructure," Dyamannavar noted.
Ashok Gupta, chief administrative officer (construction) SWR, too hopes the Railways would include doubling of the Yeshwantpur-Hosur line in the upcoming budget. "We have sent the proposal to the Railway Board. The 48-km doubling project would roughly cost Rs 475 crore," he said.
NS Rama, CEO of Electronics City Industries Association, said she would write a letter to the elected representatives and railway officials to fast-rack the doubling and electrification of the line. "A lot of employees here depend on trains and some companies are offering shuttle services from and to the Heelalige railway station which is close to Electronics City. With the Metro work, traffic congestion is going to increase. We will push for additional infrastructure facility," she said.

A bell emoticon for Bellandur, Burger bun for 'Bun'aswadi, a car emoji for Carmelram, red heel for Heelalige and house for Hosur railway station, are the symbols techies have been using for daily commute on suburban trains.
“Ever since software professionals became aware of the benefit of suburban trains on Yeshwanthpur-Hosur line connecting the IT corridor, they created the Trainspotters group a few years ago on Telegram Messenger application," said Suhas Narayan Murthy, one of the users.
"To make it easier to identify, there are emoticon references for trains,
for example, a pair of eyes for Kannur Express (kannu in Kannada means eye). Bots get information from the railways website on current status of a train or fellow commuter's update about the status - a down arrow marks the station reached and a cross mark indicates that the train is at a level-crossing," Suhas explained.
Techies who have embraced suburban trains to commute to work, can look forward to a full-fledged smart phone app. Rakesh Tergundi, who works at Mobijini, along with a group of colleagues, put their heads together to create Railjini, a Bengaluru suburban rail application.
"The coding and testing is finished and we will have a review meeting next week. This is how it works - in case you are in Sadashivnagar and need to get to Sarjapur, Railjini will tell you where the nearest station is, the trains available and when they arrive," explained Rakesh.
He said, "We are trying to integrate it with the Railways API server, to get real time information on train location. However, this is taking time due to government procedures. Until this happens, apart from GPS usage, we selected a few volunteers who have agreed to share their locations while commuting, so the user can use the data," Rakesh said, adding that the anonymity of volunteers would be respected.
Expected to launch on public domain by the end of this year, the app will cater to all lines, including Whitefield-Bangarpet side, Bellandur-Hosur, Tumakuru, Yeshwanthpur, Mysuru and the rest of the city's South Western Railway division.
The team putting in their efforts purely out of interest is also keen on securing the last-mile commute from the station. Currently in the pipeline, they have reached out to app based cab companies Ola and Uber, so rail passengers can book and share a cab to reach their offices.

Technology is the viral fever every handset user needs to imherit, these Namma techies are coining innovative methods to get exact and easily understandable way of updates
Hats off
This petition will be handed over to the Railways officially by the Hosur Payanigal Meambattu Sangham, on October 26, 2017, at 7.30 am, in Hosur Railway Station.
Honorable Shri Piyush Goyal,
The Honorable Minister of Indian Railways,
of India.
The Daily Rail Commuters between Hosur and Bengaluru
Respected Sir,
Sub: Requesting to approve the doubling of track between Hosur and Bengaluru; and stoppage of Express trains in a few stations.
We are the proud passengers who commute up and down from Hosur to Bengaluru on daily basis to earn our livelihood. Most of us are season ticket holders. The love for train, our livelihood and pride is at stake now. We are used to punishment of the delay in passenger train. These days it has reached its extreme limit.
The privilege given to express train is all right as per the norms but the impact created by it on passenger trains has been difficult to manage. These delays can be avoided by providing a double track in this route, which is an on-going demand for years together. Since this route has a single-track provision, most of the trains running on-time were made to wait for crossing over the intermediate stations. This results in delay of all the trains between Hosur and Bengaluru. This in turn affects the total number of hours that we burn in office.
We are requesting the Honorable Minister of Railways to provide approval and sanction of double track between Hosur and Bengaluru on high priority. I presume, the government of India is aware that Hosur stands fourth in Global Economic forum for fastest developing cities. In addition to that, the announcement from Tamilnadu government says that Hosur will soon be a Corporation, which will in turn give Hosur the City Status. Above all, Hosur is the mechanical hub of Deccan plateau.
Having said these, the steady rise of Hosur population should be appreciated and it will be helpful if Indian Railways can do their part on supporting a city that intends to grow. Apparently, the number of commuters for train from Hosur to Bengaluru will increase. In addition, Indian Railways is making good amount of profit because of the goods train that serve Hosur. Plight of Hosur Railway station is awful. Platform no 4 that brings more money is at ground level. Hosur Railway station has only one foot over bridge.
We have more concerns but our main Agenda are as follows:
Double-track provision between Hosur and Bengaluru.
Providing new basic harmless stops for a few Express Trains and
Electrification of railway lines
On considering the same, we are requesting the railways to provide stoppage for a few express trains like Nagercoil to Bengaluru (17236) and Bengaluru to Nagercoil (17235), Mysore to Mailaduturai (16232) and Mailaduturai to Mysore (16231), Mysore to Tuticorin (16236) and Tuticorin to Mysore (16237), Bengaluru to Ernakulum (12677) and Ernakulum to Bengaluru (12678), to stop at the Baiyappanahalli station and Carmelram. These trains are anyway unofficially stopping at these stations for crossing over, and thus it can be made as an official stop to increase the revenue. This can be implemented immediately so that the boarding passengers in the nearby stations can make use of train, which will in turn reduce the flooded road traffic in Bengaluru.
Kindly pay heed to the abovesaid demands and make our dreams real.
With lot of hopes for a safe and better Commutation.
Bottom line of our request:
Provision of Double track between Hosur and Bengaluru
Stoppage of of Express Trains at Baiyappanahalli and Carmelram stations
Electrification of railway lines between Hosur and Bengaluru
Copy to:
The Honorable Railway Minister of India.
The Chairman, Rail Bhavan, New Delhi, India.
The Honorable Chief Minister of Karnataka.
The Honorable Chief Minister of Tamilnadu.
The Honorable MLA of Hosur.
The Honorable MP of Hosur (Krishnagiri Lok Sabha constituency).
The Divisional Railway Manager of Bengaluru Division.
The Additional Divisional Railway Manager of Bengaluru Division.
The Chief Operations Manager of South Western Railways, Huballi HQ.
The Station Master of Hosur Railway Station.
