Mangaluru railway region’s status of being under three railway zones appears to have again come in the way of speeding up the Bengaluru-Karwar Night Express.
While Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction come under Southern Railway, the network beyond Thokur towards Mumbai comes under Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., (KRCL) and the line beyond Padil towards Hassan falls under South-Western Railway.
Logically, the arrival of the train at Mangaluru Central and Karwar should have been advanced at least by two hours upon diversion.
The

train would have reached Mangaluru Central at around 6 a.m. via the shortest route if it departs Bengaluru at 8.30 p.m., the current timing. If everything was in order, the Karwar service could have left Mangaluru at around 6.30 a.m. reaching Karwar before noon.
However, SR has reportedly informed SWR that path and platforms are not available at Mangaluru Central at the advanced timings.
Similarly, KRCL reportedly said that a path was not available for advancing the services, according to sources.
SWR has thus tentatively decided to speed up the train within its jurisdiction, Bengaluru till Padil, by postponing the departure to 10.20 p.m.
The train will thus arrive at and depart from Mangaluru Central at the existing timing, 8.15 a.m. and 9 a.m., reaching Karwar at the present timing of 2.35 p.m.
Bengaluru arrival
However, in the return journey, the train could reach Bengaluru via the diverted route at 6.10 a.m., from the present 8.20 a.m., a reduction of two hours 10 minutes.
SWR has decided to shift the terminal for Bengaluru-Karwar/Kannur Express to Yeshwantpur on all days following operational constraints at Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna railway station.
Adequate pit lines (for cleaning the rake) and stabling lines (for stationing the rake) are not available if the train is operated via Shravanabelagola, sources said.
SWR is in the process of finalising the days of operation on the diverted route as well as the existing route, via Mysuru.
SR’s in-charge General Manager Sudhanshu Mani and KRCL’s Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Gupta said the matter needs to be discussed further by all the three zones.
Diversion via shortest route from Feb. 10
The proposed diversion of the Bengaluru-Karwar/Kannur Night Express four days a week via the shortest route of Shravanabelagola will be from February 10, 2018.
While the Railway Board has already approved South Western Railway’s proposal to this effect, the Railways may not be able to implement it immediately as passengers have made advance reservations for the existing services up to 120 days.

I am not blaming anyone for anything. Just gave some facts. The member himself acknowledged it. And yes his experience may vary too, I acknowledge.
Bengaluru-Mumbai route has nothing to do with SR.

The high court directed the railway board on Friday to consider and pass orders in four months on the representation seeking for an exclusive Bengaluru-Karwar night train via the recently commissioned Kunigal line.
A division bench gave four weeks to petitioner Sanjay Revankar, a resident of Karwar's Kadwad village, to submit his representation to the board.
Raveendra G Kolle, counsel for the petitioner, told the court that if Karwar Express is run independently via Kunigal line through Kankanadi junction without entering Mangaluru city , passengers would save over four hours.

Board told to consider the representation and pass orders in four months
The High Court of Karnataka on Friday directed the Railway Board to consider a representation and pass orders in four months on a plea seeking an exclusive Bengaluru–Karwar night train through the recently commissioned Kunigal line.
A Division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice H.G. Ramesh and Justice P.S. Dinesh Kumar also asked the petitioner, Sanjay Revankar, a resident of Kadwad village in Karwar taluk, to submit his representation to the board. Earlier, the petitioner’s counsel told the Bench that precious travel

time of more than four hours could be saved if the train is operated via Kunigal line and through Kankanady junction without entering Mangaluru city. It was also pointed out to the court that the train to Karwar can also be started from Mysuru city to run via Bengaluru, Kunigal, Shravanabelagola, and Kankanady Junction to reach Karwar.

Kunjal Venkatesh Kini, who was recently appointed member of the National Railway Users’ Consultative Council (NRUCC) of the Railway Board, has urged the Railways to reroute Bengaluru-Karwar night express train via the newly commissioned Bengaluru-Hassan line.
In a letter to the South Western Railway’s General Manager, Mr. Kini, a businessman from Byndoor, said that Karwar appears to be the only place in the State which lacks speedy train connectivity.
The present service, Train No. 16523/ 524 takes a whopping 18 hours, covering a distance of about 760 km on a circuitous route via
...
Mysuru, instead of the shortest distance of 666 km and journey hours of less than 13 hours, he said.
If the train is operated on the shortest route, it would not only benefit the public to travel between the coast and the State capital faster, but also improve occupancy of the train thereby improving the revenue of the Railways, he said.
Lack of adequate train connectivity has facilitated mushrooming of bus operations in the region, he alleged.Mr. Kini noted that though the Zonal RUCC of SWR had resolved to divert the train after the new line was commissioned, it was not implemented ostensibly on the ground as one of the 37 members of the Mysuru Division’s RUCC opposed the proposal (two others had welcomed it, while 34 others did not respond to the proposal).
The grouse was that people in Mysuru region would lose connectivity to the coast.
‘Start from Mysuru’
He suggested that the train could be started from Mysuru instead of Bengaluru as at present and run via Bengaluru, Shravanabelagola, and Hassan.
This revision would eliminate reversal of train engines at Mysuru and Hassan thereby saving 90 minutes. The Railways may introduce a slip coach attached to Mysuru-Dharwad Express by suitably modifying the timing to cater to passengers between Mysuru and Hassan.
The slip coach then could be attached to Bengaluru-Karwar/Kannur Express at Hassan.
Besides rerouting the train, the Railways should also detach Bengaluru-Karwar Express from Bengaluru-Kannur Express (16517) at Mangaluru Junction itself to save another 45 minutes of entry and exit to and from Mangaluru Central Station.
These modifications would ensure that the Bengaluru-Karwar journey could be completed within 13 hours, Mr. Kini said.
